I love credit cards so much!

Oh crap. Unless you can still double dip like the CSR/CSP. And then there's also the business card option.

My thoughts exactly.

Starting Thursday, April 5, you’re now no longer eligible to open a Southwest consumer credit card if either of the following conditions apply:
  1. You are a current Southwest consumer credit cardholder; or
  2. You have earned a new cardmember bonus on a Southwest consumer credit card in the last 24 months.
Sounds just like the One Sapphire Rule, and a double dip gets around those restrictions.

@SouthFayetteFan isnt gonna like this news either...

its a pretty crappy week for him... haha.
My reaction on this is fairly neutral for me - very sad for others newer to the game though :(. We have such an enormous stash of SW RR points that it's not really something I'm chasing at this point (we're at about 540k at last check). We were probably going to get another biz and personal card in early 2019 and that likely won't change with this policy. Here's my overall thoughts:
  • It seems you can still get SW Biz and 1 SW personal and earn a CP so that's a good thing
  • There may still be a double dip loophole to get 2 personal (although for most the Biz/Personal is the easier option)
  • There continues to be trends with SW to make the CP just a little harder to earn.
  • For a family of 4 (such as us) who really only flies 2-3 times a year - the CP carries less value than a DINK travelling 6+ times a year. I've always felt the value of the points earned was the best part with CP just a secondary added bonus.
  • It does frustrate me that you will potentially have to cancel a Premier card to apply for a Plus or vice versa (as it will basically make it impossible to hold both cards) and I've had a fair amount of success on support links with those cards with friends, family and on r/churning.
I've really come to plan for things like this. I was playing the game when 5/24 1.0 came out and when the even worse 5/24 2.0 was released (on 5/24/16 of all days!!)...Don't let it get you down guys, this game is still freakin amazing :) :)

I just did the TCF checking bonus last month! It was sooo easy! By far the easiest bonus I’ve ever done.

If yours is the same as mine was, I didn’t have to do any direct deposit - I just had to do a single bill pay over $250. I just used it to pay one of my Chase cards, and the bonus posted the day after the payment went through.

I didn’t try to fund it with a CC as I opened in-branch (and, I’m ashamed to say, I didn’t think to ask).

Happy to answer any other questions you have about it.
It looks like it might be in branch only and they are asking for the flyer received in the mail as proof you were invited.
I’ll have to watch the mail.

This is crappy for all of us chasing the CP. I have it through the end of this year and was going to have DH open both cards to get the CP for 2019/20. I am not into getting a "business" card so I guess no more CP for us. :headache:
Obviously it's a personal decision whether or not to go for biz cards. Keep your head up though - the 50k offer is still worth ~$740 in flights (despite the recent devaluation) and if they release the 60k offer again that's worth ~$890. Both of those offers are a FANTASTIC return on a $2,000 MSR. Stay posted to see if you can double dip to earn it still too!

Yep. I may still have him go for one if the bonus is high enough. And I have other cards to go after as well if I don't have him get a SW card. I have lots of SW points and UR points (not nearly as many as you) so I guess it is all good.

If he doesn't get one or the other SW cards, it moves me a little closer to getting MY next card, so I guess it all works out. One way or another, I still won't be paying for flights or hotels ever again. As long as there is a way to earn the points, I will continue to do so. Thanks for the encouragement. :flower1:

THANKS! I used to take some of these things really hard...like depressed for a day hard. When Southwest did their BIG devaluation a few years back it was a dark day for me. Since then I've come to appreciate that our financial prowess here puts us above 99%+ of the most people. So I try to pass along that encouragement to others too :) The game is still good my friends!! Free Flights and Free Stays are still totally possible!

Yes. My first response was, "Crap!" But I will make adjustments as needed and keep playing the game.

I like to see this thread is moving quickly, was just going to post about the SW change but everyone beat me to it. I was planning to cancel my premier, and get both SW cards early next year for a CP. Hopefully, still will be able to double dip like the sapphires.

Today, I received a retention bonus from amex for my spg personal, $75 dollar statement credit for 2,000 in 3 months, and I took it. Will be interesting to see what happens later this year with the Marriott/SPG cards. I also have a Marriott card, coming up to my anniversary date soon, not sure if that will be a keeper yet, given the category restriction on the free night certificate not sure how easy it will be for me to use it.

I'm looking for a stay in mid-June for Disney World, was hoping to stay at the Swan/Dolphin but I'm about 14,000 points shy of the points I need. I called and asked about a points/cash reservation, the agent got my hopes up when she initially said $110 a night and 18,000 points for the three nights, when she was confirming my dates she was actually looking in April and there was no cash/points reservations for June, so probably going to try and call back. I have enough UR points to book a disney moderate resort for the nights, but I think I would rather be staying at Swan/Dolphin.

I'm not really surprised, I always wondered why the allowed it to begin with. I'm actually a little amazed it took this long for them to implement it. But if we actually flew somewhere on a regular basis I'd have jumped on it and rode it until they caught on too :)

:\
could Ink/Freedom be next!?

I recently booked 6 nights at the Swan on points. SPG member rate worked out to about $2700 so a nice return of 4.5c per SPG point.

Anyway, wanted to let you know to keep checking as while I was waiting to accumulate the right needed points, availability would change almost daily sometimes. At one point I had to make two separate bookings, but was fortunately able to combine them onto one booking just a few days later. Can't say I recall seeing Cash + points show up at any time though.

Perish the thought!

I'm no expert, obviously, but I'm inclined to think not... at least for now. Both product lines offer fairly different products, with no fee and fee options, whereas SW was essentially the same product with minor differences. Kinda the same with Sapphire, as I'm sure Chase either designed it that way (CSP being the gateway to CSR) or realized after so many PCs that most people wouldn't need/want both but are very willing to open both for the bonus :)

They did this because of Hawaii, didn't they? #Sucks

my bet is hawaii would start next year when all the Californian CP expire...

edit: with all the bad news with SW, i guess the winning percentage went up lol
