@CyndiLouWho and another Chicagoans (if that's a word)- Looks like I get to Chicago for a conference in July and want to take DH and DS with me. What's there to do for a 12 year old? We'll be staying on the Magnificent Mile without a car for 4 or 5 nights. I'll have to "work" while my boys play I've been before but did adult things after a conference like hit the dance clubs until 4 am. Won't be happening on this trip.

Not a local, but I visited as a tourist with my DD when she was 15 or 16 and DH was at a conference, so I can tell you what we did. We stayed at the Westin (no choice) and there is a tall tower next door (sorry I can't remember the name) so we went up to the top and looked around. We walked on the Miracle Mile and did a bit of window shopping. We took an architectural river cruise and that was really cool. We looked at colleges (LOL too early for you). We loved the Art Museum and the Science & Industry Museums. And we had pizza at Giordano's. Chicago was lots of fun.

Another vote for plastic bin-we have 2, actually, one for diet dog food for the bulldog and one for the regular dog food. Just like kids, they prefer whatever they're not fed When I worked at the rescue, we used aluminum trash cans-the lids are quite sturdy, seal well and they hold a lot.

Question for all you CC experts:

DD needs a card with no FTC for her upcoming year abroad. She currently has a CFU and is interested in getting more URs (although not at all opposed to MRs either). She will be earning money but honestly the stipend is pretty small, so no large salary to use for one of the fancier cards. She's already an AU on DH's plat, so if she really needs to make a big charge she can, but she wants to earn more points that she can use for travel so she'd prefer her own card.

Any thoughts?

ETA - Considering a CIP but the spend might be an issue for us since we just got a 5K MSR of our own and she can't make the CIP MSR on her own.

My first thought was Giordanos because that's where my family went back in 2012... though I think we picked it on a whim. I didnt know it was a thing until getting on these boaeds. We do both - the original bag, inside a plastic container. We have a cat & a dog, and the dog will definitely eat the cat's food if we give her the opportunity. (The cat is too good for the dog's food.) If the dog can't smell the food, everyone is happier. It's also easier to store a plastic container than a bag, for sure.

I've had Dude's food in a platic container for 30 lb bags as long as I can remember. He can't smell it or he chooses to ignore it but he's fully got a hound nose and can sniff out dog treats in a sealed ziplock 4 ft above him on a shelf so I think it does a good job of keeping it fresh. It's certainly easier.

They have pet food bags with velcro now? They should do zip top like some treat bags, that would seal way better than velcro
It seems like air amd moisture could get through the velcro since it's not air tight.

I'm very intrigued by the velcro, I've never seen that before. I would think the plastic container would seal better, personally, having never had a resealable pet food bag. We actually kept the dogs food while growing up in a big popcorn tin

I'm voting plastic container but that's just because thats how we store both the dog and cat food. Our dog food has one of those velcro tops and I haven't considered keeping the food in that but more so because the bags too big to handle. It's easier to just scoop it out of the container as needed.

Thanks for all of the replies -- it seems no one thinks that the velcro is especially good or the plastic container is bad, so I'm going to call that a win for me and put the food in the plastic container. We buy the 3-lb bags because the cats actually don't eat a lot; fortunately we can just leave the dry food out and neither of them will binge on it.

The other of us says we should store the cat food in an airtight plastic food container with a pop-up kind of lid so that it's easier to dispense and looks neater in the pantry. This person would concede that we should keep it in the bag if it really does stay fresher that way, but is not convinced that the velcro strip is better than the plastic container.

So, does anyone here know what is the best way to store dry cat food?

We just keep ours in the bag and clip the top of it after folding it over lol. We keep ours in the garage though.

That's some fancy velcro they are using, makes noise when opening and closing so you know it's sealed. If they can do this for dog food why is our cereal still out of the stone ages? Folding over a bag and closing the flap on the box don't keep it fresh, which isn't how I store it but is the expectation of kellogs, post and general mills.

When I lived in chicago we ate at uno’s (gross), gino’s East (meh), and gioradono’s (my favorite). Ds had Lou milnati’s once (step mom ordered it for his dad’s bday) so he wanted to go there. The wait at 2 pm was an hour and ds was hangry and unimpressed! Anyway, I still like gioradono’s the best!

Tokyo Disney is also relatively inexpensive compared to its US counterparts, so hopefully no “Most Expensive Day Ever” t-shirts.

@mmmears --it looks like finding a good general travel points MC/Visa with no FTF and a low MSR is a challenge. If your DD is a BOA customer, they have an entry level "travel" rewards card with $0 AF, 1.5x points on everything and 25K (aka $250) after $1000 spend and no FTF. It's a Visa so it could complement her Amex. It's not a big bang popular card but might not be a bad option for two years in Norway. I'll keep digging but that's the best I can come up with unless she's interested in a Chase United Explorer or one of the Citi AA cards (not your favorite airlines, IIRC!).

I’d give the CIP serious consideration regardless of the $5k MSR. The CIP does not have foreign exchange fees, which is your big criteria; and is approved with a minimum $5k CL. If she/you can’t meet the MSR organically, there’s always Venmo for a relatively small 3% fee. If DD Venmo-ed only enough to hit the $5k MSR, that’s $4,854.37 with only $145.63 in fees for an 80k UR SUB, and I’m assuming 20k UR support points to you/DH. Call it reimbursement for tuition or moving fees to Norway.

Completely agree with this and is what I was going to suggest as well. I’ll be using Venmo for part of dd’s CIP msr. I have another card with a 5k spend on the way as well!
