I love credit cards so much!

Hmmm... Was going to buy a Costco GC with my Discover card just now. It looks like they are going to let me apply the last $20 I have on a Costco GC to this purchase...

I agree. I just think it needs a bit of an update though in terms of the money skills they teach. They spend a ton of time on writing checks and zero time on using any other form of payment. Writing checks still happens for me too but it's about 1% of the bills I pay. I can go months without writing a check....And I haven't sat down to balance my checkbook in about 15 years.

Like I said, the year my dd18 did it, she campaigned and got elected mayor. The skills she learned in that...how to talk to people to find out what mattered to them, how to find ways for groups to work together for common good, how to communicate your ideas to a large audience...I found those skills really valuable. My ds10 will do it next year. I still think the program has value!
I can agree with that. I learned to write checks in 7th grade (our project involved building a bridge out of toothpicks in groups, and we had to purchase supplies, etc). This town idea sounds like a much better project... wider range of skills.

The most checks I wrote was in college, mainly because of rent and splitting utilities and the grocery bill with my roommates. And I only had my debit card, so I was really good about balancing my checkbook at the time. I stopped after college because I then had more money coming in than going out since I had moved back home - no more lean months :P Since college, I've only written a handful. I actually haven't ordered checks since I switched my account to Chase in May 2017. And the only thing I've run into where I wish I had checks is as an easy-ish way to move money to DHs account since we're slackers and haven't done a joint account yet.

@SouthFayetteFan My dh is wanting to open a Schwab investment account. We will eventually want to cash out MR's but this is not for that. Most of our MR's are in my name so does this brokerage account need to be in my name?

I did that same project in school!! Mine was in my ELP class which is like an extra class for gifted and talented students. I really liked learning how to write a check and buy supplies for our bridge. I don't think our bridge turned out the best, but it was still fun. We also learned how to play a stock market game when I was in that class, but that one wasn't nearly as fun lol.

How do the banked 2018 points expire this January? my 2019 year begins February and they are now banked into 2019, so wouldn't they expire 2/2020?
How do the points I borrowed from 2020 also expire this January? If I cancel my trip in March, withing the 31 day rule I would get those points back in my 2019 points. I have until September 2019 to bank them into 2020, and they wouldn't they expire 2-2021?

Hopefully this trip won't have to be cancelled because this is all too confusing. LOL

Since your 2019 use year begins on Feb 1, 2019 any points from use year 2018 (feb1, 2018 to Jan31,2019) banked into use year 2019, will expire on Jan 31, 2020.

Any points borrowed from use year 2020 (feb1, 2020 to Jan31, 2021) in effect become 2019 use year points and will expire Jan31, 2020.

Any banked or borrowed points become useable only in the use year you banked or borrowed them into. Once banked or borrowed, they have the life remaining in the use year you banked or borrowed them into. No 'backsies'.

Only the original 2019 points from your 2019 use year can be banked forward. You would have until Sept 30, 2019 to bank them and until Jan31, 2021 to use them.

Another point - once you bank them - they are no good for any reservation you might want to book between Oct1, 2019 and Jan 31,2020.

Well, yes you will eventually need one to cash out in your name. Have you looked to see if they still have the $100 bonus out there? We opened a brokerage+checking and got $100 for doing it I think.

Just got caught up after some business travel the past few days. I came home to a bunch of bills (totaling about $12,500) that I have to pay for my mom. None have a CC option. Plastiq doesn't seem to make sense to use anymore. Should I actually be using checks???

You could possibly buy visa or mastercard gift cards and then buy money orders...…….

I can bank my 2019 points that were originally 2019.

I will not be able to bank any 2019 points that were originally 2020 points. They would remain 2019 points if I should need to cancel.

Thanks for talking this through with me. :-)
Yep...your correct....the good news is they are super easy to rent out if for some reason you do have to cancel and can’t use them

Gah!! I almost didn't recognize you since you changed your picture!!

I was reading through your DISchurners write up. Looks like the $100 bonus is still there. We will just open in my name so we are ready to cash out those MR's in a year or so :)

As many here can probably imagine...I loved the stock market game, LOL!

LOL! I just said "ack, he changed his helmet." Since we're watching the Red River Rivalry game DH was totally confused :)
We changed uniforms back in 2015 but I had kept the same helmet avatar here. I figured it was time to update LOL!

fyi, for those who are planning on using the freedom card at costco this week, hold off if u don’t want to call in, some reason costco isn’t coding 5x right now. i’m sure it be fix quickly though.

Mine from 10/2 posted with the bonus points.

Have anyone used MR to book Disney vacations?

I knew Citi points were possible to book Disney trip but I didn't realize Amex did it too. Has anyone done it before?
How does this work? I don’t think we’ve ever discussed this possibility here before.

EDIT: are you sure it’s a good value? AMEX has some pretty crumby ways to use MRs at < 1cpp.

No I'm not! I read it on Miles to the Magic. I honestly didn't even know it was a possibility. The post said you had to call to get it done. I was curious about it.
