I am completely beating myself up because I am pretty sure I accidentally threw away my daughter's iPod touch. I had a plastic tablecloth on the dinner table and lots of stuff had been stacked on top of it. I wanted to clean off the table and I stacked the stuff in the corner of the table, yanked the tablecloth off and threw it in the trash. Now no one can find the ipod and the last place they remember seeing it was on the table. I tried the iCloud find my phone thing and it had been dead for a while before I even threw the tablecloth away, so I know that won't help.

Has anyone thought they threw something away and then found it?

i have accidentally thrown away items several times and then found them after pulling out all of the trash bags and searching piece by piece. Is your trash still at your house somewhere?

How long ago did you last see it? Can you go through the trash urgh, I know.

I've never thrown anything away and found it again but I did put my sons MP3 player in the washing machine once, and it worked perfectly well afterwards lol

I took the trash to the dumpster on Tuesday the same day I tossed it. My daughter just informed me it was missing and we have looked everywhere else. I might have to go dumpster diving and hope for the best.

If you can find the right bag of trash in the dumpster, maybe it won't be so bad. That's a tough one. Does she remember the last time she used it?

My keys got thrown in the dumpster, when I was at a scrapbooking event. I didn't realize until it was time to leave, and I couldn't find them. I got a ride home that night, and came back the next day. Luckily I guessed which bag of trash it was likely to be in (the bag with all the used prize tickets), and found them without too much trouble - although the bags that had food in them - blech!

Good luck!

How much would it cost to replace it?

Thanks guys. I went through the dumpster, but it looks like the dumpster was emptied between when I tossed that particular trash bag and today.

The last time she used it was Thursday Aug 25 she says she came in and sat it down on the table. She doesn't remember using it after that. I threw away the plastic cover on Tuesday 30th. I'm now convinced it was in that cover because she rolled that corner of the cover up to put a cake on the table. That would explain why I didn't see it when I pulled the cover off the table.

It looks like I am going to have to replace it. I think it was $200. She saved up all her birthday money and did extra chores for 6 months to be able to purchase it herself. (Extra guilt for me)

That sucks, but unless I was 100% sure it was in the dumpster, I think I'd replace it.

One year in the 4th of July we were at a fireworks show. When the show was over we picked up the blanket and chairs and headed to the car which was a long walk. When we were almost to the car, DD (then 12) realized that her iPod was on the blanket and was now probably sitting on the HUGE grass field. We go back and the lights were out so it was pretty dark. The cleanup crew helped us look using the headlight from the golf cart, but we didn't find it. I did find someone else's phone though! The sprinklers were set to come on at 3:00am so we figured it was a goner. Fast forward a few days later and DH gets a call from someone who found the iPod that night. They saw "Dad" in her phone numbers so called DH. We had paid $300 just 3 months earlier for it for her birthday.

I've thrown away my keys in our outside trash bin a few times. I've had to pay $300 for a new car key and $150 again a few years later. At least the price went down!

Once at Disney World we were eating at the Mainstreet Bakery. DD had taken out her retainer and wrapped it in a napkin. When we cleaned off the table after eating, the napkin got thrown in the trash with everything else because DD forgot about it and we didn't know she had taken her retainer out. 15 minutes later she realized what happened, so we ran back to the bakery, dug through the trash, and found her retainer still wrapped in a napkin. It would have cost $250 to replace it.

That's an extensive iPod! I would probably go out to the dumpster to see if my bag was anywhere near the top. I wouldn't feel comfortable diving into a dumpster though.

I checked the dumpster but there was only about 10 bags in there. So I know it has been emptied. Yeah, it was the iPod touch so that she could text me if she needed to. It might be time to get her a phone.

I'm sorry you have so many examples of this, but its nice to know I'm not the only one.

Years ago, I took DD's iPod Touch away one night when she was playing with it too late. I placed it on my bedside table and went to bed. The next morning, it was no where to be found. I tore up the table, under the bed, etc. looking for it. It showed up A YEAR LATER under the corner of my bed. :scared: I still don't know what happened.

Yeah, it's pretty sad. Usually I've got my hands full with things including my keys and while I'm throwing something away, my keys get thrown away, too. On the two occasions where I never found them, it happened to also be trash day, so by the time I realized what happened to them (after searching high and low), the trash had been picked up. The other times I had lost them I'd find them in the outside trash because it wasn't trash day.

I worry that I'll have Alzheimer's when I'm old. Losing my keys has been a life-long curse.

I would feel awful too! I have gotten into the habit of checking bags and tablecloths and anything else before I throw it out because my daughter is good for leaving things behind. When she got clear retainers is when I got real serious about checking even though technically they are her responsibility. I'm sorry that you didn't have any luck at the dumpster, maybe it will turn up under a couch cushion. My daughter is good for losing stuff between her bed and the wall.
