Anyone bought Sea World tickets from UR's? I bought 2-park tickets to be used at SW and Busch Gardens. The tickets are very unclear how they work but I saw you had 14 days to use so I put in the day we land in FL. We hadn't planned out our days at all and thought that was safe. After purchase, the email says our "tour date" is Jan 6, which is the date we land and the date I put in. We called Chase UR's several days ago. Rep says she doesn't understand the tickets either. She put us on hold to call SW. Apparently tried several times and phone rings and rings and then hangs up. So, she sent an email to their support team and they said allow 5 biz days to hear back. We fly out on Jan 6 and with the all the holidays, we are bumping up on 5 days when we fly out. I have no idea what to do or how these vouchers work. Any ideas?

Also, let's do a role call!! 😂 😂 If you're a regular, chime in and say something when you find us here. We don't want to lose anybody!!

Happy New Year everyone! My wife just got an AmEx Schwab Platinum - 🎶🎶 I've got a feeling twenty-one is going to be a good year! 🎶🎶

(And here's hoping the new $30/month PayPal credit is also offered for the Schwab and other flavors of AmEx personal platinum.)

CONGRATS!! Were you previously facing a pop-up on this or was this her first attempt?

We went to Busch Gardens Tampa a few weeks ago and since they're the same company maybe their tickets are handled in a similar way. Right now you have to have a reservation for the day you plan to go. Is there a reservation number, order number, barcode number, or anything like that on the voucher? If there is, try going to the Sea World Orlando reservation page and using that number to make a reservation. We had vouchers from Busch Gardens (not from UR) and that's how they worked for us.

Thanks. We do have voucher numbers from UR's. We've bought 2-day tix but been able to make 3-day park reservations. We did this as an experiment to see if the system was actually checking for valid park tix. Appears it does not according to that.

Any thoughts on best airline/route from Pittsburgh to Hawaii? Ideally we'd fly into Maui. We can do SW but wow we would have a lot of stops! I've searched all the major airlines and it doesn't seem like there's an easy way to get there from PA, so looking for ideas on what others have done. Would love to plan a trip for Aug if DS's internship is over in time for us to squeeze in a trip before he and DD start their fall semesters. I've already booked GW for a week with Hilton 5th night free and 2 FNC in hopes that it works out.

I apologize I'm just getting to this now but I felt this post warranted an update since the dates, offers, etc. were all outdated and I want to add up to date content in the new "Advanced Strategies" thread when I do a refresh. Also, with just 5 weeks left on the elevated offers, this might be of importance as some people consider their next card.

An UPDATED Fireside Chat with SouthFayetteFan on the Southwest Companion Pass

If you've been in this game for even a short time, you've probably heard by now that one of the best benefits in all of churning is the Southwest "SW" Companion Pass "CP" (for those who looking to travel domestically or other nearby destinations that live near an airport serviced by Southwest). I plan to share some comments here on the "DOs and DON'Ts of the CP.

BEFORE I START – A QUICK DISCLAIMER: If you have questions about the SW CP – please share them either here or on DISchurners. Don’t call Chase, Don’t call Southwest, Don’t ask on random blogs. There is a lot of bad advice and misunderstanding that goes around with this one so come to the EXPERTS for help!

What is it the Southwest Companion Pass and how do I earn it? Let’s start with a simple explanation on how this all works…

