I love credit cards so much!

All righty, I've decided I'm going to try to get my multi-quote on today...

...Would there be any restrictions on how soon I could apply for an Amex biz card after 2 Chase personal cards? I think the only "downside" would be a second hard pull on my credit.

Agreed, definitely need it, but not as fun as say... DVC points to buy haha
I was worried about Amex until someone here mentioned it's basically like Oprah and the "you get a car! you get a car! You get a car! Everybody gets cars!" episode back in the day. That's Amex with cards. I don't know why, despite everyone's assurance's I'd be fine, I needed that visual to get comfortable with apply for Amex cards. (I now have 4, oldest is 8 months- maybe I got too comfortable!)

Is anyone on here good with the United award flight website? For some reason when I look up Chicago-Tokyo for May I can see a flight there but when I want to get a return flight I get an error. I’m not having this problem with lax-Tokyo.
Edit: I tried a one way back from Tokyo to Chicago and for some reason the whole last week of May is gone for award flights. Is that normal? Seems strange

Are you making sure you are logged into your UA account when searching? They have slightly more availability if you're a UA cardholder- VERY slightly more but still it's something.

Playing around with booking and Calypso, you were not kidding about the Saver Awards. I'm on United.com looking for next summer and even on the latest possible day to book there are no business saver awards coming up! I saw some last night but none to be found this morning.
Am I correct in thinking that in order to book a Saver Award in business, I have:
1. Plan to buy the tickets about a year out (which I what you have said, I believe)
2. Transfer miles to UAL and hope for the best committing to that airline, since you can't put them back in the UR bank.
3. Buy individual one way tickets, and be flexible with the airport and the dates.
Or pay double the points for the tickets.
I wish there was a place to see where the saver awards are, what dates and what airports.
Just wanted to say do not transfer those miles until you see the availability you want, I don't see any advantage to that since as you mentioned you can't put them back. I booked a UA award a few months ago. I found the award, transferred from Chase and the miles were immediately available at UA. I think I had to log out and log back into UA but that was it.

Speaking of cash back (although this isn't as easy of a spend):

Capitol One is tough though. If DPs indicate this card is easier to get, I may give it a whirl.

The Venture denial scarred me too! I was like 6/24 at the time. I'll keep an eye for other DPs on this card as well but hitting all 3 bureaus really added to the pain of that denial...

I totally get this! Dh discovered yesterday he needs new tires, and we just finished our last two MSR. I am pretty much tapped out until this fall when I try to double dip something after we move below LOL/24.
On another weird note, how does one become a American AA Gold Member and what does it do for you? I got a nice little folio congratulating me on becoming one, with a membership card. I haven't ever flown AA and closed both of my AA credit cards months ago, and my miles are actually 4 months away from expiring LOL, so not sure how I possibly got gold?
Do you have status in another program that might auto-match status to AA or something? I think you're the 2nd person we've heard of this from, I believe @calypso726 had this happen as well?

Hope DoC's wrong, hope DoC's wrong, hope Doc's wrong...

:guilty:

ETA: Not affecting me at the moment. Existing link works and I generated a new one from the app that works too. Haven't tried the general RAF page yet. Maybe that's where this issue is?
ETA2: Yep. I can't figure out how to RAF from my account so I tried the general page and when I put in my CSR info I get that message.
I'm not too concerned at this point. If it doesn't re-activate in a couple months then I'll believe it.

NOOOOOO I had someone's support link I was planning to use as a thank you for supporting me!
Try their link anyway to see if it works! I went over there to check mine and clicked some other's links and a good chunk of them are still working. If you get the offer concluded/not available message I'd shot them a DM and see if they can use the app to generate a new link.

Ok, i'm putting the breaks on this for right now. I'm still able to generate a link from the app at least and both the new and old links work fine. With the trouble on CSP and CIP links being reported over the last week I thought there was trouble on the CSR's for some people too and thought this was the outcome. But, could just be a RAF site glitch? But "concluded" is troubling in the error message. Hopefully it's an error on the error.
I think they just ran a refresh on some of the links and also screwing up their RAF site.

In other hysterical internet drama, TPG/MommyPoints posted an article about Chick Fil A earlier and the comments section is going wild.
popcorn:: ETA... I take back my popcorn, some of those comments are just so angry and dumb it's kinda depressing. I think I'd better stick to Reddit and Twitter for my popcorn dramas!

I wish there was a place to see where the saver awards are, what dates and what airports.

Sometimes they are there immediately after the airline loads inventory. Sometimes the show up a few days or weeks later. Sometimes not at all.

1. Buying tickets and booking award tickets are two different things. Just clarifying for newbies that may be lurking and learning. I have points ready to go and am ready to book a year out. With some airlines, I am actually online refreshing a browser as inventory is being loaded.

