I Like Warm Hugs! - Mommy/Toddler Trip ~ Updated 6/20: New Trip Report Link!

We left off making our way from our Buzz Lightyear meet to our Ariel meet. We walked past the Speedway and I was thankful that Izzy did not beg to go on the cars. She loves cars, but we really didn’t have time for it and also didn’t have a FP+ for it. Whew, lucked out on that one, since she didn’t pay attention to the cars as we passed.

We made it to Ariel’s Grotto and scanned the FP+ Magic Band and headed in. I love the theming and the seashells in the floor in there.

When it was her turn, Izzy went up to Ariel and sat with her all by herself. She really likes Ariel. I told Ariel that she was Izzy’s favorite Duplo. Not sure if she knew what to think of that. Anyway, since she was up there on her own, it freed me up to take some pictures:







The Photopass photographer was also taking pictures:









The timestamp on those was 5:10pm, so we were moving along quite nicely, meeting two characters less than 20 minutes apart. Izzy had not been overly enthusiastic with either of them, but I could tell that she was getting more comfortable - walking up and sitting with Ariel was good progress!

Since we were right by it, I decided to go over to Under the Sea to check how early we could use our 5:30pm FP+. I knew there was some flexibility to the times, but wasn’t sure how much. The CM told me 5 minutes early. Since I still had 15 minutes before I’d be able to get in, and I didn’t want to sit around, we went off in search of something to fill that time. My original thought had been to try to squeeze in a meet with Minnie, but Izzy really had her eye on the Caroussel. Given the proximity and short wait, not to mention her enthusiasm, we jumped into the standby line and rode the horsies (I shared with her):









As we left the ride, we saw Pooh and Tigger walking past us. Unfortunately, they didn’t stop and pat her head like in December, just walked on:



However, since we were near their ride, I thought we might as well hit that too. The posted wait was about 20 minutes and the interactive queue is a lot of fun, so why not? Izzy had a good time trying everything out:

It arrived and we loaded in. And Izzy immediately decided that she didn’t want to ride and started screaming and struggling to get out. I have no idea why, as she’d loved this ride in June. We were past the point of no return, though, so she had to stick it out. And she was fine for the rest of the ride. Toddlers are strange. She enjoyed looking around:

Izzy really enjoyed spotting Ariel throughout the ride:







I was glad to get in another ride on this. It’s still new enough to me that it has a lot of re-rideability and I always spot something new.

At this point, I had used up Izzy’s 3 FP+ selections, so I stopped at a FP+ kiosk and got It’s a Small World for 6:15-7:15pm with her Magic Band.

It was almost time to go meet Anna & Elsa with my final pre-selected FP+, so we stopped into a restroom to change into our Olaf shirts that I’d packed for the occasion. I changed into mine and went to grab Izzy’s out of the bag and realized…that I’d absentmindedly packed hers in the checked bag! Ugh! And now she really wanted to change her shirt, since Mommy did. Luckily, I had a spare outfit packed and there was a Rapunzel shirt – eh, she’s a princess too, right? So, we went with that and Izzy was pleased.

Our FP+ window opened at 6:20pm and we were there right on time. Another waiting selfie:

When it was our turn, I carried Izzy up to Anna and a Cast Member was kind enough to take pictures with my phone (I didn’t actually know if I’d be getting Photopass for this trip until after, when I got in on Lauren’s share, so I was diligent on getting my own pictures as well):

Anna was great! She was very sweet, warm, and fun – and she did a great job of getting Izzy more comfortable with her as they chatted. I was relieved, as our last meet with the Frozen sisters in June did not go so well (um, Izzy was absolutely terrified – maybe she thought Elsa was going to freeze her?)

We moved on to Elsa and I felt like she was true to character – a bit colder. Still fine and nice, but not quite so bubbly. Izzy was okay with her, but not as enthralled as she’d been with Anna. Again, a CM took some pics for me:

We were out of there around 6:30pm and decided to stop back at the FP+ kiosk and add a new one for me, as I’d just used my 3rd one. I got Pirates from 6:40-7:40pm. There weren’t tons of options, but I was doing pretty well getting things that we wanted to do in a very short time frame. Not a bad way to knock out a bunch of stuff in Fantasyland – just keep grabbing a FP+ shortly before you want to ride (the Philharmagic kiosk area was very convenient as well).

And, thanks to this strategy, it was already time to use another Fast Pass!