Paraphrased from the Southwest Website:
  • CP allows you to choose one person to fly with you, free of charge (except for the $5.60 fee) every time you purchase or redeem points for a flight.
  • You qualify by either (a) fly 100 qualifying one-way flights or (b) earn 125,000 qualifying points in a calendar year
  • Once you qualify for the CP, you will have it for the remainder of that calendar year and ALL of the following calendar year.
  • Keep in mind that the value of the CP is both nothing and infinite… “Huh??” … What I mean is that if you never use it, it will be worth nothing to you. And if you used it every day it would have an insane value. It’s hard to put a number on it, but if you aren’t planning to fly Southwest multiple times while holding your CP, it’s possible that it’s not even a good strategy for you. It only saves you money (or points) if you use it!
For purposes of this write-up we will solely be focusing on the 125,000 points option. If you’re flying 100 one-way flights a year already then you don’t need my help here, haha!
  • Not ALL points earned will qualify. Of note, transfers from Ultimate rewards DO NOT qualify. Also, transfers from hotel programs such as Marriott or Choice DO NOT qualify. You cannot earn a CP from transferring points so don’t try it. If you see an article that recommends this it’s either OLD or you should never trust that source again! For more details on what does or does not qualify see this page on the Southwest website.
  • Points that do qualify include points from flying, SW shopping portal, certain partners like rental cars, and of course the CHASE CREDIT CARDS!
  • So the easy answer to qualifying for the CP is to earn 125k SW points from their Chase credit card lineup.
When is the best time to earn the CP? What can go wrong???

This is always a big focus in the fall and winter because of what was said before: Once you qualify for the CP, you will have it for the remainder of that calendar year and ALL of the following calendar year. Because of this, people attempt to earn the CP as early in the year as possible. You can have your CP for as little as 13 months and as much as 23 months. Of course 23 is > 13 so most people want that.
  • It’s important to note that your CP is only good if you plan to use it. If you DO NOT have any flights planned until April of the next year, earning it in January or February isn’t necessary. It’s crazy but every year I encounter people trying to earn the CP as quick as possible who don’t even have a flight to use it until June (so don't stress out too much!).
  • It is VERY difficult to earn the CP to cover a flight in January. You can try for this but it might be stressful and/or not work out so don’t set yourself up for disappointment.
  • So if you’re trying to earn the CP early in the year you’ll end up applying for cards late in the prior year or early in January. It is perfectly ok to apply prior to the end of the year, BUT you must understand all the potential pitfalls.
  • There are some good (but old) writeups on r/churning that address these potential pitfalls here and here. Some of the info in there isn’t 100% accurate but the examples of what can go wrong are spot on. I’d focus on those! Things can and will go wrong if you don't understand how this works...and we CANNOT help you fix it if your points post at the wrong time!!
  • Most notably in that write-up it cites that you have 115 days to meet the MSR. That might be outdated info now and it seems Chase only gives 3 months from approval now. Do not mess up your CP strategy by counting on 115 days!!
  • Remember, you CANNOT have your bonus post in 20220 and have it count towards a 2021 CP – do not mess this up. For most people it’s easiest to just wait and meet the MSR on Jan 1 to avoid any stress around this issue. (This comment may not be applicable based on when you're reading this, but leaving it here for future reference).
Specifically how should I go about earning my CP???

There’s basically 3 strategies here which may or may not get you all 125k points - So make sure you do your math based on the current offers available:
  1. TWO Southwest Business Cards
  2. TWO Southwest Personal Cards which must be done via a MDD
  3. ONE Southwest Business Card and ONE Southwest Personal Card
I note that 2 personals must be done via MDD. That’s because Chase added a “One Southwest Personal Card Rule” in April of 2018 which states: This product is not available to either (i) current Cardmembers of any Southwest Rapids Rewards® Credit Card, or (ii) previous Cardmembers of any Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card who received a new Cardmember bonus within the last 24 months. This does not apply to Cardmembers of the Southwest Rapid Rewards Business Card and Employee Credit Card products.

Here are my two top strategies for pursuing the CP in 2021.
  • 2 Business Cards. The reason for this is because there currently is NOT a “One Southwest Business Card Rule” BUT they could add that at any time. And if you get both business cards now, it would leave both SW personal cards (via a MDD) as a future strategy for a CP down the line. We don’t know what the future holds but 24+ months is a long time and a lot can change. For those that like the CP, you know that it’s best to try to earn it every 2 years. Doing 2 business cards now will likely leave you with the most flexibility in the future. It's also worth noting that some people struggle to get biz cards, so there is some risk here.
If you are doing the 2 biz cards path, your problem is that they will need to be spread out. We typically advise spacing out biz apps by 3 months but in this instance 2 is probably fine if your pacing has been good up to this point. Feel free to ask any questions about the exact card timing and plan here or on the DIS.
  • 2 Chase Personal Cards via a MDD. When the Chase personal cards are showing elevated offers this can be a great path to the SW CP as well. Remember, this must be done via a MDD due to the aforementioned "One Southwest Personal Card Rule". If you are unsure of how to do a MDD consult DISchurners OR ask for help! This is a more attractive option than one biz and one personal because it ALSO leaves you with more flexibility down the line.
What credit card offers are out there???

Currently there are a ton of great offers out there on the Chase Southwest credit card lineup with a stated "apply by 2/8/2021" showing on the support links.

Here is a quick recap:

1) Chase Southwest Personal Cards; 3 options - Plus, Premier, Priority: Offer details = Earn up to 80,000 SW RR points. Earn 50,000 points after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months PLUS, earn an additional 30,000 points after you spend $10,000 total in the first 9 months. This is an ALL-TIME HIGH offer on these cards.
2) Chase Southwest PERFORMANCE Business Card - Earn up to 100,000 SW RR points. Earn 70,000 points after spending $5,000 in the first 3 months PLUS, earn an additional 30,000 points after you spend $25,000 total in the first 6 months.
3) Chase Southwest PREMIER Business Card - Earn 60,000 points after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months.

IF using a support link, make sure to hit APPLY on the correct card.

Also worth noting, each of these offers shows an additional kicker: PLUS earn 5 points per $1 spent on up to $2,000 per month in Southwest purchases between in Jan/Feb/Mar.

Am I eligible for the sign-up bonus???

Do not lose track of the eligibility requirements on all of the SW cards! If you earned a bonus on a SW card in the past 24 months then you are not eligible for certain cards. I always base the 24 months on the DATE that the points POSTED into your SW RR account - that is the date that matters, not when you applied, and not when you met your MSR! Here are some more specific restrictions:
  • IF you earned a signup bonus on ANY SW PERSONAL CARD in the past 24 months then you ARE NOT eligible for a bonus on ANY SW Personal Card (not just the card you signed up for, but ALL SW personal cards).
  • IF you earned a signup bonus on A SW PREMIER BIZ CARD in the past 24 months then you ARE NOT eligible for a bonus on the SW Premier Biz Card (but you could get a SW Performance Biz).
  • IF you earned a signup bonus on A SW PERFORMANCE BIZ CARD in the past 24 months then you ARE NOT eligible for a bonus on the SW Performance Biz Card (but you could get a SW Premier Biz).
In all of these scenarios, once the 24 months have passed since you earned your bonus, then you are eligible again for the cards under that scenario.

And since it will be relevant to my last post - I'll share this again as well:

An UPDATED @SouthFayetteFan mini-fireside chat: Why am I advocating for 2 business or 2 personal SW cards but NOT as keen on 1 of each:

You've seen me mention numerous times about recommending either 2 business cards (spaced out appropriately) or 2 personal cards (via MDD) as your best SW CP strategy. Why do I keep saying that? Well to examine this let's first assess the current restrictions on each card:
So currently the "ONE SOUTHWEST PERSONAL" rule prevents you from earning the bonus on more than one SW personal card except for the MDD loophole. (side note, the 2/30 chase application rule prevents from you from triple dipping these cards so don't even try that IMO). Also of note, the 24 months is measured from when you were awarded the bonus, NOT when you applied and NOT when you met the MSR. Once you pull the trigger on one of these cards you are likely under those restrictions for the next 25-27 months!!

There is no guaranty that Chase won't change these rules in the future - potential changes could include:
  • A "ONE SOUTHWEST BUSINESS" rule similar to the personal cards.
  • A change in the 24 month restriction to 48 months (this could occur on personal cards, business cards, or all cards).
  • MDD could die
  • Something else we haven't even dreamt of yet!
So why 2 personals or 2 business but not one of each... Flexibility my friend...it's ALL about future flexibility...

Scenario 1:
You sign up for 2 personal cards via MDD
- You earn a crap-ton of points now but can't get another personal card until sometime in mid 2023.
- In the future you still could sign up for BOTH business cards to get another CP (i.e. in 2022 or 2023). IF Chase enacts a ONE SW BIZ rule you can still sign up for one business card.
- If Chase enacts a 48 month rule, at least you maximized your opportunity today (and you aren't locked out of biz cards)

Scenario 2: You sign up for 2 business cards
- You earn a lot of points now but can't get either business card again until sometime in mid 2023
- In the future you still could sign up for a personal SW card or even earn another CP via MDD (i.e. in 2022 or 2023).
- If Chase enacts a ONE SW BIZ rule you don't care, you already earned both bonuses!
- If Chase enacts a 48 month rule, you haven't gotten any personal cards so you're still in business there!

Scenario 3: You sign up for 1 personal and 1 biz card. NOTICE THE FLEXIBILITY RESTRICTIONS:
- Congrats you are able to earn a CP!
- You can't earn another CP until later in 2023 because you are locked out of 1 biz card and all personal cards until 25-27 months from their initial applications
- You can't get another personal card period to pad your SW balance
- You could get the other business card (for now)
- IF Chase enacts a ONE SW BIZ rule you are now out of that card until mid 2023.
- IF Chase enacts a 48 month rule you are now out on personal cards until mid 2025
- IF Chase enacts both rules you aren't earning any more SW bonuses until mid 2025

This may seem a bit doomsday but nobody saw one Sapphire coming until it hit. Nobody saw one SW personal until it hit. Nobody saw 48 mo. restriction on Sapphire until it hit. These are the types of scenarios I plan for...I try to think 10 steps and 2 years ahead when I chart my strategy. Anytime you have an opportunity leave yourself greater flexibility down the line, I say do it! Not everybody will have that flexibility now due to previous SW cards, BUT if you do, please consider this before you apply.

...boy this doesn't seem like a "mini" fireside chat after all, haha!

EDIT: Both of these comments will be featured in the new Advanced Strategies thread on DISchurners when I do the refresh here in the coming days.

I’ve been mostly a lurker on this thread for 2 yrs now. As a family of 6, we’ve taken some amazing and pretty expensive trips (nothing international but wonderful non the less). After 2020 though, I was kind of bitter and haven’t done much besides charge everything to Chase Freedom and let the points accumulate on my CSR.

Planned for 2020:
-March 3 days Miami, FL to Key West and back before 7 day Royal Caribbean cruise. URs covered $4k of cruise...all a miami and KW hotels on points...cruise cancelled 14 hrs before boarding. Spent $5k out of pocket on a last minute cancellation in Siesta Key and rented a Suburban to drive home to Ohio. Took 6 months to get refunded URs and $$ and STILL dealing with $1,000 flight credit :/
-July 16 day round trip flying into vegas and doing a big loop from Grand Canyon to Yellowstone and back (cancelled) - instead did 3 nights in Gatlinburg and 7 nights in St Pete (did not enjoy!)
-November - 15 yr anniversary trip to Grand Cayman (cancelled)

2021 planned:
*found out in July we are pregnant with #5...between this and having two teens now, traveling is becoming a tad harder
March 2021 - Siesta Key (cancelled as I’m due with baby 3/16)
July - 1 month road trip from
Ohio to My Rushmore to Yellowstone thru Utah and Colorado and back (combo of camper and free hotel stays)
Nov - ????

I think our bitterness has finally started the wear off (although getting SW CP in Mar 2020 still hurts) and we’re ready to get back into the game. Likely we’ll need to start with lowering CC limits, cancelling a few cards and then when the time comes applying again...

We also have no rental property remodels on the horizon so we may try Amazon FBA as a way to reach some of the Chase Biz MS requirements. DH had just gotten back into 4/24 zone in Apr 2020.
Congrats!

