I met DVC member who says he lives at WDW

My wife and I plan on retiring in the next few years. We have been very blessed. We live in the cold north, and plan on spending Jan-April on property for our remaining years (or 2042, which ever comes first!). I asked our guide about the points ownership limits, and he just sort of scoffed and say something to the effect that the limit was only there to prevent some other company from buying a huge stake in DVC and renting their interests. DVC wanted DVC to have a broad ownership base. He said to not worry about it. We currently have a little over 1/3 of what we need for points to stay in a 1 bedroom - moving from OKW to BWV after the first 2 months of the 4 we plan on staying. I should add, we plan on also revisiting for the F&W fest, and a brief Christmas visit as well each year. As another poster mentioned, it is sort of an assisted living arrangement.

We also have a driver whose picked us up at MCO and taken us to our resorts for years, this year tell us that he had another guest he was transporting who just returned from DCL - on the cruise they'd met an older woman who claimed to be "living" on the crusie ship year round, and the DCL had cut her a deal at $100 per day ( I assume for an inside stateroom), in her mind this was her assisted living arrangement.

Sounds like Disney needs to consider an assisted living facility, they are popping up everywhere, why not at WDW.

My husband and I are in our 30's and we think about when we retire we have enough points to stay at old key west in January for three weeks. we can be snow birds from New Jersey then. sounds great for the man.

Some may flame me for even suggesting this, but: As you acquire points towards this end, and the point in time when you're actually ready to do it - you could rent the points out, and with the proceeds pay your MF's and use the balance to acquire more points.

Sounds nice. Just last night I figured the wife and I could stay for 21 days in January at OKW in a one bedroom once the kids are gone.

I think it's 2000 per resort and 5000 total. Could be wrong, but I remeber that there is a limit for each resort and then a different total limit.

You are right, it is 5000 total. We have 2000 points and our dues are $643.65 monthly, so if he has 4000, he's spending a lot to stay at Disney without really having an address! Good for him ........

Wow! So 5000 points would be a little over $1500 per month just in dues. ($18000 annually)

$666,000 by the year 2042 if there is absolutely no increase in dues for the duration.

$300,000 minimum upfront investment if you got the points for $60 and paid cash.

Then I'll be 74 years old in 2042 with no place to go and nothing (financially) to show for my million dollars. I don't think the DVC Retirement plan is right for me.

Although, Man! Wouldn't that be cool to live there?!?!?!?

You got it right!!!! By 2042 I'll be in my 90's, I figure I'll have the kids take me around in my wheelchair, just like I did with them in their strollers!!!

It occurs to me that he is staying at WDW with no address, so he can't prove residency for all the residence discounts!

This point limit thing must be new. I know when we purchased our points in 1999 there were no point limits ( we inquired at that time ). Our rep. told us of a few folks who were staying on property the full 11 allowable months. I also seem to remember on the resale board seeing some HUGE point numbers up for sale ( in the order of 140,000 points ). I assumed these were purchased by a corp. for some kind of exec/employee perk.

dianeschlicht-I'm not sure what you have to have to prove residency, but he could have an address. (I checked into this last week) There are several UPS Stores handy in the area, the one in the mall next to the Winn-Dixie actually offers "snowbird specials" on PO boxes, you pay for 3 or 6 months, and you'll get 3 or 6 months rental for free. So you can have an address at least.

Actually, to prove residency for Disney purposes, I think he needs a Florida drivers license and or a utiltiy bill from a Florida address. Not sure, but I suspect he would need a real address for the drivers license.

Our rep. could have been thinking in terms of no limit within reason. But we have had more than one rep. ( we've had 2 now ) tells us of folks staying 11 months of the year. Not sure how you would do that on 5000 points?
I couldn't see being there for that long myself. Last trip was for 17 days and we were MORE THAN READY to head home and get away from the crowds LOL

I read a study recently doind a cost and care analysis of cruise ship living vs. assisted living and concluded that for a person whose needs could be met on a cruise ship it is a great option-- the downside being isolation from land-locked family. I would imagine living in DVC would be similar.... although perhaps not as many activities or as much structure as a ship... not a bad deal.

He could stay in a one bedroom at HH for all of January for a little more than 400 points if he wanted to. That would only use up one tenth of his 4000 points. I thought of that when everyone was saying he always would have to stay in a studio and he would always be moving.

I think there are other good deals, too.

Back a few pages on this thread, I figured out he could stay mostly in studios for just under 5000 points. I for one, would not want to stay in a studio all the time!