2. Chase UR points transfer instantly, or close enough to instant. So, there really isn't a need to transfer those in advance. With a UA booking, I will have UR open in one tab and UA in a another. If I see the flight I want, I transfer UR points to UA, refresh my browser on the UA tab or log in and out and then make the award booking. UR points are too valuable for me to transfer speculatively. The only time I've ever done a speculative points transfer is by picking up those 4 Marriott travel packages with everything going to Alaska Air.

3. Yes, if you can.

Since we always go for first class seats when flying BA to the UK, (except that one time we slummed it in business ) we usually book one way award flights. If I wait for the return flight to load 355~ days out, seats in first may have disappeared for the departure. If you are flexible with the airport and date, you have a lot more options. I posted recently about my struggle to book award flights to Scotland using a companion voucher with British Airways. I had been stalking the BA site on an off for months, then I was checking right at inventory loading for weeks before I had to book. I was becoming increasingly alarmed over the fact that they simply were not releasing first class flights out of Miami. Mind you, in the past I could count on 4 first class awards seats being released for each flight. So, I had to get flexible with the airport and date. I wound up looking up every airport BA flies out of from the Midwest to the east coast on a 3 cabin plane. Once I had my choices narrowed down, I started to look for patterns out of each airport. I wound up booking us to depart a day earlier than we were planning, flying out of JFK even though I live in south Florida. I booked an evening JFK-LHR flight of course and couldn't book the connection to EDI until the following day since those flights weren't released yet. I also wound up doing something slightly convoluted for the return since my dates were not flexible on that end and the flights times would not work and we are also flying back home from London to JFK. My flights to/from MIA and JFK were unable to be booked until well after I completed the booking for the return flight from the UK to the US. Those flights would have been on US airlines and their inventory doesn't load until 330~ days out. I wasn't worried because there are plenty of flights to and from south Florida to New York across several airlines. We have enough points and miles in various currencies that I'd be able to pick whatever was convenient. I mention all this so that you and anyone else following along that booking award flights up front isn't always easy or convenient. In my case, the goal wasn't getting to Scotland however possible, it was using the BA companion voucher because the opportunity arose. BA taxes and fees when connecting in London are not worth paying unless you are all the way up front. I'm sure many would argue that they aren't worth paying even all the way up front. I think they count toward EQDs for AA status purposes. Still trying to figure out how all that works, so I may be wrong.

I'm up to 44 karma points after posting in the trip reports thread this week! I didn't know there were that many of you reading it to upvote my post :rotfl2:
I just jumped ahead to read your TR there.

How do you track your points and such? Do you use a spreadsheet? I would totally rename it Melissa's Points Empire!

possibly...which is why I asked here first. Wonder if it has come up on reddit since the new SW rules started.
ETA: I want the 3 for the points, not so much the CP. I will get the CP either way. I wonder if I should flip it and do the SW DD first, and the SW biz first of year. That would get me all the points eventually, and the CP right away, but space the cards out.

Hopefully @SouthFayetteFan or @Lain....have responded....since you need the CP now....that may be the best way to go dd the SW personals then the SW business later...as long as it doesn’t put you over 5/24

I will say there is a really incredible trip success story in there this week from wildcatengineer. It's an old one, but it's pretty cool.

The Citi 4th night free NYE? That's epic :D I read it when he posted on DoC and read it again when he reposted it there cuz that's just awesome.

Here's the link if anyone's interested in a story of a free $12k a night NYC NYE:
https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/96og3l/trip_reports_churning_success_stories_and/e43y4qb/

Sadly that was back in the day and AFAIK not possible now. But a good reminder to take advantage when you can because you don't know what the future will hold.

ETA: I have no idea how a dance party got into the original post... the computer must have been super excited for that guy too

That story is bananas and I love it. It's no wonder Citi changed the benefit, but good on people that were able to take advantage of it like that!

Also, super nice hotel. Haven't stayed there yet because it's just madness right outside the door all the time, but maybe some day.

LOL, yep this is me with the AMEX too.
As far as status, I don't believe I have status in any programs. Very strange.

Plastiq questions for the experts. @Lain, @wendow (sure there are others but as I can barely keep track of my stuff sometimes I don't know for sure who else).
  • I set up my account and successfully made a loan payment to the credit union. I have the $500 fee free dollars for that, but when I made the initial set up I scheduled it as a weekly ACH payment. ($500 payment set every week as I want this loan paid off quick) The next payment just went through and it didn't use the fee free dollars. Do I need to do something different for that to trigger the fee free?
  • I referred DH to his own Plastiq account and set up our mortgage on it. I put it as a check to mail immediately. Under kind I put "clubs" since I figured it was a credit union. Do you all think that will be ok? Looks like CIP was charged this morning. Should it be okay now or is it possible Plastiq will still reject payment on this month?
  • For those that do loans do you do a monthly payment scheduled in advance or just month to month? Especially with the mortgage what is the option that is recommended?
Sorry in advance I am being so anal about this. Stupid UR greed...

well, poop, ill be there during peak times too... :\

I upvoted! I was surprised you weren’t downvoted into oblivion for paying the cash rate and choosing to vacation at Disney.
hoping the dynamic of churning is changing since there is no referrals. I do see a lot of ppl help out now.

in other news, im having a lot of issues with keeping things cool. :\ AC in car broke, Central Air broke, Portable AC broke... last night my fridge stop working... FML. all within the spam of 2 months...

