I need help!!!!

Hi all,

I am new to this board. I have seen many a beautiful gardens here. I live in central Oklahoma and am fairly new to gardening. If you can help it would be great.

1. Now that is the heat of summer 95+ what kind of flowers can I plant.

2. My wife want's a trellis, she wants a climbing rose, is there such a thing? or are their better flowering plants that climb?

3. Back to #1 lots of wind.

4. How about a ornamental grass or plant that stays green or has color most of the year.

A climbing rose does exist - and most likely there are several to choose from grown on root stock for your climate. However, climbing roses need to be tied and trained to whatever their support is (i.e. the trellis). They will not "twine" themselves up the support. You will need to use something to tied them up with that is extremely flexible given your windy conditions - or the plant will "rock" and damage the root structure.

Most rose "experts" will not recommend that you plant a climbing rose in an area with very windy conditions. We have had luck keeping our climbing rose (Queen Elisabeth) secure without root damage by using "knee high nylons" as ties. They are not real pretty to look at though. (We will eventually train the rose to grown along the top of a very tall fence with arbor).

It is not always windy where we live - but we do get some pretty bad storms with high winds.

The rose has been planted for 3 years now and is about 12 feet tall.

If you decide against the roses because of the wind situation, you may want to investigate clematis. I've never grown it but I've seen beautiful pictures of it here on this site (posted by either Amid or Gina - the duo who confuze me with their charm, wit and/or humor).

It is my understanding that Clematis plants love the sun but need to have their roots in the shade. Whether they twine around the trellis on its own or needs help to do same, I am uncertain. Mamu may have posted a plant profile on the clematis so you can do a search function to find it and any other reference to the plant that may have been mentioned.

I'm sure you will get more responses to your other questions following the weekend.

(Oh, I figured it out -- Amid had the clematis because she is in New England and Gina is the one who has grown some beauties when it comes to ornamental grasses so she may be able to help you out with that).
