This kind of reminds me of what happened to a lot of points reservations last month. There seems to have been a glitch that canceled old points bookings that should have locked in the old, lower rate, and rebooked the reservation with a new, higher rate, without the reservation holder having made any changes.

Here’s a post about this issue: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/marr...ting-points-automatically-check-your-account/ (This DoC story is for your resource and background info only. Please don’t be one of those people on a call with Marriott who says something like, “but there’s a post on the Doctor of Credit blog that says so and so!”)

I’ve only seen DPs of this issue affecting purely points reservations, not FNCs. The solution has typically been for Marriott to issue a courtesy adjustment of points for the difference between the old rate and the new rate to cover your reservation. This appears to be what Marriott has done in your case. However, as you know, there’s no way to combine your 35k FNC with the 5k points adjustment to get your room back.

What needs to happen is you need to demand your room back, escalate if you have to, HUCA if you have to, and ask that Marriott take your FNC that had been attached to your reservation and give you another adjustment for the value of the FNC (35k) so that you have 40k points to use on the room that you had already booked before their error. I don’t know if the supervisor you talked to will do it, but keep calling and try to speak to someone else. Marriott doesn’t have a policy of letting you “cash out” FNCs for their points value (wouldn’t we all love to jump on this if they did?), but this is Marriott’s error so they should be able to make an exception to help you fix their mistake. This solution should technically be possible.

I hope this works out.
Thank you! That is really helpful information although it stinks that it’s happened to other people too. We plan to call again today and hopefully we’ll get someone more willing to help.

Yeah, just gonna echo to make sure you check your Marriott reservations after the latest devaluation.

We booked nights at the Fairfield Philadelphia Downtown in May using our Chase 35k nights. At the time we booked, it was a category 4 with peak pricing in effect (yep). After the devalue, the property is moving to a category 5 (of course it is). DW's nights are still booked, but the night I booked mysteriously disappeared, and I had to go back in and re-book it. Luckily it's still showing cat 4 so I can use my cert. But I never received any cancellation email or anything. It was just gone from my account and the cert was back available to use.

I have no doubt this was done on purpose. I'm just glad I checked.

SOOOOO, I am OBVIOUSLY back!!! I've been posting but wanted to post a real update. I left my most precious cargo in WDW for the next 6 mos. My super sweet dd19 is there for her dcp. I miss her desperately! She is not only one of my dd's, she is one of my best friends. I am blessed to be able to say that!

We flew in last wednesday and used a FNC for a springhill suites off Palm Pkwy. This hotel is so, so nice! It was 10 mins to Disney property. Our room slept 6 but we were only provided bedding for 5. Since we were only a party of 4, that was fine. Breakfast was great and included Mickey waffle making stations. My only complaint was the bathroom could have been a tad bit cleaner (hair in the shower when we hadn't used it yet...) but otherwise, so nice. We did have to pay a $14 parking fee.

Next three nights were at ASMo. I have zero complaints. Comfortable and I love the refurbed rooms. All was great there.

DD is settling in. She already has a lot of friends and is making more. She will be at BOG for breakfast and/or lunch. If you see this cutie, tell her that her momma misses her!

Glad everything went well! I will look for her when I am down there!

I have a question about planning for a big trip 2 years out.
How do you know which points to go for if you aren’t sure which airlines you would be taking?
My 40th bday is in June 2022. I really want to do an Alaskan cruise. I know I want nonstop flights New York to Seattle which looks like Delta, United or Alaskan Air. I have no miles at any of these since we usually fly Southwest or JetBlue.
Should I just pick one and hope the flights work out in 2 years?
I will be working on building up UR and MR with no particular use but can always find something to do with them.

Right now, Alaskan airlines is the cheapest option if we were going this year. I lIke that their credit card isn’t Chase or Amex.
What is the highest bonus I should wait for if perusing the Alaskan air credit card?

Ok @Haley R - now you got me on the topic so I wanted to look it up, lol. Rides that a small child (under 34") can do at USO:

Islands of Adventure:
Storm Force Accelatron (Super Hero Teacups)
One Fish, Two Fish (Seuss Dumbo)
Caro-Seuss-el

Hogwart's Express (if you have a P2P ticket)

Universal Studios:
Twirl 'n' hurl (Simpson's Dumbo)

They can also watch Shrek 4-D...

It's pretty grim. At 34" you gain E.T.

