I don't have Verizon, but instead AT&T. It appears both offer a similar autopay discount from what I hear. Essentially, with AT&T, individual plans gets a $5 monthly discount (family plans are $10/month) if you SETUP autopay. I've been doing what
@amalone alluded to, and it has worked smoothly thus far. Essentially, I always overpay my cell phone bill such that it takes place before the next scheduled auto-draft. If there is a zero balance, or negative balance, the auto-draft won't occur, BUT the system appears to just recognize the SETUP of the autopay when applying the discount and not actually taking into account the actual usage of auto-pay. This is the case for AT&T at least. I see the $10 discount off our bill every month, and I've done this for the last 6-7 months I believe. I also have an employee discount attached.
