We had the Sleep Number and I didn't like it. We have had the TempurPedic for over a year and we LOVE it! Best $ ever spent, we paid $2200.00 for a queen size set at a local furniture store that carrys them and we got the pillows free during their mattress sale.

We just got a Serta Pedic (specific one is a Concord Eurotop) King size set and LOVE IT!!!! It has memory foam as the top layer. My mom & grandfather got the twin size set. They love it as well. Infact our DS liked laying on it he now wants one. We got them at Menards. King size set was: $697 and the Twin set was: $437.

My parents have a pillowtop and they like it.

I know you said you will not spend the money for a Temp., however you might want to consider it for a future purchase you save for. We got one a few months ago and it's the best investment I ever made. I have never slept so good in my life.

We bought one of the base models of Tempurpedic last year. I'm thinking it was around $1800. DH called and spoke with a rep...while the rep got a bit irritated, he finally told DH that unless you were quite heavy or had trouble being overheated at night, there really was no reason to get one of the more expensive models. So we bought the "cheaper" one and are absolutely thrilled! I have chronic bursitis in my right hip and can sleep on it pain-free.

I am so glad to see these comments. Our adjustable tempurpedic is coming Tuesday!!! I have wanted one of these for so long but could not afford it. DMIL is getting us one because DH has sustained a really bad injury and has been basically bed ridden for the last month. I so can't wait to get a new bed. We have to do without for one night (DH in the recliner and me on the chaise) because I need to do some painting when I get our bed out on Monday. I hate being at the mercy of others for help (you know hurt DH and he can't help do anything!) That's OK, I should sleep like a baby Tuesday.

If you are interested in a memory foam mattress- look into what Ikea offers.
They are healthier, less chemical ingredients- and much cheaper.
We love ours.

We just bought a sleep number bed with a pillow top mattress, and I CANNOT wait for it to get here. I am 36 months pregnant (it feels like it anyways) and in desperate need of a good nights sleep. We bought a super cheap (as in $400.00) mattress that within 3 years has caved in. Whatever you do, buy the best you can afford.
Before this nightmare of a mattress, we had a Spring Air pillowtop that had a silk padded side for the warmer months and a wool padded side for the colder months. We LOVED it!!!! We bought a bigger bed and ended up putting that mattress in the guest bedroom. After 10 years, the mattress has held up wonderfully. We coupled it with some awesome sheets, and people always tell us how comfortable it is. Good luck with your search.

I have to chime in here and say that a Tempur mattress is the way to go. Even if you can only afford one of the base models, you'll still be getting a great mattress. We have the Rhapsody and it really is heavenly!

We bought ours at Sleepy's and this is how I got a great deal.

I went to costco.com...saw what Sealy/Serta/Name Brand mattresses they carried. Chose a couple different ones that had a price I liked. Then I went to Sleepy's and asked for those beds by name. Now, the names at the ones at Sleepy's aren't the same, except for the brand name. But they have a list in the store that says that Mattress A at Costco is the same as Mattress B at Sleepy's. I picked from the couple I had prices from at Costco. We preferred the firm to the plush. Wanted the one with more coils. I then compared the specs to the Sleepy's one from the paper from Costco...exactly the same. And Sleepy's matched Costco's price right down to the free shipping and 10 year non-prorated warranty. :goodvibes

If you're having back trouble, you may want to be careful about something soft like a pillowtop. My dh has back issues and definitely prefers a hard mattress. His doctor had him to have a bed board that went between the mattress and box spring made when he first injured his back and we had a lesser-quality mattress. We sleep on a top-of-line Sera that we inherited when my in-laws moved to a retirement community. It is about 10 years old, but, since it was in their main guest room, is probably about two years old in time used. It's hard as a rock, and we love it.

I know the mattress companies say we need to replace them frequently, but we spent about $1,000 on a queen size 20+ years ago, and it's still in excellent condition and living in our guest room.

I've got to agree on the temperpedic. We have kingsize and I actually miss our bed when we go away now. We just got a full size for dd because we got sick of her asking to sleep in our bed.

I bought a Vera Wang mattress and 'bargained' my way down to $1000.

My fiance went to Macy's furniture outlet store and bought his mattress of equal value ($2500 retail) for $400.

His mattress is much nicer than mine b/c I think I bought mine slightly too soft. I should have gone for a little more solid - maybe a medium. His and mine are both pillow-tops.

If there's a Carson Pirie Scott's outlet or Macy's outlet store, check those out. The mattresses have minimal dust on them which is why they are at the outlet store. I will NEVER buy in any other store ever again. The deals were unreal!!!

If there's an original mattress factory near you, go there. Most reasonable prices I've seen anywhere, and the quality is amazing. They are one of the few companies that still makes mattresses you can flip-make sure you check that, because if you can't flip it, that's half the life, gone. I love ours from there.

We bought our mattress at Macy's over 3 years ago and it is the worst mattress we've had. Wish I had my sagging 20 yr. old one back. We spent almost $1000 for the queen set. The name escapes me right now, but it was a name brand. I will never ever ever buy a pillow top again. For the first year we rotated it every 3 weeks as recommended. Don't see how that did any good as DH ended up sleeping in my spot and me in his??? Now we have two very defined valleys and one big hump between us. ARRGH. Next time I'm headed to Costco.

IMHO don't ever buy a pillow or euro top. i have made my mattresses last 20 years by flipping and rotating the mattress regularly. you can't flip either of the above two types.

I am firmly in the sleep number camp. Best mattress we have ever bought. Took me awhile (about 3 weeks) to find the right number, but now, I will not ever buy anything else. We actually own two because we upgraded when we finally were in a house that had a dedicated guest room. But you sleep on it....so it has to be right for you. Good luck finding one!
