I love credit cards so much!

Amex is rather fickle.

And with that, I'll jump right back in.

If you get an Amex signup offer you like, don't close your browser window, take just a moment to think about it, and just DO IT -- strategy be d*mned.

I pulled the 100k MR offer on the Amex Platinum for my wife a few times last month, but hesitated thinking I've replicated it a few times, I'll pull it again when I’m ready -- but haven't seen it since. My wife tells me that she has to travel to LA and Tokyo for work in June, and is without a Plat for lounge access and hotel status. She says it's not a big deal, but I know she enjoys the perks and I just want to make her work trips as pleasant as I can. I've been trying various tricks on and off all afternoon without luck -- not even the 75k MR incognito offer. Amex seems to have dropped off Cardmatch again. I am not burning a slot for her to be put on as my AU, and heck no am I applying for just the 60k MR offer (and it doesn't even seem like I can generate a referral from my MB Plat to bring that up to a net 75k MR). I guess I have at least 2 more weeks to try.

Out of curiosity, I tried pulling the 20k MR offer for the BBP -- nope, offer is no longer available for me.

:badpc:

Meanwhile, I applied for the CIC this morning and it's been stuck at 30 days all day.

This waiting and anticipation for the next step is killing me.

So I'm scheduling next month's bill payments into Plastiq. Sat there debating just throwing rent on the SPG personal that I haven't touched yet, wiping out that MSR in one go, and pocketing those sweet 30k SPG in the next few days. I decided against it since there's a loss opportunity cost while Plastiq is still earning 3x UR on the CIP, and I still have two months left to try to meet the SPG's MSR organically.

It dawns on me that I have $3k in MSR already, and I'm setting myself up for about $11k more MSRs in the next 3 months (CIC $3k, Plat $5k, and another CIC?). Maybe I need to get my wife the CIU a little later instead, since the bonus is also expected to be 50k UR and the 1.5x UR everywhere would make it easier on Player 2.

Sorry for the rant, but y'all understand.

I've read about this on this thread and just sort of overlooked it because I didn't begin to understand it and didn't feel I was ready to try.

So let me see if I have this straight. You open a banking account and charge your initial deposit on a new credit card for which you are working toward the minimum spend. Then you can use the "money" in that new bank account to pay the credit card bill when it comes due? So you're sort of shifting money around but it's never really yours? And you get a reward both for opening the bank account and for using the credit card? That's brilliant! But is funding a bank account considered a legitimate spend by the credit card companies?
I always pull the money from the new account to my hub account and pay my credit card from there. And do remember you may need to float it if something goes wrong so like with everything else if you can't afford to pay the money back without getting the cash out of the new account don't charge it.

I need some guidance on URs and Alaska. I booked a flight on Alaska for 3.5 months from now using URs, changes to the 60 day policy haven't gone into effect yet so I'm clear on that front. If the price changes and I want to cancel the ticket and re-book can I call Chase and they'll cancel it and refund the URs for no fee? Theoretically it seems like that should be possible but I got lost pretty fast in all the Chase airline specific fine print so I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with canceling AS flights booked with URs more than 24 hours after booking but before they were within the 60 day window?

I have no idea what is going on. It have checked the CIP account again and I went in under Chase.com/verify and there was nothing there. I know my Marriott showed up almost as soon as I was approved. Oh well! I’ll just keep checking.

Do you have the card already? I did this when I received the card. If you are trying to do it right after approval it might not have generated an account number yet...

Start looking at flights in the weeks before your dates open up. We’re going to Vancouver in May 2019 and I’ve been watching the flights in February and March to see what awards are available and which flights I will want to jump on when my dates open
I won’t probably book flights right when they become available because we won’t have any rewards by then.

I would really like to know this too.

Imho no, 500 points is peanuts tbh and not worth dealing with paper stmts. As bummed as I am to miss out on 500 points I wouldn't actually give up my paperless statements for the chance at $7.50 (what URs are worth to me). Also, Chase is kind enough to print your entire card number on statements- do you really want that stolen if you mail gets stolen (speaking from experience where we had our neighborhood box broken into and I'm glad this is one thing i wasn't worried about).

Thanks. You talked me out of it. LoL. I really do hate getting bills in the mail...even when there is no balance due.

You can get an idea of prices and award availability. If you see awards on the day booking opens, then little available a week or month later, you’ll be better prepared when you’re ready to go Good luck.

That makes sense. I’m still a little worried that there will be nothing available but I’ll just have to wait and see.

Went to Chase and opened a savings account - $150 bonus is mine after the 90 day waiting period.

The banker said "oh you're pre-approved for cards."

and I said "yeah probably but you won't actually give them to me."

Banker "Oh I love credit cards rewards. So many points and free trips."

Me: "Exactly! So can I get a CSR then?"

Banker: "No, if you're over 5 accounts in 2 years, it's an auto denial."

Me: "Tell me about it."

Sad trombone.

I need to go research new cards now - I think I'm going to open my creaky wallet and get a treadmill (an expensive one). So I might as well get a signup bonus too.

Pre-approvals don’t by pass 5/24?

I walked into the room when Roseanne was starting, and when the family was out to dinner DJ asked Dan if he got points for using his credit card. He didn't know anything about it but when he logged in to check he was ecstatic to find he had enough points to book a hotel for an anniversary weekend and still had enough left over for a HONEY BAKED HAM! It reminded me of some of the less than awesome signup bonuses that have been offered...my personal favorite was a 5 gallon pail from Home Depot. :rotfl2:
So...I am paperless for my Chase Cards. Should I change that in hopes of getting the offer? I hate getting the statements in the mail, but 500 points is 500 points......

I just can’t deal with all the paper.

I never get statements for cards I don't use, and I haven't used either of my SW cards since I got the bonuses a year and a half ago. So I won't know the difference either way. :)
I should say I only do this for Chase cards because I've never seen one of these offers from any other bank. I think DH got 500UR not too long ago, too.

Darn, I gotta take the kid to swim practice. This was getting so interesting!

Doctor of Credit has a good primer on bank account bonuses, and if you decide to test the waters his site is a fantastic resource to subscribe to.

DISchurners Announcement:
Please join me in welcoming @Lain as a Moderator of r/DISchurners. Now that we are over 150 members I figured it was appropriate to add a 3rd moderator.

DISchurners actually requires very little moderator work, as it is very quiet and nobody is yelling or reporting each other (haha!) but in the event that I'm distracted I like having some backup folks to help out. I also want to thank @Albort for his support since the beginning and for continuing to help where necesasry.

Primarily, the purpose of the mods will be to check and make sure support links are accurate and active. When a newbie is willing to support a DISer we want to make sure the thread has clean links :)

I'm going to go report everyone now :p

Thanks for all you guys do!

Nope. I've read that datapoint on Reddit and FlyerTalk too.

Private Client doesn't even bypass anymore apparently. The banker offered to set up a private client appointment. I was like, "I'll just stay at Fidelity."
