Lain mentioned that, at least for the Green, turning off the Pay Over Time (POT), which makes a charge card act like a credit card, opens up a credit card slot. See his post here, and elaboration a few posts later.

Thanks.

Just to add to this, you can turn off POT in the Amex app by logging in, selecting your Green card, click Statements on the bottom menu, scroll down to and click Pay Over Time, toggle the switch to turn off POT.

Question on the AmEx Plat Airline credit. I changed my airline of choice to Southwest. The flight I am going to book is $109. It's my understanding that if the charge is less than $100 the credit will apply. Is there anywhere to buy a gift card for less than $25. That's all I'm finding online. If I could find a $10 or $15 card, that would work out perfectly (I think).

Gift cards no longer work but you could find a cheaper flight and then cancel it and get the credit and use that to book the flight you want (or just modify the cheaper flight and pay the difference). I typically wait 24 hours when it will automatically refund as a credit, but I have heard if you cancel within 24 hours you will have a choice of credit or refund and would just need to choose to get a credit.

Thanks - that makes sense. I was originally thinking of buying a $10ish dollar gift card and using that toward the $109 flight and paying the difference with the AmEx card to get the credit. Your way will probably be easier (especially since I can't find a gift card less than $25). Thanks again!

When we went to Maui a couple of years ago, Amex PLat Concierge was also unable to secure reservations at Mama's Fish House. I hung up and called the Visa Infinite Concierge line for the Chase Sapphire Reserve (also available if you have a Ritz Carlton card). They were able to get me reservations. Not sure if you have a CSR but thought this might help.
Another vote for the Visa Infinite Concierge here! Don’t remember where I was going in NOLA trying for a last minute res but I do remember Amex couldn’t secure one but Visa Infinite Concierge team was able to.

Altitude Reserve also gets access if you don’t have a CSR.

Thanks for the suggestions- I do have a CSR. Concierge was thorough- but ultimately, no luck. Mama’s did advise them to let me know to install the OpenTable app, where you can set alerts.

I wasn’t aware of that so I gave that a try too.

As always, thanks for the great suggestions.

Wednesday I stayed overnight in a hotel that I booked with my Flex through the Chase Portal. On the points earning summary it says on "Chase Travel-1x" and it says "Travel booked through Chase- 0 pts" in two separate transactions. Isn't it 5x back on travel booked through the Chase portal using the Flex? I'm confused.

How many people are going to a gym while a pandemic is ongoing?

We live across the street from an Orange Theory - another one of those upscale boutique gyms - and you'd be surprised.

Finding your first statement closing date is easy via the app - you can actually see it immediately after approval even.

Login to the app and select the card you want to see - scroll down and click here:

Then on the next page you'll see your closing date:

Ok thank you for this! I found it. I'm going to ask another very basic question that's only because it's been so long since I've paid this close attention to a Chase SUB. The statements close on the 26th and the 28th for the CSP/CSR, respectively. How long after statement close does the SUB post? Again, I want to ensure I can redeem for PYB groceries before it goes away on 4/30.

I am thinking the card with the statement date of the 26th will be fine if I don't meet MSR until 4/26, but the 28th I want to make sure I've got that one done in March.

They post with statement close. So you should see them on 26th and 28th.

I still think the Equinox credit is lame.

Yeah, I will also say the gyms where I am are very busy. I had to join the Y when my stairmaster died and there is a large crowd every day. No mask on cardio equipment but otherwise you have to wear a mask. Every other machine is unplugged. My brother works in a Y in New Jersey and since they reopened in July they have been busy too.

I still think the Equinox credit is unbelievable lame. My dad has had a Platinum Card since the 80s. He uses none of the benefits. Honestly the annual fee won't make a difference to him and this may be his only card with an annual fee. But I'll try to talk him into downgrading to gold. Then again, he still pays for AOL so maybe I shouldn't bother.

Hi! public opinion poll: i have AmEx Blue Cash Preferred that I normally use for groceries. Just received AmEx Gold, should I switch to that? Having a hard time comparing since one is cash back and one is MR. Thanks

When I had Gold I downgraded my BCP to BCE (no fee). When I got rid of Gold I waited for an offer and upgraded back to BCP. I've been cashing out MRs so the grocery store "cash back" on Gold is 5% for me. So not worth paying the extra annual fee for BCP to get an additional percentage point on $6k of spend.

Hi again! It’s the annoying Marriott noob here to ask 2 more questions.

1) If DH hits his 50 nights in April, thus achieving Platinum status, when will that status begin and end? I *thought* it would be effective fairly immediately and end in December of 2022. Therefore, we could get 5 Suite Night Awards this year and next year again. Am I right?

2) the method that @Lain linked me to for booking a hotel stay that was 1 night cash and 2 free nights wouldn’t work for the particular stay I booked. I even spent a frustratingly long amount of time on the phone with a Bonvoy rep who also couldn’t figure it out. So we had to book as 2 separate consecutive reservations. Called the hotel directly and they assured us that we wouldn’t have to switch rooms. But do you think we will no longer qualify for the “double the nights” promotion? We are staying 3 consecutive nights at the same hotel, all under DH name. Just two different reservation numbers.

My apologies for bothering you all with more questions! Thank you for all the help you’ve given so far!

DS22 and his girlfriend are planning a trip to California in May after his college graduation. She used to live there so most of the trip staying with her sister of friends. They need 4 nights total for hotels. I have 3 Marriott free night certificates. Can they use them without me being there.

Looks like I need to start planning my backup vacation to wdw now that it's for sure Japan isn't letting people in for the games. The paralympics end Sept 5 and I'm supposed to arrive the 3rd. I won't unravel any of it until July or Aug. But I think I need to get my stuff booked so I know I can go to wdw.

I really hope the rumor about the AF hike in the personal platinum is wrong. Those sound like horrible "benefits" to me. DH will definitely be product changing his card if those come into effect. Frankly, IMO the best thing they could do would be make those travel credits easier to use. I wish they would just do what Chase does. I may try to apply (I have business plat), but I think I'm out of luck because I had the personal platinum years ago.