You actually have to tell Plastiq to use your FFD's. It's on the last page under the total amount where it shows you the amount you are paying plus the fee. It's very small and you click where it says "Use my fee free dollars" (or something like that).

Plastiq can still reject your payment, even though your card has been charged, but I'd say it's looking good at this point! I always schedule my mortgage to go immediately, because I feel like it has a better chance of getting out that way. I have my category as 'rent/real estate' but I also did experiment with different categories when I paid my mortgage using an Amex. I never had any problem getting it through.

I don't schedule any of my payments monthly simply because 1) the mortgage I want to send immediately and not have it 'sitting' in their system and 2) they require you to input an end date and most of the things I pay (lawn care, dance tuition, health insurance, etc), I have no idea when we will stop paying. I just sit down once a month to do my mortgage and then do all the other payments at the same time.

Ruh roh.. I'm new to this thread, but what new rules? I have the SW CCs + the CP, and I was planning on doing the same for DW when the CP expires.

The "new rules" are that you are only allowed to have 1 SW personal branded card (Like the one Chase Sapphire rule, and similar to the new Marriott rules). You can double dip the personal cards or get the biz card followed by 1 personal.

Forgot my lunch again today. We have a food truck coming to work today, so I can check that out. Just figured out I left my wallet in my gym bag, so the only card I have on me is my SPG personal. No CSR or Discover... womp womp. Hope they take AMEX.

Umm, so far... I don't? :rolleyes1 Haha. I keep thinking that I need to get on top of that and get better about it, but just haven't had the time. Fortunately I don't have much because other than UR, I just have Marriott, Hilton, and AA miles. But I really need to write it down and I want to keep track of my redemptions too. I'm just awful with spreadsheets and keeping up with them!

Wow! You guys are awesome!! Would you be willing to help a newbie with a few questions? I am looking to fund as much of our next disney vacation as possible. My questions are:
We live in an area that has Delta, Frontier, and Spirit. I looked into the chase points exchange and they do not offer either of these airlines as choices in booking flights. We do have southwest, AA, united but they are all with stops and expensive. Would Delta AMEX be a good choice? Right now they are offering 70,000 points. Good Choice?

I would like to earn points toward tickets and rooms. We like to stay onsite. Would would be a good choice for that? TIA:worship:

Ok, so I'm not an expert. Only been at this for about a year. However, almost all my experience/hacking goals are related to Disney trips. You may have gotten all of the info you need, I'm not quite caught up on this thread.

We were kind of in the same boat as you in regards to our Disney travel. We had APs. Were booking rooms, renting DVC. I couldn't wrap my mind around how I would use cc points for Disney travel.

I have found that UR points (points earned from Chase) can be used to book rooms at Disney. You will most likely not want to book directly thru the UR portal, as they're showing the rack rate. Instead, will want to call in the tours and travel dept. They can book at whatever discount you are eligible. AP discount etc... So you get the reduced rate and then...

If you have a CSR you get to redeem at 1.5x value.

So back to what cards to get....
You will want to have the CSR, imo. This is the card you want to book with. It has a hefty 450 af, However it comes with a 300 travel credit (one idea...could buy 1 persons ticket to offset. Pretty sure undercovertourist codes as travel). Also, TSA precheck credit. That could be helpful since you're flying. Those credits really help to bring the AF down to a reasonable amount.

Sign on for CSR is 50k I believe, CSP the same. CIP (business card) is 80k. Ideally, you would want all these cards.

So, this is where I don't want to lead you wrong. But, if it were me and I could meet the spend. I'd prob do the CIP for one of you...and the CSR/CSP double dip for the other. I feel like I would hit this hard, if possible, knocking out the spend so I could book the hotel with the CSR points. Then down the road..Then after that CIP player 1 refers player 2. Eventually do the same with CSR and CSP but prob much later.

If you do the CIP, CSR and CSP combo you should have around 195k UR. For an average stay this will be more than enough points for your room (esp when considering booking with a discount and redeeming at 1.5x with csr). You may have enough to book your fights thru the UR portal.

I know nothing about delta or delta cc's, im sure a delta card (optimally a biz card) would be a great avenue for flights. If the 100k points from a CSR/CSP double dip is enough for you room. You may want to omit the CIP bit and replace with a Delta card.

You def have options, just see what works best for you :) p.s. Disney trips are SO much better when you've used your travel hacking skills to go for cheap!

Oh my, this was us a few years ago...everything went out at once...still haven't fixed the a/c in dh's truck. It's old and we live in Denver where summers aren't too bad. He goes to work when it's still cool and he comes home drenched and needs a shower, which he always takes after work anyways.