I think I've said it a lot recently, but there is just something really special about the carousel. I think it's because seeing his kids on a carousel as he just sat and watched is what prompted Disneyland to begin with. And see that... parents and kids riding together. Dream fulfilled.

Aw yay for Anna. She really is a fun meet. I kind of feel bad for Elsa in comparison. Her character just can't compare.

Thanks! I think it was the first time she wore it at WDW - I remember having it back in December 2013, but I think it was just a "backup" shirt then too. I'm just glad she was okay with it, after having been promised an Olaf shirt.

I agree - and well said! We were never big on the carousel pre-Izzy. We'd ride if we had time and there wasn't a line, but it wasn't a priority. However, having a toddler really changes that. It's a must-do for her. And, to your point, she's ridden other carousels, but I think the WDW one is the only one I've actually been able to ride WITH her (vs. standing next to her). Thanks, Walt!

Ha, just wait. I think the mommy touring gets a lot more productive with age. She was old enough this trip to really be able to hang in there with me and not need to nap or eat or wander all the time, like a younger baby/toddler would. But, yeah, I am lucky that she is generally pretty cooperative - both at WDW and at home. She's a good kiddo.

She is really fond of Ariel! I was so happy that she felt comfortable enough to walk up (especially after being pretty character-shy in June). The rest of this first day is me holding her, but the rest of the trip is much more like the Ariel meet. She still seems to be very comfortable meeting characters - she RAN up to sit on Santa's lap last weekend. (Well, not to mention the character-palooza still to come in the Aulani report).

Thanks! In my easily-distractable state tonight, I went over and read your TR! Love all the pics - especially AoA - you'll see that in this report, but I had SUCH limited time and didn't get to see a lot of what you did - and really want to!

Oh, and thanks on the mommy skills! You know, I don't really feel like I'm doing anything special - I think anyone could do it, but many don't try - and I want to document the details for those that may give it a shot. I certainly didn't do everything perfectly, but it was a fantastic experience for both of us! I also had some "training" when Lauren and I did the joint trip in June with our girls - I had someone to share the trip with, but was still totally responsible for Izzy. And reading Lauren's TRs helped too, as she had traveled alone previously with her daughter Aria and showed that it can (and should) be done!

We arrived to our next FP+ destination and parked the stroller before heading inside:



Turns out that we didn’t really need the FP+ for this at all, as we were literally dumped right into the standby line, as it was shorter than where the lines meet up:



It was pretty quick and we were on a boat taking selfies while we waited to sail:

As she had last December, Izzy loved the ride again. As most toddlers do. She spent the whole time just looking around and trying to take it all in:

I was getting excited about Hawaii too:



It was a good voyage. We exited and found our stroller and Izzy wanted to drink some of her milk. We headed out of the stroller parking lot after that. I took a picture of the stroller on my way to find dinner. You can see that she was done drinking milk (right cupholder), I might have still had some water from Gaston’s (left cupholder), and I was using the carabiner to hold the backpack:



Which, admittedly, wasn’t the most convenient thing, but it worked for a short trip. I was doing it that way because I had chosen to bring Dug’s backpack as my park bag this trip because I wanted to be able to carry things on my back, being solo and not always having free hands (especially on the bus, since I had to fold and carry on the stroller). However, the large backpack didn’t fit in the small basket under the stroller. In the past, I’ve brought bags that can fit over the stroller handle, but that wasn’t going to work with this backpack. But this arrangement did. And, since I had nothing of real value in the backpack (mostly stuff Izzy needed, spare outfits, raingear, etc), I left it attached when I parked the stroller (I had a small wallet thing that I kept with me). The only issue I had was that the backpack had to be in the middle of the handle when moving or it would hit the wheels. But, when I stopped and took Izzy out of the stroller, it would be off-balance and really easy to tip backwards, so had to be moved to the side when parked. In case I forget to mention later how much the Safari stroller-parking CMs probably loved it. (Sorry, that was a longer-than-intended tangent! )

Ugh, bag choice is an important pre-trip decision! You never put much thought into it until you have a kid and all their stuff to keep track of. I love my stroller, but the compartment on the bottom has to the be the worst one ever invented. I actually took the spare stroller my mom owns in December, because I wasn't in the mood to carry around a bag.

