I love credit cards so much!

Unrelated WWYD question:

From Feb to Aug of this year, I focused my Swagbucks (and other free) earnings on earning Disney gift cards. Went to Disney in Aug and don't plan to return for a few years. Since the trip I have been focusing those free earnings on Paypal to save for whatever our next vacation is.

We own DVC and I have never used these earnings to pay our dues. But I am thinking I should cash out first for a Swagbucks reward that I can convert to Disney. In a few years I will have a nice stockpile when we go back. If we don't go back for a longer period, I could use the stockpile to pay my dues.

However, I rarely earn more than one $25 reward per month, so going the "save for Disney route" will slow down my cash earnings for any future vacation.

I guess I am asking WWYD - cash out for Paypal each month? Continue earning Disney cards and if I get there in any given month make the second redemption for Paypal?

(I know there are ways to get discounted Disney cards and earn travel points by buying Disney GC to use to pay my dues. Not looking for advice on this. Looking for advice on what I should do with my free earnings from Swagbucks and other sites/apps).
I would cash out for the discounted $25 vcg each month and use that to pay toward something you'd be paying anyway like your electric bill. Then put $25 (that you would have spent on your electric bill) in a savings account earning some interest. Cash out anything else to paypal in the same account. You'll build a nice stash for whatever you decide in the future.

I am confused - help! I upgraded DH to the Lux card on Aug 29. His anniversary date is Oct 7. We already used the $300 credit (stacked with $60 Amex offer). Regarding the fee, this is what I thought would occur . . .

#1 - Prorated fee on Lux card between upgrade date of Aug 29 and Oct 7 with a refund of prorated fee on old card.
#2 - Once anniv date occurs on Oct 7, the full $450 fee will post and we will be eligible for another $300 Marriott credit. Should also get free night on this date (up to 50k point hotel).

He received a letter in the mail this week that says . . .

"During the billing period that occurs on or after Oct 17, 2018, you will be charged a prorated membership fee for your new card product based on the time remaining until your next account anniversary date. If applicable you will also receive a prorated refund for any membership fee paid on your previous card product."

Huh??? Does this mean that my assumptions above are correct, but the charges won't appear until after Oct 17?

OR, will it work this way:

Oct 17, 2018 - Oct 7, 2019 prorated fee - almost the full $450, less a prorated refund on the old card fee, which is negligible.

This doesn't really make sense, because it does not account for the time between the upgrade and the upcoming anniversary date. The language is confusing!!!

Why I really want to know . . .

I have the 15k offer with a $1k MSR. I'm trying to decide but want to make sure I understand how the fees will post first.

@amalone1013 - your situation seems more straight forward since you've just paid your annual fee. I'm thinking what you described is correct . . .

Well, if it helps any, I'm totally confused! But until @Lain corrected me I thought it was a calendar year credit.

I would think that the fee paid in 2017 would be what was prorated and returned and then you would owe 'most' of the $450 going forward. In the case of a new AP I haven't seen an annual fee yet - perhaps for us it is waived first year? I've forgotten everything and will wait for someone who is actually paying attention to details to weigh in?

First this is a sort of anniversary! Today my CSR and Freedom fell off my report. I know I started actively posting and not quietly lurking about the time I got the CSR. 2 years of pretty much checking in on this thread every day or two. Thank you everyone for all the help, entertainment, and friendship. :)

And now for some more help. Bear with me please.

I just barely had gotten into Plastiq when the CIP 3 times died. So I now have between 2 accounts $2k in fee free dollars.

i am working on the MSR for the BGR (10k) and the Lux upgrade (5k). So that is enough. I don’t want to use Plastiq with Amex and get eyes on my account. Main expenses I can’t use Amex right now are my mortgage and Costco.

My thought I am obsessing about today. Tagging @striker1064 since I know you have gotten it. Should I get (or have DH get) the Barclaycard Arrival Plus? I am 3/24 right now (since CSR and Freedom just dropped off). My thought is I get the Mastercard now. Use it to pay our mortgage within the 90 days and that would use the fee free dollars, use the masterpass promo on Plastiq, and also give me the $600 in travel money. Since 2% back on the Arrival Plus only effectively paying .5% right? If I wanted not to do 3 months of mortgage I could also get gift cards to Costco since it is a Mastercard and not Amex. Right?