36" gains you 2 more Seuss rides, Pteranodon Flyers (with a usually brutal line except for early AM), Skull Island Kong (if you want to terrify your little one), Woody Woodpecker's coaster, Flight of the Hippgriff.

You actually have to be 40" to do the Minion Mayhem movie "ride".

So until 36"...it's a tough proposition! Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy a trip to USO...but before that little one is 36" you either want to leave them behind, or make it a big family trip where you can pass the child around and give everybody an opportunity to ride...and have a plan on how to entertain them for hours on end while everybody else has fun!

Luckily the first time we went there were 7 of us so it worked out ok...but my daughter (at 2 years old) actually pointed out that there was nothing for her to do, lol.
We’re heading back to Universal next month. We’ve been several times, including last year when we got APs (the reason we’re going again this year), but this will likely be the most challenging. Our 20-month-old is 32 inches. So there’s almost nothing she can ride. Last year, she was 8 months old, so content to just chill in her stroller and take it all in. Rider switch worked fine, because she didn’t mind waiting in line with us. Navigating Universal with a stroller is harder than at Disney (waiting for the elevator at Hogwart’s Express, etc.), but a baby was fine to have.

An active toddler, though, ugh. But her brothers are all big HP fans, we have the APs, and she doesn’t cost much yet. So I foresee more hotel time with her, more splitting up, and more seeking out some play areas.

I think I might write an article for the Dis about Universal with a toddler for anyone who finds themselves in a a similar situation. There’s not much info out there right now about it. Probably because that’s a terrible age to take to Universal! 😜

While I am being nostalgic. 10 years ago and soon he’ll be returning as a teenager!

Just a quick DP on my no AF Hilton Aspire.

I met spend Dec 15th, and saw no points (not just the SUB, none at all) after 3 statements. My third statement closed 2/5 and I called 2/7. Linda from SLC was sort of snippy and told me Amex could hold those points from 8-12 weeks after the SUB was earned. I don't know if it was coincidence or just my strongly worded dissatisfaction as a long time customer (19 years according to Amex) but yesterday when I was on the website I noticed my Hilton points had deposited, finally!

By the numbers-from SUB to posting 3 statements 7weeks and 6 days, 2 phone calls for 175K Hilton Honors points (sub plus spend).

No sexy redemptions for me-3 airport hotels ranging from 42K to 69K each (AMS, ATL, BOS) and 2 nights for my parents in Fargo, ND at a Hilton Garden Inn. Still, nice to have the points and use them in a practical manner. I'm an earner/burner these days.

We got #Bonvoyed :jester: I know we have people here who travel often for work so I am channeling my annoyance from the events of a few days ago into what is hopefully a useful post...

DH and I are both in LA for work this weekend. We were at the W Hollywood for one night. As I'm sure you can guess, we did not choose this hotel. My employer booked it. DH's company uses Hilton & he has never, ever had these issues. In fact, we are now at an HGI courtesy of his employer. My employer offered to cover the first night because we were arriving early & they were glad not to have to pay the other nights. We thought this would be nice. @ us

1. They informed us that we were not eligible for any points or Gold status benefits because the room was booked on a corporate rate. Not once, ever, at any Marriott, Hyatt, or Hilton have I ever heard this. But, maybe I missed something & it's a rate that isn't eligible for points or stay credit. That's fine. But what does that have to do with my status benefits??? Eventually they gave me the wifi & acted like they were doing me a huge favor. Thanks for graciously giving me something I was entitled to anyway, I guess. (I'll let you guess whether or not we got any welcome points or a room upgrade.)

2. The woman at the front desk, who was smiling so nicely at the couple in front of us, stopped smiling as soon as she saw us. (For those who don't know, my DH is Japanese.) She asked us for the reservation name, then "have you recently traveled through China?" & "are you currently experiencing a fever or any other symptoms?" I could have gone either way on this. Maybe it's something they ask everyone. But sometimes, when you smell a rat, you know it's a rat. So I admittedly acted like a creep & went to stand where she couldn't see me, and listened as she checked in the next three groups. Not one person was asked a single question about China or the virus. I really didn't want to waste any more time but this was a "manager, now" situation & for his part, he seemed horrified. Not sure if it was really sincere but he called her away from the desk & we didn't see her again for the rest of the day or the next morning, so :) Whether coincidental or not, I'll take it. (I really wanted to go back & ask that woman if she is a racist in general, or just to East Asian people, & does she know China is in fact NOT the only country in East Asia? But I refrained.)