This kid has already had a lifetime of phones and cameras in her face, I guess. It is definitely easier to capture a direct shot with a smile in selfie form vs. acting like a fool behind the camera to get her to look and smile. Aw, even you like her Small World pictures! She loves looking at herself! One of her favorite hobbies is watching videos of herself. Random tangential funny story: the other day, her face was super messy after eating and she didn't want me to clean it - then I held the phone up for a selfie to show her and she immediately gave me permission to clean her up.

Yes, and you know about bag choice with P.I.T.A.! You're right about a kid changing things. Just today, we had an outing with Dug's family and left Izzy with my dad and stepmom. I remarked to Dug as we left the restaurant that I felt like I was forgetting something - I was only carrying a purse, no child, no diaper kit, no food bag, etc. I almost forgot how easy it was to go places without a toddler. And why can't they make decent baskets on the otherwise-good strollers?! Ours is a joke. The best one was actually the stroller frame we had for her infant seat - you could fit a ton in that basket! Loved it!

She just loved all the things to look at in Small World. There really is so much to see in there that you can't take it all in.

We were on our way to find some dinner. In the pre-trip planning, I’d mentioned the idea of having a waffle sandwich for dinner from Sleepy Hollow. However, I’d made Belgian waffles for breakfast at home shortly before the trip, so that craving was not so strong by the time we travelled. And that was good, as we were past the 5pm time at which they cut off the waffle sandwiches.

So, with no real plan, I started sifting through my mind for things I’d seen recently on the Disney Food Blog. Then I remembered that the BLT Waffle Fries at the Golden Oak Outpost were recommended recently. They were said to be similar to the legendary Figaro Fries that we’d missed out on when Pinocchio’s Village Haus discontinued them a few years ago. That sounded good, as I wasn’t super hungry, so we headed over there:

The wait was kind-of long, despite not really having much of a line, so Izzy amused herself by playing with her shoes:



I ordered a BLT Waffle Fries and 2 waters. It was $6.38 and 7:09pm, according to my receipt. We went and sat at a table and Izzy wanted out of her stroller to sit on the bench with me. Here are the fries:



I thought Izzy would share with me, as she normally loves fries as a special treat. However, I think the waffle fries threw her off vs. a regular shape fry. She refused to try any and asked for some cheesy bunny crackers in her snack cup instead:



I enjoyed the fries, though they were a bit messy to eat.

So, while we were eating, she came over holding an order of BLT Waffle Fries and tried to give them to us. I told her I’d only ordered one, so she headed back to the window with them. Then, a few minutes later, she returned to our table saying that she was “sorry to be a pest”, but could she see our receipt? I showed her and it was indeed one order (I’d know if I paid for two!), but she still tried to give them to us anyway. However, I wasn’t even going to be able to finish the one I had, so I knew I’d just be tossing a second order and that seemed wasteful. So, I asked her if she could find someone else to give them to who might want them…a bit of pixie dust, perhaps. She went away. A bit later, I did see her give them to another table – not sure if she found the rightful owner or was working some Disney magic, but either way, they seemed to enjoy them.

Once we’d finished our respective fries and bunnies, we headed over to ride Pirates. Since we had FP+, we got through fairly quick, but there was still a little wait before we got on the boat. Just long enough for Izzy to learn to sing, “Yo ho”, which was an unexpected highlight for me. I managed to coerce Izzy into singing a bit on video (big pause between me and her singing it, though):

We ended up being loaded into the second to last row of a boat. I noticed that they were not loading up any of the last rows for some reason and had that part of the queue blocked off. Not sure why. She liked the ride and did well on the hill, but squeezed my hand pretty tight, just as she had in June. Luckily, we did not get hit with “cannon fire”, as some people did – Izzy seemed scared of that. We got jammed up a bit at the end, but not too bad. And a picture to prove we actually rode:



After Pirates, it was starting to get dark and it was late. We had plans to head out around this time in order to get in a swim at Pop’s pool. We’d done really well knocking off the items on our to-do list, just swapping out a few: did the caroussel rather than the teacups (not a must-do) and met Buzz vs. Haunted Mansion (which had been more for me, but I was concerned it might scare her at this age). I was really happy with all we’d accomplished during our brief MK time. However, I had one more thought in mind: maybe we could hit the FP+ kiosk near the exit and get an immediate FP+ for Talking Mickey. That would be the perfect way to end our park time that day. We made our way down Main Street (quickly):



I had notes that there were kiosks at Town Square and at City Hall. I didn’t see any at Town Square and asked a CM there. She said there weren’t any there or City Hall and the closest one was in Fantasyland. I told her the internet disagreed, but she seemed certain.

