The HS books were high (as in over $1K some years, and that was with me finding those college science textbooks they used online). Ironically, our college book bill was incredibly low since DD found ways to get online access (I have no idea how but I think that college kids across the country are sick of the high prices and scan their books and put them online) or borrow from friends (looking at you, $350 P-Chem textbook).
Yooza! I am debating whether I should buy used or new. I am not sure how “used” used is.

The low value of the Hilton points is what has made me pause when it comes to getting those AMEX cards (well, that and the need to then put spend on them every month). Do you think this new Biz bonus is worth it?

This is @Andysol's take on the Hilton Biz and Surpass offers:

I agree, and I'm seriously considering the Surpass for DW who is at only 1/24, if we can manage the MSR and she doesn't get the pop up. If we do get the card, I'd likely target the $15k spend needed for a 2nd FWN cert so we can make a weekend trip out of this card.

I think the value is in those FWNs. If you have an idea or plan for them in the next year, this bonus is worth it.

If they come out with new editions often enough I would think it wouldn't be much different than used in college. You're obsticle I'm guessing would be buying online so you can't actually see it like when I'd buy at the bookstore in college. It was easy to find one that looked good. If you are ok with highlighting and potentially notes on the pages I would go for it. I would think if it's through a bookstore and not an individual that they quality would be better, you wouldn't find books with actual damage. I also can't imagine highlighting when I was in MS, maybe HS if it had been an option but that also would have meant I'd actually read the books when I was in hs, the way stuff was taught and tested it wasn't necessary. But I also think school was easier 20+ years ago than now.

Someone remind me -

So DH holds the Sapphire Preferred. He last got the bonus on it well more than 48 months ago. He is still not able to apply for the CSR, correct due to the 1 Sapphire rule?
If he cancels or PCs the CSP he can. If it’s been 48 months, he could PC to a CF and even do a MDD.

The highlighting and the notes are my actual concern. I want DS to figure out on his own what is important to highlight and note so he can develop that skill. I am afraid he’ll just focus on what someone else thought was important. I think this year I’ll go with new and re-evaluate next year after he actually gets to experience having textbooks.

Would anyone here book a flight with a 54 min connection? It would be EWR to IAD, then 54 mins connection for IAD to NRT.

I opted to take the EWR to IAD flight the night before because I would freak out with only 54 mins to catch my international flight. I hate wasting an entire night though.
I would not book an international flight with a connection that tight unless I had no choice (and even then I would familiarize myself with potential alternatives in case it all went IROPS).

The Marriott Promos seem to be more and more targeted - I wish I had gotten those 10 bonus nights too. I am of the opinion that Plat is vastly superior to Gold in the new program. Gold doesn't get you much, Platinum gets you lounge access when there is one, breakfast at lots of brands and suite night awards which are nice, when you can use them. I've had pretty good luck with upgrades as a Platinum, got very few when I was Gold.

It would depend on how cheaply you could do the 8 nights - if you have points to burn (or a Cat 1 near enough that you can do a couple of mattress runs there), I would seriously consider it. For me, a $200 conference room would almost always be the cheapest way to get the extra nights, because there are no cat 1s near me. It would be worth it if I knew it would get me, say, breakfast for 2 people 10x next year.

My birthday is coming up in Sept. I'm going to call at that time and see if they still give the birthday elite night credit. It sounds like they might. That takes care of one night, but still need seven more. I'm looking into the meeting!

Struggling with reddit. Was hoping to review the Citi info but that thread does not come up at all on DISchurners and doesn't come up when I search. Tips? I always have this problem with reddit, where I can't find anything once it is off the first page...

Interesting...another Bonvoy note...the hotel I'd like to book and it's in my category doesn't allow use of the free night certificate? This is a thing? I thought it was good for any marriott brand in correct category? Is this another example of being bonvoyed?

They have to have a standard room available to use a cert. Do you have a standard room points option? That's usually the easiest way to see if your cert will work. If not, and you think they have a standard room available for cash, you can try calling to book through their no blackout "guarantee". ( No actual guarantee you won't still get bonvoyed, but won't know until you try)

Where are you buying them from? Any way to find out the condition by contacting them? I get the highlighting, I'd always find one with out it or worst case I'd find one where they gave up after the first chapter :rotfl2:

I would not be surprised if you and DH's credit score goes down with the new mortgage. Nothing to worry about, but like chase's free credit score will site-something to the effect that your current loan balance compared to the total loan is too high (it is complete baloney because this pretty much dings anyone with a new mortgage as it takes years to make enough dent in the payoffs to make a difference). Also I think the new "young" account can decrease the score too. My credit score still has not completely rebounded after my new mortgage about 2 years ago, my previous mortgage was a great help to my credit score when I started churning as it kept the score pretty stable. This is not to deter anyone from getting a mortgage, as I strongly believe it is helpful in regards to your bust out risk.

Do not use your own link, and I would recommend not using the "r" word on the thread. AMEX has clawed back people who self supported.

Typically my card has to be touching the screen for the contactless to work. I typically just touch the card right above the pin pad and takes probably less than 15 seconds. Seems way less then if you would insert the card for the chip.

You have already gotten some great infor above. Read through the first couple posts on this thread if you have gotten any credit cards in the last 24 months that may alter our advice.
I forgot about the mortgage. Good point
