I have a crisis, and I need advise ASAP. I was thinking about joining DVC. I had just sent in my signed contract, I was about to send in the deposit check, and my husband called and said he just got called about a job in Orlando. It is not a guarantee he is going to get the job, but gee how ironic is this. We are in NY that is why we were thinking about DVC just to get away once in a while. If he gets the job what good would it do to have
DVC. Is it still a good idea to get? Need advise please. Thanks.

Don't know how many points you are considering. There are many DVC members in Florida. We have spent many winters in Ft. Myers and really enjoyed driving to DW for 3 to 5 day trips. I have met many folks in and around Orlando that really enjoy going to Disney.

The Florida resident seasonal pass is a great bargain.

I'm one of those Floridians who own DVC (and there are many of us), but honestly I wouldn't buy DVC if I was going to be living in the Orlando area.

As noted above, the Florida resident seasonal pass is a great value. In addition, there is an Epcot-after 4 PM pass for dining, and the Florida resident Annual Pass (only $25 more than the DVC discount price). There are also great Florida resident hotel rates if you do decide you want to stay onsite sometime.

I certainly would not be able to justify DVC for an occasional onsite stay, or only for stays at HHI or VB, and if you are interested primarily in trading out through II, most people who really know timeshares will tell you there are better alternatives than DVC.

I think if I lived in Orlando, I would probably sell my add-ons, but keep my original master contract. That way, when your Friends and family "visit you" you can also put them up for a few days at Disney without having to "entertain them" all the time in your home, and chauffeur them back and forth to the local attractions.

I'd say to put that contract on hold. You should never buy anything with your emotions running so high you think it's a crisis. Just give it a couple of weeks to see what happens with the potential job in Orlando.

I can only assume you are buying through Disney: Call your guide and explain the situation. I'm pretty sure they will understand and work with you to give you time to sort things out. If you do move and live in the Orlando area, I really don't see why you would want to own DVC.

I'd wait. We moved to Orlando after buying and while we do find uses for the points, I'm not sure I'd rush out to buy them once i lived here. DVC will still be here when you know more. My daddy always said, "when in doubt, don't"

I am also a Floridian DVC owner but we live 5-6 hours from Orlando. If we lived in Orlando I doubt that we would own a piece of DVC since I don't know how many nights that we'd realistically stay on property. Maybe once in awhile for a treat but not enough to justify paying yearly dues and the initial start-up cost. I'd check to see if you can put the contract on hold until you find out about the possible Orlando job.

I simlpy cannot see the point in buying into DVC when you're going to live there! And being a Florida resident, You'll get good discounts. No, I don't think I'd buy. Why pay for points (thye're not cheap!) just to accommodate visiting friends and family?

No, I'd cancel that contract and buy some AP's. I would, however, wait on everything until the move was a definite!

I have a crisis,
A job opportunity in Orlando? That's no crisis! Now if you had to move to Alaska, that would be a crisis!! :scared:

Okay, don't want the Alaskans flaming me...just trying to think of some place far away from WDW! ;)

Seriously, I agree with others. Hold off on your DVC purchase. Get yourself situated in Orlando and then see if you can see any reason to buy. You mention that your primary reason was as a "getaway", and it would seem that it is no longer qualified as that.

I hope everything goes smoothly for your family whether you purchase DVC or move to Orlando. Good luck! :)

We bought when we lived in PA. Now we live in Orlando - about 15 minutes NE of airport. When we moved we decided to hold on to our DVC and MVCI contracts for at least six months before making any decisions about changes. We will be making some changes, probably reconfiguring some of the MVCI contracts.

We go to Disney regularly for day trips -- we especially like to attend the Epcot concert series in the spring and fall. Great night out with dinner at a nice Epcot restaurant. We have APs and my Mom has an annual FL seasonal pass. Living so close we also have APs for Sea World and that other theme park (her idea, not mine :)) for day trips there.

Yet we find we still enjoy the longer full Disney experience. We no longer stay seven nights as we did when we lived up north. Now the trips are five nights. Just cannot justify the weekend point penalty when living so close. We added on another 150 points at AKV this month (AKL is a favorite resort for us). The magic of a longer on property stay is still very special for us.

I agree with others who have cautioned to hold off before purchasing. You need to find what works best for you. Good luck.

P.S. I find that I like snow even more now that it is up north and I am down here :goodvibes

We have 210 points at BWV in our original contract, and then added on 250 points at BCV. When we moved to the Orlando area, the BCV points were sold, but we still ahve the BWV points. We've used them to trade out to non-DVC resorts, rented them to friends, spent nights at WDW for various reasons, and this year are staying at VBR for five nights in a Beach Cottage which would be absolutely not happening if we didn't have the DVC.

As far as friends and family visiting, we've made it clear that while they are welcome in our home, they need to rent a car and not expect us to chauffer them. Maybe we're selfish, but we're not putting people up on our points at WDW. We've only had one person get snitty about it, but she's really high maintenance, and in all honesty I'm not sure I am up to having her visit anyhow...
