I love you all, but Ohana is NOT an Irish Pub!

While there are some things that mildly bother me on the DIS...to/too, for example...I consider blogs to be informal writing at is most informal. Just above text messages, and just below the notes we used to pass in class. (I always started mine with, "Whassup?") I see "prolly" and abbreviations like WDW, WS, DD, and F World in the same light. They are all examples of dialect. If dialect was good enough for Mark Twain (probably our country's greatest writer), then it's good enough for a blogger, IMHO. Similarly, I can also overlook minor mistakes.

I guess I'm a bit of an oxymoron - I'm an English major, teacher, and someone who overcame mild learning disabilities. When I write for work, you better believe I check every word. I also correct my students' work very carefully, but this is just not the same.
I suppose that many of the 'mistakes' writers make here probably carry over into their more formal writing, which should be of some concern to them, but I also know that bad spelling does not an idiot make. If, for one moment, I judged my students solely on the merit of their spelling abilities, I would not be a very good teacher. I think I owe my fellow DIS-ers the same level of respect that I give my students. I read their posts for the merit of their ideas.

I have to add something that always catches my eye - posts about "free frigs" in resorts.
I'd rather keep drinks in fridge myself. ;)

LMAO I just thought of something. We could write up a fake review of O'hana's Irish pub and then google bomb it to the top of the first page.

O'Geez! O'Boy! O'My!

I just went to the World 'O Disney official website. Under resort dining they spell it 'Ohana or 'Ohana's. I figure WDW should know how to spell it on their own website.

Top O' the Afternoon to you All! Long live 'ODisney!

I can see using this shorthand when you IM or text on your phone. However, when writing a full paragraph on a message board such as this, I think people have time to spell out the word completely. There were no other cases of shorthand, IM-speak in the paragraph.

Well, then , if YOU think people have the time, then I guess it is so.

We have to be politically correct for dead people now?

Especially for dead people!
In a thread like this you can never tell who's pulling whose leg.
But the poster of "Where do you bury dead people? Hint: it's not a cemetary" was probably looking for the answer "cemetery" (the correct spelling).

As long as we're on the topic of words that aren't words...

WTH (acronym - might mean 'what the hey') does 'kewl' mean? Why would a grown person type it? It's not as if a person is saving keystrokes... Is it now cool to misspell cool? It's not even phonetically correct...

This thread really made me laugh!

Has anyone read Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss? I never thought a book devoted to punctuation and grammer could be so funny!

I loved that book. I read a review and just knew that I had to have it.

I think this response was kind of rude!

I meant that there is a difference between texting on your phone and posting a long message on a message board.

Goodness! Some people are very bitter!

I am an English teacher, so many things like these bother me. "Prolly" sends chills up my spine, especially when I see it in an essay. Maybe some people think it is internet slang, but many students believe that is how it is spelled. It's (not its) sad.

I am annoyed by some errors, but the one that bothers me the most is when people tell me they're going to "Disneyland" when they mean WDW. It KILLS me when someone who has been to WDW three or four times will call it "Disneyland". It is like calling "lobster" "fish" to a chef. It's just wrong.

And "Eats Shoots and Leaves" or is it "Eat, Shoots, and Leaves" ? (lol) is a great book- I borrowed it from another teacher once. I also have "The Grouchy Grammarian". I love it.

Not trying to be superior at all, or I would have taken a much sterner tone (such as one can do online, anyway). I actually found this thread to be one of good humor, a bit of levity thrown into an often too serious world. No one person or particular group of people is being singled out; no one is claiming to be a paragon of totally correct grammar or spelling; and people can laugh at my foibles and mistakes as much as they want and I won't mind as long as it's not mean-spirited.

As for buss, bussing, and busses, you are, indeed, correct. . .and I actually knew those secondary meanings, too. But, I'm old school, and as such tend to give the greatest credence to the most common form of usage. It's a function of age and Mrs Rogers, my college enunciation, diction, and walking dictionary/thesaurus professor. So, for the record, I say short-LYE-ved not short-LIV-ed and for'ead vice forehead. Flame away and I shall still be thy humble servant. . .
I meant it in a joking spirit. As I said the only reason I was aware of the alternate spellings is because I made a point of looking it up when I thought the school had botched the spelling. I can also remember being appalled in college when a biology prof. used the word "fishes". Again I consulted the dictionary for some self satisfaction only to find that it was an acceptable plural. I don't think it is ever possible to stop learning the english language.

Did everyone notice that some poor sole posted a "dinning" question yesterday? And I also read that someone planned to "chop it up to experience".

I remember a long time ago a pen pal visiting from Canada kept pronouncing Brooklyn as Brookline. I felt embarrassed correcting her, as stupid as that sounds, so I didn't. Until someone else did, and she said why I let her go around saying the wrond word all this time. She was hurt that I didn't correct her from the beginning.
O'kay, now THAT correction is, I believe, important - given that BrookLINE is adjacent to Boston (home of the Red Sox) while BrookLYN is a borough of New York (home of the - dare I put it in writing? - Yankees :teeth: )

you mean 'Ohana is not an irish pub? damn! Next thing you'll say is the Animal Kingdom is not a zoo.
That's right - Animal Kingdom is not a zoo, Animal Kingdom is nahtazu!

Yeah, but that person was so upset already, I don't think anyone wanted to correct her!

As did I. :) Darn this English language and its perverse sense of humor! Doesn't it know we need specific, qualifiable answers!? Then again, I have laughed quite a bit at this thread, including at my own idiosyncracies. ;) Oh, lordy, I hope I spelled that right. . .

I hate it when received is spelled recieved. "I" before "e" except after "c" except for those few exceptions that I'm sure I misspell. Or is it mispell...no it is misspell...how do you spell misspell? They both look wrong now!

Yea means you are excited. Yeah means you agree. That one bothers me because I used them wrong for so long before my DH corrected me  .

Cavalry--the guys on horses. Calvary-- The hill where Jesus died. Calgery--A provence in Canada. I never get those right. I just had to call my DH to spell them for me! :rotfl2:

I LOVE this thread! Thanks to the OP for actually starting a whole thread on this stuff...and thanks to the other posters for bringing up even more "kewl" stuff that drives me insane!

In response to the poster(s) who corrected the OP about 'Ohana...if I remember right, there was a thread a while back about this, and someone from Hawai'i posted, saying that while 'Ohana is the true correct form, spelling it "Ohana" isn't exactly a terrible thing. It would be no different than most of us using Hawaii(which most of us DO) over Hawai'i. Though it's not the EXACT way to spell it, it's MUCH more correct than the others.

Now, yes...I've posted this a million times, but I'm trying to change the world  ....so I have to get my dig in....its ESPRESSO...not EXPRESSO...give me some time and I'll think of a few more.

The post about the family member who says "Pettridge Farms" and "Tubberware" about made me spew my coffee....my FIL calls the paint store "Sherman-Williams"....my mom takes things for GRANITE....and my supervisor in the ophthalmology office I worked in always said SUPPOSABLY....

I'm not perfect when it comes to spelling or grammar, but these were my best subjects in school and making mistakes in this area is one of my biggest pet peeves. A learning disability is one thing...but c'mon people..learn to spell things correctly...learn to pronounce them correctly(dialect DOES make a difference though)...and learn good usage of grammar.

Okay, off to check out the free dinning thread.... :teeth:
