OK, looking for advice. How can I optimize points for family trips (6 people) to Israel, Kenya African Safari, Australia, New Zealand, and SE Asia?

I fly out of SLC, but can get cheap/easy positioning flights to LAX and other western airports. Historically, flights from LAX to Australia, New Zealand, and SE Asia have gone on sale for as little as $300-$400/person in economy, so I feel like points transfers are difficult to justify. Also, with 6 people, using hotels internationally doesn't usually make sense because we need 2-3 rooms, so the points requirements gets really high when we can get an airbnb for pretty cheap, often with laundry. I want to use points, but beyond domestic destinations, I have not found a good way to use them for such a large family. I don't really understand AMEX MR and the cards with the most points usually require pretty high spend. However, I think it would be good to diversify beyond Chase. I have yet to MS beyond buying a few Visa gift cards at my local Krogers when on sale to top off spend when we had 2 cards that needed spend. I just used the Visa gift cards directly.

I feel like I could do way better at the points game, but just need some direction. Can you help?

We have a very old Bank of America CC, and we each did a previous round of SWA CC for the companion pass about 6 years back. Other than that, these are all our credit cards. We both have credit scores over 800 points and do not need a mortgage or other loan any time soon. We pay in full every month. We both have side businesses, so we can get business cards.

Airports: SLC, LAS, cheap, easy position flights to LAX or SFO, or others on west coast.

I have a family of 6- Me, DH, DS-11, DS-9, DS-5, DS-3

Yes, I am Chase heavy, mostly because we used to live far from family and used the SWA companion pass and points to visit family across the country about 5-6 times a year. Now we live close to my husband's family. My family used to live within a day's drive, but they have since dispersed all over. I have decided to meet family for destination get togethers rather than just visiting a single person, since we all live so far away.

When we moved to UT, I found that while we had plenty of flight points via SWA, we were spending a bunch on hotels, so I got the Hyatt and IHG cards to get points and 4 annual nights annually. We got the Chase Ink Business because my brother was supposed to have his wedding in the Philippines this year, and I was saving up flexible points/ready to pay at 1.25/pt for a good airfare deal. That didn't pan out, of course, but I got the Chase Sapphire Preferred because we are remodeling our master bedroom & bath and wanted to put big spend items towards a new bonus. I plan to refer my husband next, so he can get the points as well.

However, I am not sure what to do going forward. We adopted 3 more children 3 years ago, so now we are a family of 6. Should I go crazy racking up as many points as possible and try for business class for everyone, or should I just be happy with economy class? We take up 6 seats, so usually 2 rows, which is a sort of poor man's business class of its own. Someone usually ends up on the floor during a long haul, and 2 people usually share 3 seats. It's not bad, but I still don't sleep!

Dream destinations: Israel, Kenya, New Zealand, Australia, and SE Asia - mostly Siem Reap, Myanmar, and Bangkok

Recent travel history, so you can see how I've used points in the past:
2019
Nov - (all 6) Kobe, Japan - visiting DH's parents for Thanksgiving using cash (forgot that I could have used UR points plus cash to buy them)
Oct - (all 6) San Diego Kids Free October for San Diego Zoo, Kids' Fall Break driving & using free night certificates from Hyatt CC
Sept - (DH & Me) China w/ DH on business - flat fee reimbursement paid for both our flights & my mom's to come watch our kids
July/Aug - (all 6) 5 week drive across the country to sightsee & visit family in MO & NH. Used Hyatt points to pay for Hyatt Places along the way using Hyatt/transferring UR points & stayed w/ family & friends
July - (DH & Me) visited my brother in Puerto Rico while my mom watched our boys at her house in the middle of our road trip. Cash Jetblue flight
Jan - (all 6) weekend night warm getaway in Hyatt Place Las Vegas to swim & eat at kids eat free buffet using Hyatt points.

2018
Nov - (all 6) Orlando, FL for Universal Studios - used SWA points for flights, parents paid for $150/nt 6 bedroom house w/ pool.
May - (all 6) Oahu, HI using flight credit from DH getting bumped & staying w/ friends
Feb-Apr - (DH & Me) Several day trips or overnight trips to LA using SWA companion pass & points, and occasional Hyatt points to do dumpling crawls
Jan - (DH & Me) Cancun, Mexico to use 4 free nights w/ Hyatt CC signups at the Hyatt Zilara All Inclusive, SWA points & companion pass to get there

For those heading to WDW after me:
When going through the queue sometimes it looks like a distance marker is missing, but it isn't. Some are spaced really far apart, especially when the queue wraps, in order to distance you not only from those ahead of you, but those next to you as well. So many people were not paying attention today. I just held by family back, I'm sure some behind me grumbled that we weren't moving, but I didn't care.

It is hot. Get some disposable medical masks as back up. I haven't used one yet, I'm using my cloth ones, but I should have switched today. I got them for my sensitive boy who would only wear a gaitor, he's not liked any other mask until I bought the medical ones. DH has been using cloth, but switched to the disposable one halfway through today.

Security will keep you on your toes. MK day 1- remove all electronics and metal items from bag. MK day 2- remove all metal items from bag. AK day 1- remove nothing from you bag. I was trying to pre-prepare by keeping electronics/metal in a gallon zip back for easy removal.

So far we have not had one single dining order come out correctly, something has always needed redone. :confused3 Patience, they are trying.

Coming to the realization that Paris probably isn't happening for my 40th birthday next year. So it's time to change gears to a family road trip. The wife and I are starting to plan taking our two sons to Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills as soon as school gets out next year. Our boys will be 8 and 5. Looking for any suggestions on where to stay and what to do with our time there. Tentative plan would be to get into Rapid City on a Sunday afternoon and leave the following Saturday morning.

We did this trip a few years ago and stayed in Box Elder, SD. Its a few miles outside Rapid City but they are all newer hotels and there is a target and chain restaurants nearby. There is a cool playgroud in Rapid City, i think its Storybook land and its kitchy and cool and a greatplace to get some energy out. We also used Box Elder as a home base to go to Bandlands NP and a stop at Wall Drug. Beautiful country!

We stayed in Hill City when we did this trip. Not too touristy but easy to get to all the attractions.

Some of the attractions we did - Badlands NP (about a hour from Rapid City), Wall Drug (near Badlands), Devils Tower (1.5 hours from Rapid City), Spearfish Canyon (on the way to Devil's Tower), DC Booth Fish Hatchery (Spearfish), Sylvan Lake, Custer State Park (lots of Bison, prairie dogs, pronghorn, burros), 1880 train (Keystone), Wind Cave and Jewel Cave, Journey Museum (Rapid City), Mt Rushmore, Iron Mountain Road leading to Mt Rushmore (frames Mt Rushmore in the tunnels), Needles Highway.

Plenty to do and see. Have a great time!

3 unexpected things I have learned from this awesome group of people

1) Gift cards are hugely valuable and not as gifts
2) Twitter DM’s for cancellations etc, who knew 🤷🏼‍♀️
3) Amazing travel destinations that aren’t Disney

That’s honestly only the tip of the iceberg of knowledge I’ve gained since following along here, but thought I’d share the ones that have helped me most recently 😊
I have definitely picked up a lot of wishlist destinations & just overall good travel tips from this thread.

Since we can't plan any big summer travel, we are going here: https://www.pica-resort.jp/hatsushima/about/ It's basically an island that exists for people to feel like they went somewhere. Swimming, hot springs, barbecue that you cook yourself, all that kind of stuff. "Glamping" would be the term, I guess, since you stay in villas. We've never been before. It's really not our usual thing but it should be fun. DH is excited for the barbecue.

We'll probably go to an after-hours event at DisneySea in October. If you think what's going on with WDW/DL APs is a mess, I can make you feel really good about your situation.
  • Tokyo APs are currently invalid for admission
  • If you are an AP holder & want to go, you have to enter a lottery (we haven't tried yet... not dying to go back with everybody & his brother, in mid-summer)
  • The odds are never in your favor
  • Refunds/extensions will probably happen at some point but nothing yet
  • The site crashed for nearly 24 hours when single day tickets first went back on sale (WDW IT must be jealous; they aspire to this level of chaos & surely admire it in others)
  • All special events (Halloween, Christmas, etc) are cancelled until March 2021
I miss WDW so much. I hope things are okay by December of next year.

Thought about renting out our unused DVC points but decided to bank them instead. So many people seem to have gotten burned on both sides & I don't want to leave a renter holding the bag, nor do I particularly want to hold it myself.