I went over to City Hall anyway, just in case. Sure enough, two unmanned kiosks right there with no line at all! Score!



I pulled up Mickey and the soonest was 8:30pm. It was about 8pm by then and I still was hoping we could get back and swim at Pop, though it was later than planned (7pm at home and that is bedtime). I then realized that I could get a Tink meet with the other band at 8:20pm, so that could fill part of the time, since I didn’t want to just wait around. So, we’d probably be sacrificing the swim, but Izzy didn’t seem as into “pool” as usual when I was asking her that night. And how often can you meet talking Mickey? We can swim at home (neighborhood pool). So, I got the FP+ reserved.

I think we may have gone to do a diaper change to kill time, since there was a restroom right there.

Then I realized that I’d failed to get the “walking to the castle” picture for this trip – and this was my only chance, since we wouldn’t be back in the MK. However, I really didn’t want to walk all the way back down Main Street, fighting the parade crowds, to get it. I texted Lauren to see if she was available to take it, just in case, but the timing didn’t end up working out, as I think we were going in to meet Mickey when she got the text, then she was in the FP+ area for the parade by the time we got out. Not a big deal, though, as it’s really her tradition and I just borrowed the idea – plus, I have one from 2 months prior, so nothing had changed THAT dramatically between June and August.

Izzy and I went over to park our stroller by Town Square. Izzy noticed there was a “doggie” on the bench (this was before she called Goofy by name). I tried to get her to take a picture with Goofy on the bench, but she wouldn’t cooperate:



So, I settled for a bad selfie instead:



I parked the stroller in front of Tony’s, then realized that the Lady and the Tramp pawprint was right there:



Aw, so cute! Love those little Disney touches!

I think we killed a few minutes having a drink of water or something. Then we headed in for Tink about 10 minutes early, just to see what would happen.

The CM there had us try and the band didn’t work yet. She had us stand to the side and just try every two minutes, as she wasn’t certain when it would work. 8 minutes – nope. 6 minutes – nope. 4 minutes – ding, ding, ding! So, fairly certain that there is a 5-minute window before your FP+ time where it is open. We went in and had nobody in front of us in the staging room. That whole meet and greet area is really cool:

Notice how I am wearing both of our Magic Bands in that last picture, by the way - switching back and forth was too much for me, so I started wearing both. Anyway, it was a nice enough meet for something we hadn’t planned to do. And a good time-filler. Though, it was only 8:18pm when we left – not bad for an 8:20pm FP+ time, haha.

That was such a magic moment for me, as I had no idea that she was taking it in, then I heard her sort-of singing it and started trying to teach it to her and she picked it up. (Well, her version was "yo ho, yo ho, me", but close enough!

And how awesome that you got such a quick FP for Mickey (and Tink)!!! Can't wait to see how she does!

We had a few minutes before we’d be able to get in to meet Mickey, so I let Izzy run around an empty little area, maybe stroller parking? But I mostly saw this (her wanting up):



I spotted an empty rocking chair out on the porch, so I grabbed us a seat to pass the time:



I noticed all the other chairs were full and figured this is probably a good place to sit and watch the parade go by:



So nice to just sit and rock in Town Square:

We had to leave our nice spot, since it was now within the window for us to meet Mickey!

We got in just fine and Izzy was given the red time-tracking card. Which, as we all know, is really a secret phone to the characters:



At least that’s what Izzy told me, as she said she was calling Minnie with it. But she also told me that Minnie is a cow, so I’m not too sure about her accuracy. And I was considering telling Mickey about that, but didn’t have a chance. Not sure what he would have thought.

The FP+ wait was a bit longer than I expected, especially with how quick Tink was. I think it was around 15 minutes. While I realize that’s not terrible, it felt really long at that time of night. Izzy turned to trying to scan her Magic Band on my face for amusement. The wait was worth it, though.

Izzy was fascinated once we got close enough to see Mickey:



He was doing magic tricks with some people in front of us. I don’t have very good videos, but here’s the little bit I got:

It was a great meet and I think that it got Izzy more comfortable, as it only got better from there. Photopass time stamp says 8:39pm, so I guess we got through pretty quickly, despite it feeling like a long wait.

I've noticed that since Mickey started talking, his waits have gone up. It's too bad on the one hand but it actually makes me happy that more people are visiting Mickey again.