I'm really trying to find something nice to say about the hotel. It has a nice staircase? The bathrooms are nice? There's free yoga? I mean, overall, the accommodations are fine, but I was so put off by the check-in experience that I could not enjoy it at all.

So, if anyone has any upcoming Marriott stays booked on a corporate rate, be ready to fight for your points if you want them. And, if you or someone you're traveling with is of East Asian descent, be prepared to be treated like you're carrying the plague. You keep hearing that folks are being "tested" for the virus & the results take days to come back. Well, good news for all... coronavirus testing done on sight! Coming soon to a Marriott hotel near you :p

Sorry for your terrible experience! People suck. Esp people that stereotype and are/act racist. My DH is Ecuadorian by birth/US Citizen, and you cannot believe how many times he gets the "Mexican" stereotype or racism attached to the stigma. I also sometimes want to say "You know there are other Hispanic countries besides Mexico? You know Mexico is in North America and Ecuador is in South America, right?! Two different continents." But people are vapid and it hardly ever does anything good to call them out on it. Some people are so ingrained in their ways....smh. So I feel your pain and I'm sorry that happened. :(

We’ll have our car and will most likely drive to most of the places but MK would be a lot nicer without having to drive. I hate driving there and taking the monorail or ferry. I’m basically looking at the whole month of February, preferably weekends so Dh doesn’t have to miss two days of work. I didn’t realize how busy February was.
One issue with the cabins is the boat doesn’t run in foggy weather. When we stayed there 2 mornings the boats didn’t start running until after park opening. One morning we got to the dock to be told ‘not running, get a bus’. By the time we got to the main bus terminal, boats were running.
Also food options at Fort Wild are limited.

I doubt it in SoCal at least. LA is very very diverse. DH graduated from UCLA and jokes its real name is The University of Caucasians Lost Among Asians. I suspect a US passport will elicit much fewer inquiries-at least in the US. Coming back, who knows? I think any international travel might result in more questions for a while, depending on the virus fear level at that time.

Thanks! Been waiting for one. I think I’ll buy a few hundred $ for our Spring Break trip. Since Discover is 5% this quarter, would be saving more than using CSR for dining and other stuff.

That’s terrible that he was singled out. Honestly they should be asking everyone or no one. Some cruise ships are refusing anyone traveling on a Chinese passport, no matter how recently they have been to China. The hospital I work at, the docs are supposed to be screening everyone with those questions. The chances of someone not Asian having been to Wuhan (Hubei) is very low. I have been there and the only Caucasian people we saw were in our travel group, people openly stared when we were walking around. It is an area with lots of manufacturing plants and lots of Japanese businessmen but very few westerners. But if you’re going to screen people, you screen everyone.
But Trail’s End is so yummy and reasonably priced for dinner!
Never managed to get there when it was open.

Universal is torture with small children! I still remember our first trip there when my younger daughter was 2... there was a day where the only thing she rode that moved was the Hogwart's Express. Seriously...the Cat in The Hat ride has a 36" height requirement (mind you this ride has about the same movement as the Pooh ride at MK). It almost poisoned my whole opinion of USO...luckily I gave it another shot down the line after my daughter grew but that first trip it seriously bugged me!
This is exactly why we have waited to go to Universal. I hope it’s worth the wait.

I humbly disagree... I recall a couple of fun trips when mine were young.... I think they were like 3 and 8.... yes it's different than Disney, but we all had a blast- the big kids (lol) did the scary rides, and the little kids (and me b/c I'm a wimp) did the kiddie rides.... it was fun! Our upcoming USO trip includes infant-70's ages again...we plan to have some FUN! My Dh liked the 'big' rides WAY better than at Disney, since most of those are not really scary and geared for all ages (he wanted scary!)

I’m so sorry, and really upset that this happened.

Asia is a large continent. Japan is completely different from China. There are Asian people of all ethnicities and nationalities who live and travel all over the world. Asians aren’t the only ones traveling in and from Asia. The coronavirus can infect and be carried by a person of any ethnicity. Wow, just wow. It’s 2020!

I hope you post this story on Bonvoyed.com, Yelp.com and TripAdvisor.com [or Marriott’s Twitter] where it’ll get more views. This kind of thing is unacceptable and deserves a formal apology to you, and hopefully serves as a lesson for the hotel and it’s staff.