We are doing this trip in 7 weeks in place of our Hawaii trip. We are renting an RV and staying at a campground in Custer.

This looks fantastic! I’d be thrilled to go there. If anything after COVID (there will be an end, right 🙁) I will not take the ability to travel for granted. This situation has given me a new perspective on how fortunate my family has been to travel the places we have. Right now I’m planning a simple weekend trip to San Diego, and it honestly feels “risky” in the sense of possible changes or restrictions due to the virus. I never thought what was once a “hey lets get in the car and go to San Diego for the weekend” trip would turn into a “I hope us Arizonians are allowed into California” 😦

We did it in 1979. I can remember pulling over on the side of the road for something and realizing that there were prairie dogs popping up all over. Mount Rushmore was awesome! Obviously I have no up to date information, but it was a road trip worth taking.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited! I haven't done camping since Girl Scouts.

I will absolutely never again take for granted: 1) relatively easy & pain-free entry to many countries; 2) how fortunate we are to be able to travel as much as we do; 3) the comfort of not wearing a mask; and 4) being able to touch & hug people without worrying one of us is going to infect the other. It's going to be a different world, but there will be an end. There has to be.

CIP Bonus is pending!! This was on my CIP that I got before 4/1 so had an extension for 3 extra months to make MSR. I was worried I would have to remind them when I hit the MSR but I met it over the weekend and see it says it will be posted next statement. Yeah!

So exciting! I got excited for a second because I thought you meant support bonus until I read more and say it was from meeting msr. I've come to realize but not fully accept not getting my last cip support, but acceptance is the last step right, so I'm almost there!

You have some amazing travel aspirations. I’m not going to begin to try to weigh in here in detail as int’l is not my specialty. With options to earn URs somewhat limited now, I’d say you are going to want to look at Amex MRs maybe but I’m not the right person to tell you how to use them.

URs can be redeemed at the 1.25x rate with CSP for groceries, dining, and home improvement now through 9/30/20. Not as fun as redeeming for travel, but more flexible than the portal.

MRs can be transferred to airline and hotel partners, similar to UR. But 6 in business is going to be hard (near impossible?). MRs can also be cashed out at 1.25 cents per point with a Schwab brokerage account and Schwab Platinum card. There's an account opening bonus for the brokerage via support of $100 with minimum $1000 deposit. You can get a Schwab checking at the same time, which is handy to have for international travel since they reimburse all ATM fees. If it matters to you, they do a hard pull.

If you've never had any Amex cards, you may be able to pull up the elusive 100k offer for the regular Amex Platinum. If you decide to get started with Amex cards, you'll want to keep spending on those cards even after meeting spend or you may get the dreaded pop-up when you apply for another card.

I’m in that boat as well. I should have 200k points from P1 and P2 with cross support but am settling for 180k. DH’s CIP was approved 4/1. No extension for that MSR and no support points.

Which gives me even less hope since mine is from mid April. I just don't get why they decided without saying anything that links that clearly worked since people got approved and have met subs now don't get the support points. It's such an amex thing for chase to have done.

No offense but yes, you should quarantine the whole family. We are pretty much quarantined most of the time. We lifted it a bit because DH and DS don't go anywhere but I go to work 2 weeks each month and COVID cases were declining. The hospital I work at still has low levels although cases are increasing again in our state. Plus since we are phase 4, DSs soccer team is practicing and scrimmaging (no opposing teams, I won't let him go if they do) so basically we are at higher risk for picking up the virus and now family is off limits, at least until DS is done with soccer (and I wait until the end of my 2 weeks home). I have had a negative COVID test and was also tested for antibodies, of which I have none, so I guess the masks and obsessive hand washing have worked so far.
At this point, we pretty much go nowhere as CO has been super slow to reopen (50th out of 51 states in terms of most restrictive covid rules). My girls both work and will need to return to work though masks and gloves are required for both. As I said, my dh will be required to quarantine.

ETA: Dh just said his workplace will only require 10 days of quarantine. Neither dd's workplace requires any quarantine.

You might want to look into a streamline VA interest rate reduction refinance. No appraisal required. Not sure what the current rates are, but we locked in 2.75% on ours in May. We are still waiting to close, but it has been super easy and only consisted of filling out a few forms. No appraisal, and they didn’t even do a credit check.

What bank is this? We're looking to do a streamline refinance.
