Just a quick note for anyone in CA who has an AMEX Plat - as Uber/Lyft are likely to suspend service by midnight tonight, you may want to make sure you capitalize on your Uber credit. We typically use ours for UberEats so we’ll be ordering in tonight! :)

First post in this board, but have been lurking around for awhile. I feel like I "know" you all and would appreciate your advice :) I'd like to apply for a new card but really am not sure there is a need, which one would be best, if I have something already that could be changed OR be using what we have in a better way. The only rewards I have ever used are our Disney dollars. I have Chase rewards on the Freedom but have never used them or cashed them in.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts or advice you may have!!

We have the following cards and haven't applied for a new card since 2014. Currently we only spend on the Chase cards. The Amex is the "emergency" card and doesn't get used. If I'm interested in the Amex Gold perhaps I should reconsider using this one more often?
  • Chase Freedom
  • Chase Disney Premier
  • USAA Cashback Rewards Amex

  • We spend approx $2000-$2500 on our cards each month and have recently started using them for all expenses (grocery, fuel, electric, tv, phone, etc)
  • We payoff our cards each month and do not carry a balance.
  • We aren't traveling at the moment or foreseeable future
  • We fly Delta and Southwest primarily
  • Marriott preference since we do have Marriott rewards account
  • I recently started my own small business as a consultant this year so I have separate business checking/savings but no CC related to the business. I would like to have a credit card available so I'm not using the debit card linked to the account. Currently the business has very few expenses since I do much of my work remotely.

@softballpooh

Honestly sounds like you could benefit from a Chase Sapphire Preferred then after that might want to get a Southwest credit card. The two work well together because you can transfer UR points to SW at a 1 to 1 ration for RR points.

The CSP is one I was leaning toward but it was unclear if I could just call and ask for my current Freedom to be changed to that card. Is that a possibility or do I make a completely new application?

If you product change from your freedom I don't believe you get the 60k sign up bonus. I would just apply for a new one.

I know but I use a credit union not chase and a 2nd checking acct just for it isn't something I'd want to manage.

Not dvc, but that does sound like the offer. I didn't pay attention to the fee just the offer. And if I can get 200 on the no fee then it's the same, after you pay the fee it's a whole extra dollar 😁 but I haven't looked into it a ton as it's all a timing/velocity issue at this point. Almost a year since I've had a chase card...

If you pay the fee with the $250 statement credit and actually choose to use the card, you will also get 2 points per dollar instead of 1 point. But, so many here have the ability to just use a CIC to buy gift cards at %5 it's a non issue.

:welcome: with your spend I would apply for a CSP, you get 60,000URs after spending $4k the first 3 months...you could then send your DH a support link so you earn 15k URs and he earns the 60k UR sign up bonus....for a total of 143,000URs
If you aren’t traveling right now Chase has a new...pay yourself back feature on the CSP ..Right now ....you can erase Grocery, dining and home improvement stores Until 9/30

edit...no you would not get the bonus if you PC the CF

Welcome! What are your future plans and objectives?

Extra cash? Home Depot gift cards for a new appliance? (that was me)
Disney trip?
Free hotel rooms?
Free flights? First or Business Class free flights eventually to Europe/Australia/Asia/Africa? People here stash their points for small redemptions and really big redemptions and if starting up now, they would plan as far as 2-3 years out for a 'lifetime' type trip.

Right now, you could build up your UR's - the CSP would be a good start.

Or you could take advantage of other Chase options while you are 0/24.

Other options are hotel cards, airline cards as well as cashback cards and Amex's Membership Rewards program - right now the Gold card has a great bonus.

So, where do you want to go with this hobby?

I'd only use the card for shop Disney discounts or in park discounts if I didn't have an AP something. It's not a card I'd put much spend on at all. GC or other cards give me better return.

This sounds awesome...and a bit daunting all at the same time  I'm still reading and taking notes about how to work all of it properly. So I'll admit we've always just both been on the cards. I'm assuming as authorized users since we both get a card when they are sent out?

It sounds like if I'm applying for the CSP, then it's solely in my name and he's not referenced at this point? Then rather than him getting an authorized user card, he'll apply and get his own account with card?

Forgive me for all of the questions as I'm processing the process!

Exactly. Back a few years ago, I applied and got both Disney cards. Eventually I closed the $49 one and kept the no fee. It gets no use but has generated a couple of family supports, so I just keep it. Used to love it when Chase was a sponsor during F&W.

Exactly - you've got it!

You can make him an authorized user but it will count against him for chase 5/24 (chase only allows you to get 5 credit cards with any credit card company in 24 months). The best would be for you to get the card and then after you reach the $4k spend to refer him to get 15k referral points and then he would get 60k points. And then you can combine the points on one of your accounts. So essentially its a nice way to get 135,000 points, not counting any rewards from spend. If do make him an authorized user he can still apply for a CSP with your referral.

BofA points redemption question...does anyone know if there is anyway to redeem for electronic gift cards or do I have to wait for physical delivery?
I always just redeem my BoA rewards for a statement credit. Is that not an option? Then you could buy them digitally elsewhere.

No worries asking questions we are a friendly bunch....
Yes you would apply for the CSP in your name only and not add your DH as an authorized user.....then send him a support link from your CSP so you get support points and he gets the 60UR bonus too...
Before I found this group 2 years ago I did the same as you always added my DH, learned quickly not to and to have him(well me, but with his permission) apply for the same card to maximize sign the up bonus

The only BoA I have is the Amtrak card so I don't know, but sometimes gift cards are discounted (and sometimes they are too expensive). Anyway, the discount is a reason I would get them directly from BoA if it were to exist. I do statement credits with my Navy Fed card but I keep an eye on the gift cards also. I've seen them do a Navy Fed cash card - somewhat like a Visa Gift Card - but not quite, at a 10% discount. Anytime I get 'cash' at a discount, I'm there.

I'm not sure how to do that and I am also not sure it makes sense since I put so little spend on that card.

Oh, be sure to give us a holler if you see Navy Fed Cash card at a discount. I've just been applying points to my account. Never even knew they had a Cash Card.