I have also been researching but not found out anything definite...I had the Arrival Plus until 2015 when they changed the percent back on redemptions. I was just a baby starting churned and fumbling through but cancelled it basically because of that (I don’t even think I tried to retain it). Would I be okay to get it now? Have bonus post? There is some odd language in the disclosures about getting bonus which made me worry...but it is not a clear one lifetime rule. No other Barclaycard right now. I am 3/24.

OR I could just use my Chase IHG for the fee free dollars and then go back to paying mortgage old fashioned (no points) way. Thoughts?

My fee is in April. I got the letter about fee around middle October from upgrade. Letter also said if you decided against upgrade you had until fee posted then. I imagine that mid October I will have a fee post of the $450. From that they take the $300 credit. And then will calculate out from your AF and come up with some number that they will give you credit for. Then you will have your AF due at same time as before (in my case April). As far as how much that will be I don’t know. I am so not a math person. Sorry!

Anyone with the Aviator Biz think the website is super crappy? Like it makes the Citi Biz website look stellar. Nowhere on the site does it say I’m on a Barclays site, it just says American Airlines in the corner. Weird. And it lists the “Company account” and the card we received like they are 2 separate accounts. One has a zero balance, the other has a $95 balance for the annual fee, and nowhere is the one charge we made a week ago. :confused3

It’s the worst!

WOW Crazy work week. Disappeared for a little and I have a lot to catch up on. I came right here to report that I still do not see my 50,000 bonus points pending on either my CSR or CSP when the qualifying charges posted on 8/22. Additionally, as mentioned by most, both CL were slashed. When I say slashed, I mean REALLY slashed. CSR went from over 30,000 to less than 10,000. CSP went from 20,000 to less than 10,000.

Should I be worried?

This made me go check my account and I see my CSR and CSP CLs were slashed as well. Not surprising but weird that they didn’t tell me. Still no bonus points...

SO crappy. Also you can’t set up autopay. Or at least I haven’t found it.

This is unbelievable. I seriously won’t be using the card anymore because I will forget to check in and pay it!

Had anyone gotteb the bonus points on that card? When should I be expecting those? After first statement? I made the purchase right away.

It's pouring rain and chilly here. I have a headache and am grouchy. So I feel like stomping my foot. My American miles are still NOT in my account, despite making my required purchase and paying the annual fee. It's been a week since I've paid the fee. I'm spoiled by Amex, they seem to give the points immediately or even early. I haven't had this issue with my other two Barclays accounts (I'm pretty sure I'm the only one here holding 3 Barclays cards at one time). DH hasn't gotten his points yet either but I'm 5 days ahead of him on paying the fee.

Trying to decide if we push to use ILs Best Buy offers before we leave... we'll finish out DHs biz and Employee card, which will put us at $2050 in gift cards. I've estimated about $1200 for our trip next week, usually I'm high on our dining but then we put it towards souvenirs :) So we'd have an $850 start towards the cruise trip (or you know, if we sneak in another trip with APs now...). So do I push to get us up to $1450 using ILs offers or just let them go... I'll probably let it go...

I decided to go check DHs CSR and CSP also. The cls are the same. Haven't been slashed yet. I'll give it a little more time then I'll request it.

Hm that seems silly. But the promo started 9/1 and only got notified now, maybe it's rolling out in batches? I checked the Chase Pay app and don't see it advertised so have no idea how anyone would have known about it until the email. Hopefully more reports roll in as people get the emails.
Quoting myself, just got the same email for my CSR card this afternoon. Maybe I'll get one for my CF tomorrow :)

So, are you applying for the CIC before Dec? I read that the payment must be made if paying in full by Jan 15, 2019. So, my 'new up to 5K Biz card' will be gotten by late November as I have those insurance payments to make as well as DVC dues for 2019.

@Lain - put that on the spreadsheet so you can remind me what the best non Chase biz card will be!
I’m planning on applying after November 15 so it’s at least 3 months after my CSR application...so I’ll have time to get the gift cards and pay by 1/15.

My miles posted the day my statement posted. I didn't pay my first charge and annual fee until the payment due date.
Do we need to set up an online account for this card? Or can I just wait for a paper bill and do it the old fashioned way? The website sounds bad enough that I don’t even feel like trying it.

LOL you know, now that you say that I wonder if I chose to opt out of paper statements because I've never seen a thing from them since I received the card. I usually opt out anyways, but I can't specifically recall doing it with this card.

Good morning all! Last time I posted, I made a case for the suite of American Express Hilton cards which would currently net you over a million hotel points and a lot of free weekend night certificates if you're in two player mode and had none of those cards yet. This morning, I'd like to present a case for CASH. What? you say... :sad2: cash, Roni? How boring. Have you not read any of our posts here? Do you not understand the value of traveling for free on fabulous planes and in staying in glorious hotels for a fraction or none of the cost? Ah, but I do... and I have enjoyed all those things very much. But at some point, I got a little tired. I took 7 trips in one year and on the 7th, I came home and thought... you know what? I need to rest. I need that ol' cliche vacation from my vacations. I realized I really like home... my comfy bed, and my little dog and being surrounded by all my favorite people and things. And that's okay. When I finally slowed down, I started to think about how fast it all goes. Not just our points and miles (lets face it, you can burn through a couple hundred thousand for something that lasts a week). But life. I was yearning for something that lasted longer so I'm going to tell you something that will make some of you pass out. I spent a boatload of UR points on a 70 in screen tv that is still hanging in my living room some two years later and has hosted countless movie nights filled with laughter and popcorn and candy and silliness in a room full of millennials I really really love. It plays an app called ArtCast that runs through some of the most beautiful paintings by classic artists and an app that will continuously roll ocean waves, swaying palm trees and thunderstorms when those are the things my heart craves. It makes me happy. That tv, silly as it may sound... was the catalyst for a loooong conversation with myself in my head about what really matters to me, what I, myself find important and lasting... not the bloggers, not reddit, not the internet at large, not the influencers or Instagram or some stranger telling me what the worth of my points are. YOU are the only one who really knows that. And it will take a journey with real highs and some lows, to figure it all out. Those of you who are long time veterans already know this. But there are some new reading here. I know there are. And there are also some of you beginning to wonder... what the heck am I doing and why.

So is it a TV I paid for with Chase points that makes my "Case for Cash?" Nah, it's just my long winded way of saying there are many many ways to make this work for you and... I wish someone had said a few things to me before I got started in all of it myself. I wish I had a me that said Slow down. Take your time. Figure out what you really want - YOU ... not Doc, or the Points Guy or Frequent Miler or Miles to Memories, or reddit, or even the DIS. You. In the end, I realized that for me... I both wanted and needed something tangible that would last a long time, in addition to all the amazing memories we were making in those fleeting weeks that seem to disappear all too fast. Even better? A way to do both. Something lasting, tangible, and magical memory building all rolled into one.

What if I told you that my love of American Express credit cards bought my initial DVC contract for cash? That 50 points at the Boardwalk buys a stay at home mom about to experience Empty Nest syndrome 5 nights and 6 days in a standard view studio villa every year during the Food and Wine Festival all the way through early December and its lovely Christmas festivities and then again through six weeks of winter? You choose... when do you want to go? This is a Disney forum - so I know in my heart that those words will mean a lot to some of you. And if you have any interest in DVC at all... it's possible. And that contract you purchase doesn't disappear in a week or two. It lasts for 20 years or more. Now that is my case for cash. I do not manufacture any spending but I do have two kids in college at the same time and one who finished not long ago so our expenses have been high for several years. If you have a side business, a rental home, college expenses, etc, it adds up fast. For others... the process might be slower and you'll want to save the Schwab Plat card for your very last card. Anyway, that's enough. I'm sorry I keep writing books to you. It's just nice to have a place to talk about it with people who actually get it, or are trying to learn. We have so many good options for these points. SO many. Make sure you're thinking outside the box once in awhile and taking stock in the middle to make sure you're getting out of it what is really important to you. A couple blog posts to get you thinking:

Love this post!

I totally agree how points are valued and used should be an individual decision based on one's needs and circumstances at any given moment in time. I was lucky and never allowed allowed myself to get too caught up in what the bloggers say a point/mile is worth. I used their valuations more as a tool and guide to look into my own options and make a judgement call based on my needs, point balances and ease of replenishing a given currency. I feel the same about about travel destinations. I have my own bucket list places I want to visit and there are the short getaway trips that are nothing fancy but we want to do because we can thanks to a free night certificate. However, I will say that the bloggers have added countries, airplanes and places to stay to my bucket list that were not initially on the radar. I can appreciate having my horizons expanded but I don't feel the need to go somewhere just because "all the cool kids" are doing it.

I think 2019 and 2020 we may slow down just a little. It is easy to get caught up into going anywhere all the time just because you can with the points and miles once you've been at it for few years and have learned how to keep a good stash. There is something to be said for being home. I was looking at the calendar to see when I'd be home over a weekend to make plans with a friend and realized I wouldn't until December  That kinda freaked me out so I cancelled a couple of my weekend F&W trips. Someone is going to be really happy that their Beach Club Villas wait list came through LOL

Generally, I am all about the points and miles vs cash. I have always valued points and miles for our travel purposes over cash as they allow us to do some things fairly easily that I simply can't with cash back. That said, even I will go for a cash back card when the opportunity is convenient and fits into a plan. The BoA Travel card got me $500 off a Victoria & Albert's dinner last year. I've had a Cap 1 Venture, Wells Fargo Propel and Barclay Arrival+ in 2 player mode that got us $3,000 worth of excursions on a Disney cruise to Norway, Iceland and Scotland back in 2015. I don't generally MS but picked up the WFP card again so that I could start. If I get burned and shut down by a bank I don't care if its WF.

I'm glad you posted this as well as your examples. I know @SouthFayetteFan myself and a few of the other veteran churners and hackers have posted it before about there being no wrong way to redeem your points and miles. It is well worth repeating for the newbies and I absolutely love the specific examples you shared. If we had started the travel hacking journey around the time we bought DVC, I would have totally considered your strategy for a DVC purchase extremely valuable. Never would have even thought of it to be honest.

eBags was earning 20 UA miles/$ through MileagePlus Shopping earlier this week! I'm so frustrated with the timing of all this. I've been eyeing another Tumi Alpha 2 carry-on. :badpc: I guess I don't need it right away, but I'm always looking for good deals to stack.

So glad I didn't notice that. It's a struggle to convince myself that I really don't need more packing cubes. #addictedtopackingcubes

Forgot about this Chase 5xt point promo, will probably just do that and forget about ILs Best Buy offers.

So the real question is... when I get home from work do I drag DH to Staples to see if we can get a no fee Visa GC? Or do I stop on my way home and see if they even have them, and then if they do buy mine and take him back to get his? :rotfl:

Pretty sure I'm crazy and this isn't a good idea but with the increased offer I thought I would check before totally writing it off.

Would I get approved for the BoA AS biz card using only the $7800 yearly rental income with no other income?

Had anyone gotteb the bonus points on that card? When should I be expecting those? After first statement? I made the purchase right away.
We used it to make a purchase last week and the purchase isn’t even showin. Crazy. So I treated myself to a Frappuccino today, you know for my one purchase.

This stinks. I’m just going to ignore them until I get a statement.

LOL you know, now that you say that I wonder if I chose to opt out of paper statements because I've never seen a thing from them since I received the card. I usually opt out anyways, but I can't specifically recall doing it with this card.
The whole website just sucks. First I couldn’t get it set up, got a message that said please call. DH calls and they tell him they can’t help, try the website again and if the Aviator Biz website doesn’t work, try the regular Aviator website. Actually had to google the website because the paperwork with the card doesn’t mention a website anywhere. However, when setting up the online access (which worked the third time around) it DID ask if I wanted to opt out of paper statements. So maybe you did without thinking because it was a prompt.

I may be wrong but I'm fairly sure they would have to report the liabilities anyway if the bonus has been earned. The fact they are delaying the posting of the points doesn't alter their obligation to report the liability.

However, what they might be doing is delaying the points posting to prevent redemption. Why? Well a point redeemed is a 'realized' expense, especially if redeemed via CSR @ 1.5x, whereas points outstanding is a potential liability which may or may not become realized. Now lets say Chase has some historical data that says only 82% of outstanding points get redeemed at an average cost to chase of 0.7cpp. They could reasonably report that liability on their financials which would be significantly different to reporting a liability of 100% of outstanding points at the maximum theoretical redemption value of 1.5cpp.

Make sense?

ETA: @Lain - On reflection, this post may be nit-picking, and is really just reflecting what you posted anyway. :)

Thanks! Makes complete sense.

I really like your style.:) When you can give up a Beach Club reservation during Food and Wine and feel ok about it, that says something doesn't it? And for the record, someone over at the Boardwalk is going to feel the same way for the same reasons. That just made me smile.

I took a deep breath this weekend and I'm feeling a little wistful as I always do when fall rolls around. We all have a lot to be grateful for, don't we? Lotta good memories inside of me. For the first time in a long time... I have 0 trips planned. Feels a little strange, a little good, and a lot right. For now.

Carry on you beautiful people. I sure do enjoy reading you all. And hey.. is @Lain in Hawaii right now??? Awfully nice to live vicariously... while I wait for the spirit to move this wild child somewhere new on some other day.
