So if I book with points and decide to cancel for some reason (it has refundability) will my points just go back on my account?

gotta look at the T&C. for chase portal, some lets u cancel, some dont let u cancel...

:offtopic: Off-topic advice needed...Our last (and so far only) trip to WDW was in 2013, so I'm feeling a little uncertain about how to do things...If we want a particular resort, is it better to make a reservation now and then modify if/when a discount comes out to make sure we get where we want, or is it okay to wait for discounts? I'm looking at one of the Port Orleans resorts for June.

If you know where you want to stay I would book it now, especially if you are wanting French Quarter. Even though that one doesn't normally get discounts, it sells out easily without them.

Well I booked our 6-night Kyoto stay! And we still have UR points left over: 36,000 to be exact. So we have gotten business class seats roundtrip and now a 6-night stay basically for free (if you ignore the AFs on cards). This is amazing! Now I'm going to start looking at our options for our one night stay at the beginning of our trip in Tokyo and our one night stay in Hakone when we go hiking!!!! :cloud9:

That's fantastic!

So if you posted this in other places on the DISboards you'd get some mixed results...
  • Some people would say book now
  • Some people would say wait
  • And MOST people would tell you that you're what's wrong with the world today. IF you book now Disney won't need to release discounts and it hurts all of us...(these people would be wrong to give you that advice!)
Here's what I say. There is LITERALLY no penalty to book now. You can cancel and get a FULL refund. If you know you want to go, then you should book. If you aren't sure you want to go but can float the 1-night deposit, then you should book. The only reason I wouldn't book is if you are ONLY going if you get a discount (i.e. you can't afford it otherwise) AND you are worried that having a reservation may make it hard to walk away/cancel.

That's my 2 cents for what they're worth :)

Thanks! I was lucky to get the Plastiq stuff done before they put that to an end. Dh and I love bragging to people that we got business class seats for free lol. People always look at us like, "what's the catch?".

I've been in your shoes a number of times. I will book something that I want at a price I can live with just in case discounts don't come out. And then if they do I'll simply switch my reservation. That way I know that I'm going and I will be ok with whatever happens. So if you're ok with the POFQ/POR prices now, I'd say book it and watch carefully for a discount. And if not, book something that you ARE comfortable with and switch if/when the discounts come out.

How many cards did you need to open for this trip?

You're right! I should just do it. Of course, my ultimate hope is that the UR situation will be sorted out and we won't have to pay real cash money. That's why I was originally waiting to book, because of the thing of needing to transfer to Chase within 30 days (that is a thing, right?). If we can't use UR, we'll probably be staying onsite fewer nights (the rest of our trip will be at the DS Doubletree), so I should just make a reservation and I can cancel if our dreams come true regarding Chase.

So, if a discount does come out, does that mean cancelling and rebooking, or can a reservation be modified?

You can “change reservation” online with most reservations if you booked online initially. It will “feel” like modifying but for Disney’s purposes you are technically cancelling and rebooking. Hopefully that makes sense LOL!

I have been really trying to come up with our travel goals so I could ask all of you the best way to maximize points and which cards to open next. I feel like I'm flailing about without a solid goal in mine. Apparently, for my family at this time, we can't figure things out that precisely. So I'm going with the following:

I think we are good for flights (lots of MRs but still like to earn a bit more).

The issue at this point is hotels. Paying for them. I like really, really nice ones. We are spending down all of our Hyatt and SPG points on our upcoming trip in May (we don't have many to begin with). I really like Hyatts in general, but they don't always have a hotel where we want to go.

Are URs best for this (since we don't have a specific hotel/room category/date in mind)?
Are MRs a decent way to book a hotel? I've never tried it.
Or should I be looking at a co-branded Hyatt card, a Hilton card, SPG?

Any advice would be appreciated. I understand that diversity is good, but I also don't want to open too many separate points banks and not have them each have enough points to actually book a vacation (if that makes sense).

DH is at 4/24 right now (after the Chase DD in July). It should drop to 3/24 in March.

I’ve only booked one hotel with URs so far....I’m a slow baby churner ::yes::....but have looked at different locations...Orlando, Napa Marco Island....and there are a lot of hotels listed..

You know I'm a beginner churner :) Dh recently got the Chase Hyatt card to diversify our points---we only have 3 UR cards and a Discover between us. I chose Hyatt over Marriott/SPG and Hilton because (1) the points chart is easily understandable unlike Hilton's mess (2) there's a 8K property right by our dd's campus plus the annual free night can be used there (3) the 60K bonus points can stretch to 3-4 nights on our planned Australia 2020 trip and (4) we can use a free night at a property in Perth.

I will probably be going for the Hyatt card after I get a couple more Chase cards.
