I met DVC member who says he lives at WDW

He could use a cell phone, and email is no problem, but where does he pick up his mail?

More importantly, where do you go for vacation when you live at WDW?
:rotfl:

I'd be happy with just 2 or 3 months out of the year.

When I was at SSR a few weeks ago there was a story in the Orlando Sentinel about the new DVC booth in Disneyland. The story said that Disney is looking at the over 50 crowd as a key growth area. This may be the reason for making Saratoga Springs so large, retirees coming down for a few weeks would prefer a more relaxed resort since they would have enough time to see the parks at their leisure. I just turned 50 and that was one of my key decisions for buying in to BCV 3 years ago and SSR last year.

A few years back we stayed in a Ft. WIlderness cabin (pre-DVC). I was doing laundry and met a nice woman from Minnesota who was retired and spending the winter. This made sense to me until she revealed that she was staying in one of those "pop-up" trailers.. I had assumed she had a giant motor home! To me a hotel is "rustic" enough... She said she and her hubby had done the same the previous year and stayed in a TENT, but then decided if they were going to stay 6 weeks they should be "off the ground" and they bought the pop-up! So I am thinking that maybe a DVC studio is pretty luxurious after all! :)

Older people have been known to share their homes with their children and families and thereby keep an address while travelling extensively. DVC works very well in this.

I wouldn't be surprised if the person we are discussing has a room or rooms in one of his children's homes.

This thread reminds me of the artical that was sent around about it being cheaper to live out the remainder of your days on a cruise than in a nursing home (and it was all too true!) :rotfl:

We plan on purchasing a 5th wheel and stay at Ft Wilderness for Jan, Feb, and March each winter when we retire. We'll then use whatever points we've accumulated by then to stay in different DVC resorts during other parts of the year.

We have the same idea. Would love to get a "seniors kind of job" there when we retire. We stayed at Fort Wilderness last October and met a fellow who had retired there from Detroit. He and his wife both worked part-time at WDW. They had been there 7 years. No joke - his job was to help maintain the campsites and he had a blower to remove leaves and smooth the unpaved area. Just another example of Disney going the extra step to make it magical! Sandie

What a concept. I would love to be able to stay on-site for a few months out of the year. The older I get the less enjoyable Michigan winters become.

Wow Mickmse2002, you took the words right out of my mouth (I use "what a concept" ALL of the time!!!) I could so do without the Michigan winters myself!!!

Laura

Nice to know there are a few Michigan people that are in DVC. Hopefully some
day we will be in Fla for a few months in the winter. Michigan winters are getting harder to take as I get older.

He could have a local post office box, or one like Mail Boxes, Etc. And have his mail sent there.

I think we met him when we first stayed at BWV 6 years ago. We stayed on cash, had taken the tour and were talking in the gift shop about the decision and wishing we could find members to talk to and see if it was as good as it sounded (didn't know about these boards then). The CM in the shop pointed pointed out a gentleman she said had been a long term member, so DH and I introduced ourselves. He talked on and on about DVC and how he would start at this resort for so many weeks, move on to HH, change to Vero, back to BWV etc, basically staying almost all year at DVC. He was SO enthusiastic he almost talked us out of it. He gave us this wierd "Stepford" feeling like there was some type of obsession going on.

Of course we really understand the meaning of obsession now :rotfl:

I think part of the appeal of this thread is the answer to the question," What would I do if no one was depending on me and all I had to worry about was myself?"

I guess I'd try a few different lifestyles.

Instead of buying a home in Florida, my in-laws "live" in or near Disney from January thru April. They share time between OKW, BCV and a Marriott property just minutes from WDW. They don't do the parks all the time...but with APs they just pop over for fun whenever they feel like it. It's a great idea! I guess you can't figure out how the Disney and DVC bug bit my DH and I? LOL. :flower:

This thread got a lot of people thinking! Maybe some new members have some thoughts.

I met a guy last year in the laundry room who also spends a lot of time in the DVC hotels- he does not own a car, but rides all over on his bike - I did not want to ask too many questions...

So...how much older is this gentleman and is he looking to remarry? ;)

stay 104 nights in a studio from January 1st :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
