I am wondering about the DVC discount for eating at Disney resturants, do I need anything besides my room key to recieve a discount? I have rented points off the rent/trade board.. so I am cheating by not actually being a member..

No, you're not cheating...but you're not getting the discount either! pirate:

The DVC Discount is one of those members-only perks. You are still eligible for the early and late hours, transportation, Magical Express, etc, etc, but unfortunately not the DVC dining discount.

Your room key will likely say "Member" on it. If it does, you should be fine receiving most member perks except park pass discounts. I would not call it cheating as you are a guest of the member staying on points.

Many of the dining establishments are now asking for the Blue Membership card before granting the discount. We had to show that at the Swan/Dolphin restaurant last time we ate there with the discount.

Best to check with your server ahead of time regarding what you need to show to get the discount. Some places will accept a resort ID with "DVC Member" on it without making you show the Blue membership card. If so, lucky you!

Best wishes -

When we were there in January we had to actually show our DVC card at two of the restaurants at DDT to get the discount.

before we owned we rented twice... we always got the member perks including dining discounts and valet parking... as an owner, on our last trip (this march) we got the perks and were never asked for our membership card...

I was under the impression that you had to present your actual DVC card to get the discount.

Whether you can get the DVC discount or not, there is a better plan if you are either a Florida resident or an annual passholder. It's called Disney Dining Experience, costs $75 for Florida residents or $50 for annual passholders, and gives you 20% (DVC is 10% in most places, 20% in a few) off. It also gives you the discount on alcoholic beverages which are excluded from the DVC discount - a big deal if you like a bottle of wine with dinner or just want to hang out and drink beer somewhere.

Yeah, you are cheating. They are member discounts, not renter discounts. Sorry. Members invest a great deal of money to become a member. You are already getting a great place to stay for a cheap price. Be happy with that. If you want the discounts, pony up the cash and buy into the club.

Although I don't like the idea of selling/renting points, I think you are not cheating at all... When a member rents you points, s/he implicitly transferred all benefits come with the points, including DVC perks if you don't have to show the blue ID.

Enjoy... You paid for it...

You are not cheating. It's up to the restaurants as to whether they give you the discount or not. Technically renters are not supposed to get them but generally have. Since this is not a perk that costs DVC anything, you are not taking anything from the members other than some seem to lose their feeling of exclusivity. I'm more secure than that in my ownership so I could care less one way or the other if you get it or not. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose.

I rented points to "try" out the DVC last December and got a discount on mini-golf. I didn't try the restaurant discount though.

While I share Dean's sentiments (if a restaurant decides to offer a discount based on room key without DVC Member Card, it's no skin off my nose - nor value taken from my ownership); I disagree with sagwanamu's statement that renting out a DVC room transfers all benefits of ownership to the tenant. They are entitled to everything that comes with the room they are renting, not everything a DVC owner gets.

Not True. The Quote below is from Disney's published Member's Guidelines. Specifically listed in my copy under the titles:

Section III. MEMBER BENEFITS AND PRIVILEGES

Item 5. RESERVING VACATION HOMES FOR NON-MEMBERS

The pertinent section is section #3:

"3) When a Member uses his or her Vacation Points to reserve a Vacation Home on behalf of a non-Member, and the Member does not charge any rental or other fees to the non-Member for the Vacation Home, the non-Member may be eligible for some Member privileges and benefits that a Member would normally receive during his or her stay in a Vacation Home. Member privileges and benefits cannot be extended to non-Members who rent Vacation Homes from Members."

I added the underline beneath the pertinent section quoted.

Last month, we drove over to Wolfgang Pucks to have a Susi dinner, AND use our DVC discount. We told the waiter when we ordered that we would be using the discount, and he said fine. Well.....when we went to pay the bill I simply handed him the room key and reminded him of the DVC discount. A few minutes later he returned and asked for the DVC membership card. I reminded him that the room key states DVC member, and handed him the DVC Membership card anyway.

I had't given this much thought until now...........

The discount is extended by a restaurant. Most (all?) of the restaurants aren't even owned by Disney. The discount is not a membership benefit extended by Disney but a courtesy/discount extended by local merchants. It's up to the restaurants to decide if the discount is available to people staying on points or just people who own DVC.

Do members even carry their DVC cards with them? When I'm on vacation I'll usually just put my room key and credit card in my pocket and will leave my wallet in the safe.

Discounts aren't a member benefit granted by DVC but rather a benefit given by the merchant.

What's interesting is some membership benefits are extened if you make a reservation and don't charge (friends/family) but aren't if you rent your points. AFAIK the reservation doesn't even indicate if the member was paid for the reservation.

I'd say this quote only serves to muddy the issue.

If you want to take advantage of the discounts, you should definitely start carrying the DVC ID. The member website and our Vacation Clubhouse mailers all now stress that the blue member ID is required to obtain member perks. I once flipped through the POS looking for something that might dispute this requirement, and couldn't find anything. :confused3

Used to be a time when the room key was adequate, but if the posts on this thread are any indication, it sounds like DVC / Disney is making an effort to deny the perks to renters.

True, but when DVC negotiates a discount with that merchant on our behalf, I'm sure they need to accurately represent the population that will be made eligible for the discount. Like all things Disney, the true administration of the perk will be consistently inconsistent. Even the member website now reads:

To take advantage of these great discounts, you must present your Disney Vacation Club Member ID Card and/your "Key to the World" card that states "Disney Vacation Club Member" at the location.

Will there be some CMs that still accept just the room key? Sure. But I wouldn't necessarily take that as a guarantee that they will deduct 10% from your dining check at the end of the meal if you can't produce the blue member ID.

I do, everywhere I go. Never can tell when you might want to pop it out and show it off :rotfl: .