Hi all , new to this thread and would love your input.
My Goal is mainly to earn cash back (to use for Disney Trips, DVC Dues and general travel) I'm open to suggestions and variations.

Cards In the past 24 Months:
May 2020 – CHASE VISA MARRIOT BONVOY (pandemic impulse to earn miles)

AUG 2019 – COMENITY BANK EXPRESS retail card (don’t need this card, should I close?)

May 2018 – SYW MC SHOP YOUR WAY SEARS MC (don’t need this card, should I close?)

May 2018 – SYNCB LOWES retail card (used for remodeling in 2018)

Would like to Earn Cash Back (open to other options)

Spending (I charge everything):

  • What amount of spend would you put on a card monthly? groceries, gas, insurance, cable, cell phone, utilities, restaurants (pre-covid), travel, property taxes, home insurance, subscriptions (Netflix, Disney+), sons school, pretty much everything
  • Do you currently payoff your CCs in full every month or do you carry any balances/pay any interest? YES
  • What airport(s) do you typically fly out of? Miami International Airport
  • Do you have a preference of Frequent Flyer program? American Airlines
  • Does SOUTHWEST Airline service your airport? No
  • Do you have a Hotel Rewards program preference? MARRIOT (31,481 points)
  • Do you currently have travel points or miles in any program? American Airlines 181,257 miles/points, Delta 30k and spirit 35k that I will probably lose this year when I cancel card.
  • What are your specific goals for churning credit cards? Cash back for Disney Trips & DVC Dues. Currently earning AA miles for trip to Europe in 2022-23 (Yes, will squeeze in Disney Paris)
  • When do you plan to take these trips?

  1. Feb 2021 – Berkshires for 5 days. Have not booked flight yet and can either fly AA or Spirit.
  2. May 2021 - Disney Copper Creek
  3. August 2021 Disney (lodging TBD)
  4. November 2021 Royal Caribbean 7 day Cruise (deposits only, rolled over from 2020 postponed trip)
  5. December 2021 TBD

  • Who does your travel party consist of? Spouse & 4 year old son.
  • Most trips just the three of us and Once a year with friends and twice a year with in-laws.

Consider the DiscoverIT card if your main goal is cash back. It gives 5% rotatiting categories (Q1 is grocery, walgreens and CVS). BUT - for the first year they DOUBLE the cash back. So you can get 10% on the rotating categories and 2% on everything else.

Thanks for @afan for posting about the Amex PayPal credit!

I was just about to use PayPal to renew my membership I use to earn my CE credits at work. It’s nice to get $30 off the $125 it cost.

My DD also decided she would really like a Kristoff doll for her bday in a few months. I can only find them on Ebay so I will get that next month.

Happy 2021! Ahh new thread smell!

So at the beginning of December I was officially laid off from Disney. I have started up my own design business with my former coworker and our LLC went into affect yesterday. I have our EIN and am trying to get us a business card. We have already paid for the biggest upfront costs over the past few months as the design software we need went on sale during the holidays so we won't really be charging big numbers. I want to legitimately use the card to keep business expenses separate. I decided to apply for the jetBlue business card since it only had 1k MSR, but was denied for too much credit (I have 2 jetblue personal cards and my business partner has one) so then I tried for an Amex BCP and got my first pop up! Then I thought I would have DH support us to a CIC and at least get his support points, but can't generate a link!

Any suggestions? Also any recommendations for a good business bank account?

And if anyone knows of anyone needing some theme design work done, let me know!

I’m sorry you were laid off 😕

What are you hoping for? There’s a ton of great offers out there now, right?
SFF..... I just don't see one that calls to me right now (pretty sure amex is out for me) not flying anywhere/have a ton of SW points still, I have been looking around for weeks now with no clear inspiration for my path...(P2 has a set path, starting mid January) and I'm feeling kind of frustrated that I can't settle on a decent offer I can use to pay some bills coming up...

Good luck with your new business. CIU or CIC would be worth getting as long as you meet the spend.
