I love credit cards so much!

Those of you with 2nd and 3rd chase biz cards...how much did you use your first biz card? I have a couple small charges go to DH's CIP monthly. Wondering if that is sufficient.

My first Chase biz card was the CIP with a $16k CL and we use it heavily but pay it off every month. My second was the Marriott Biz that got approved with just a $5k CL. I hit the $3k MSR and haven’t put a cent more on it. But I took the $5k CL approval as a sign that maybe I needed to start lowering my CLs. I made some significant reductions, almost $15k across all cards, and waited for the new CLs to update to the credit reporting agencies, before applying for the CIC. CIC was approved with a $12k CL. Then I noticed Chase increased my Marriott Biz CL to $8k. I trimmed both the CIC and Marriott Biz down to something more sensible. I really do think total credit extended plays a huge part in Chase approvals, much more than utilization, and as long as you keep your CLs (think of it as a proxy for risk) low and space out your applications, you should be fine for approval. I haven’t tested 4 Chase cards with a SSN using this strategy, but I don’t want to push my luck.

I already have an Amex Biz Plat, so I followed the instructions for the self-referral for the Biz Green. Is there any downside to applying for this card? Does the once per lifetime bonus apply to this card? Do I need to wait until the AF posts and then cancel? I usually keep most of our cards, so haven't done many cancellations. Thanks!

You have until tomorrow (or is it today where you are already?) to decide because the referral bonus ends 8/8/18. The Biz Green is a charge card so it doesn’t count against Amex’s 5 credit card limit. It’s a business card so it doesn’t add to Chase’s 5/24 count. And since it doesn’t report to your personal credit report, any utilization on it doesn’t affect your credit score. The Biz Green does have a once per lifetime bonus limitation, so if you’ve had this card before, you won’t get the 5k MR welcome bonus; but you should still get the 20k MR referral bonus from your Biz Plat. Conversely, if you haven’t had this card before, the usual welcome offer is 5k MR anyway, and you usually won’t have the opportunity to pick up 20k MR from self-referral. The card has a remarkably low MSR for the welcome bonus — a single purchase within your first year. I did a $1 Amazon reload and I’m waiting on the bonus to post. The annual fee is waived the first year, and you can cancel the card when the fee posts next year. Wait a year before canceling. Again, this is a charge card so it’a not like it’s taking up a slot against your 5 Amex credit card limit.

Downsides? Amex introduced anti-churning terms recently that can deny welcome bonuses on new cards if they determine you have a history of gaming their cards, including how many cards you’ve opened and closed. One would think closing cards weighs more heavily than opening cards (or keeping them open). Over at r/churning, people who have reported getting the welcome bonus denial warning message seem to have in common meeting the MSR on new Amex cards, then putting no spend on the cards after they’ve gotten the bonus. So while cards like the Biz Green may not have any ongoing value for putting spend on it, it’s probably a good idea to put some occasional purchases on the card to keep Amex happy even at the lost opportunity of putting that spend on a card with a category bonus or MSR.

I was going to ask if an Amazon reload of $1-$2 would be enough to trigger the bonus. We got our cards yesterday. I did a $2 reload using mine. How long do you expect it to take for the bonus to post?

Basically never. P2 has 3 Chase biz cards (CIP, Marriott, Southwest) all obtained within a few months of each other, and each one had MSR only and was then sock-drawered.

I don't think Chase cares about how much you use their cards at all. They have their approval algorithm, and as long as your credit profile fits what they want, you're good. This is of course just an educated guess from a churner, but as far as I can tell the only banks that care about ongoing usage are Amex and Barclays.

Marriott Biz was my first. I hit the MSR and then quit using it. I now put any Marriott charges on it, but that’s it. Approved for CIP 4 months later.

Reminded this morning of why I always manually pay my card and don’t use automatic payments... did automatic payment on my CSP that was due yesterday and it’s still not showing as paid and no money has drafted from my account :badpc:

I think @speedyfishy bought a pack of gum on hers a while back. So yes, a $2 reload should be fine. It takes about 2 statements for points from a first MR card to post, and about 2-3 days after meeting spend when you already have other MR cards.

Can y'all even believe we now have 90+ members on the DISchurner's forum?? Crazy! How long ago did @SouthFayetteFan get us going? About a year ago or so? It seems it has worked exactly as it was intended to...support links and more secretive info there...while keeping chatter here.

By my last count, we actually have 186 members, but only 94 are subscribed. Props to @SouthFayetteFan for setting this up, and to everyone else for making it a success. Please keep it going: join in the discussion here and our community over at reddit, contribute by asking questions and posting your knowledge and experiences, and use each other's links when applying for new cards to show support for members who've helped you and you want to help with their travel goals.

I think it probably depends on how you use Southwest.... and when was the last time you received a sign up bonus for the card you have. And, are they giving you any other incentive to upgrade? (extra points or anything?)

There are a number of scenarios where upgrading your current card is worth it and a number where cancelling that card to apply for the new card to get the sign up bonus on top of all that good stuff is worth it. (and maybe can even wrangle it to do the upgrade, use the travel credit and get the extra points, and then cancel it and try for the sign up bonus still.)

If I wasn't eligible to get the sign up bonus for it (I'm within 24 months of my last bonus or I'm 5/24 or more) and I've received my anniversary points for this year already and I have Southwest travel in the next year I can use the travel credit for, I would take the upgrade.

For me, I am eligible to get the sign up bonus for it and my next travel is just outside of a year, so if I were offered (which I wasn't yet :() I probably wouldn't. I'd probably cancel my card and then try to sign up as a new card in a time period so that I could use the travel credit. That way I get the sign up bonus and the rest of the good stuff for that annual fee.

ETA: I just realized I might sound like Debbie downer :) Not my intent. You are correct, it's a pretty good value for the annual fee. If you use SW like that, they did a good package for that card. I don't think we really found much of a downside to that card in our discussions that I recall :)
ETA2: Well not much downside other than a quibble about the sign up bonus being two parts and the large spend needed to get the second part.
I haven't gotten the offer yet, but based on this I will do it if I can....since mine are lees than 2 years old,I was keeping them bc of the retention offers plus I wanted to refer Dh to one of them soon....

Thanks for all the detail. I applied this morning and was approved. Can always use a few more MRs! Again, thanks for taking the time to respond.

OK, thx. I just cancelled his SW plus a week or so ago. That freed up about $30k. Should be good on the total CL front.

I now have two Chase biz cards (CIP & Marriott). I use my CIP all the time. My dh has two Chase biz (CIP & CIC). We never use his CIP.

OK thanks. Just the Verizon bill goes to DH's CIP to keep it active. Mine gets all the rest of the action.

Ok great!
And on another note about that suntrust bonus changing yesterday like you mentioned....guess who got a suntrust mailer in the mail for a $500 bonus yesterday!? DH!! Perfect timing!

Marriott Biz was my first. I hit the MSR and then quit using it. I now put any Marriott charges on it, but that’s it. Approved for CIP 4 months later.

Great DP. Thanks! His CIP was 4 mths ago too.

I was looking forward to using my CIP for my Verizon bill but found out I would lose a $20/month discount for not using my checking account
