I know schools must have a dress code but this is a bit ridiculous...

Nope, no words on chest or back allowed at our school either. No pictures either.

Coming from a guy's point of view, it's really sad to see all these girls (old & young alike) wearing these shorts with words on the back. I don't really see the point of it all? That's like me getting a pair of pants that say "look at my butt" written across the backside! As for things on the front of a t-shirt, Well, that's a personal call really... :confused3

I'm not a real big fan of butt words for children either. It seems like every year we are pushing kids into being sexual objects younger and younger.

well, my kid's school doesn't allow any words or slogans or cartoons and the shirts have to have a collar. Private religious school though -- they're protecting the Temple of God. :p

Most schools remain in contact with the local police department through the year as to what gang activity is prevelant and things to watch out for in clothing. It may be annoying, but keeping your kid out of "the shirt" may also be keeping him or her safe.

I agree with the majority, I don't care for those shorts and IMO it's definitely not appropriate to wear them to school.

As for the gang colors/signs, find out exactly what they are and then avoid them.

IMO, there are so many other areas for kids to express their individuality and places to wear what they want, I wouldn't make an issue out of this.

No words on the shorts for my dd also. Totally inappropriate.

Someone gave her a pair that said "HHI (Hilton Head Island) with a lighthouse. I tossed them. And she'd die before she ever wore the word "Princess" on anything. I bought her a WDW shirt that says Princess of the court (basketball court) and it is darling. She rarely wears it.

Shorts and pants with words written across the back are not appropriate for school.
Let's be real here, they are not putting cute little words on the back of khaki walking shorts or high waisted jeans. You see words on the back of short-short "booty" shorts or low rise jeans.

I usually steer clear of posts like this, but I totally agree with this!!! It's hard to buy cute sweats these days for girls, because of this awful trend, but I will NOT buy anything that has words across the rear. Nor will I buy t-shirts that say Spoiled or Brat or Boy Watcher right across the chest either.

The only things my girls have with words on the back are sweat pants, they aren't low rise either. They have USA on the back btw.

I don't have a real problem with it, I don't buy clothes with inappropriate words no matter where they are on the clothes.

To those that believe they make children more at risk remember that a pedophile likes children. They want them to look like children, a child wearing very cute little girl clothes is just as at risk as one wearing "hotty" on their butt. It is our normal perception that makes it seem wrong, their's is skewed already.

To me its not the words that are offensive, but the fact that the eye is drawn to the butt when there is something written across it. I wouldn't want to invite that sort of opportunity when its my young daughter involved.

Your question sounds like an attempt to justify the words on the butt. I think that there is a bigger lesson in dress codes that is sometimes overlooked. More often than not a dress code exists to eliminate truly inappropriate clothing among students, as seems to be the case in your DD's school. The other part of that is the lesson that there is a time and a place for everything and the more appropriate the children dress for school, the better the behavior and the grades. Of course there are exceptions to this but generally speaking, it seems to be true.

One of the problems with school dress codes is that they are not equal nor enforced equally. For example the boys can't wear short shorts yet the girls can wear mini skirts. Girls can't wear open toe shoes yet boys can wear flip flops. One year they told our kids they weren't allowed to wear anything made by Starter because all their items were considered gang items. Ahhhhhhh hello people we live in a 2 stop light town and have no gangs here. They tried to ban backpacks in the whole system but parents (some county/city officers) went to the school board meeting and asked for proof of gang activity. Golly gee they were trying this new rule because heard other schools had problems. If it were true that being dressed a certain way would make grades improve then I think we'd see more schools making uniforms mandatory. Guess I should make my A/B kids dress in white shirts and blue pants so they are guaranteed to get straight As.

What shouldn't be allowed in school are the sick people that think something as simple as writing on clothes over a specific body part gives them the right to commit a physical act. Is there any statistics proving that pedophiles prefer children with words across the seat of their pants?

Last year, the school I work at (middle school) had prohibited backpacks anywhere but lockers.

I hated enforcing that rule, because it was a PITA. I got all kinds of grief for that one.

We do have a strict two finger width rule on tank tops or back coverings. NO HALTERS!

The other hideous trend is these young girls wearing black glittery T shirts with the Playboy bunny on them.

The asst principal was wandering around a lot carrying T shirts for the kids to wear... they are obnoxious bright GOLD shirts that no one else wears unless they are talked to about thier shirt.

What I hate are all these low rider jeans on girls. At the Friday night high school football game, DH and I happen to sit behind a lot of jr. and sr. high students and all the girl's panties are hanging out the tops of their jeans as they sit in the stands. This may not be the case when they are standing, but just as soon as they sit down - there's all the panties. Of course, always birght colors and I do think they intend to draw attention to their backsides.

It's not (only) about pedaphiles. Of course we ALL know that it's not the clothes worn that make them do what they do.

But why would any parent want to encourage a young girl to look sexy?
You start it now, then wonder what went wrong when they end up pregnant at 15 (or worse).

Sexiness is for adults, not children.

And I'm sorry if you disagree, but most people do agree that low riders and short shorts with or without the words are trying to make girls look sexy. It's just cheap and tacky.

In a perfect world, of course. But we don't live in a perfect world.

I'd prefer not to see young women dress provocatively because I think young women have so much more to offer the world than sexuality. And people don't always see the person behind the dress. They label. In a perfect world, they wouldn't. But they do.

Words on a little girl's butt don't bother me because I'm a woman who looks at children as sweet and innocent. Words on an older girl do strike me as sexual in nature because these girls are developing and it calls attention to their physical development. That, I think, may be the issue. And, no, I don't think it's all that different than rhinestones spelling words across a young woman's chest. If they are developing, it does draw attention.

Does it matter? Does it prove anything? Don't know. But I think school systems are erring on the side of caution. Where children are concerned, I don't think anyone can argue with that.

To me, it has nothing to do with pedophiles. I don't think *anyone* should be looking at anyone's bottom. And it is different from writing on a shirt. I think most people see something written on a shirt and just read it, or probably ignore it even. If it's on the bottom, it just stands out more and it's obvious that you're looking at someone butt.

In WDW this spring I saw a 13/14 yr old girl walk past me wearing a tshirt that had 2 hand prints on the chest and underneath it said "Cant touch this" DW and I were flabbergasted.

I am so glad to see so many people in agreement about wording on girls bottoms is inappropriate.
I posted that a few months ago on a thread and people acted like I was a pedophile for even thinking it was tacky.
Now, that being said, perfectly appropriate Gymboree has a new line that has "Cutie" across the front of a jacket, and a shirt that has "Cute as a button" written on the front it. I was very hesitant to buy the line but finally did as I decided it was not trying to make the girls look sexy in any way and was very childlike.
I read in In Style magazine that low risers pants were OUT and short skirts - OUT, and midriff tops- OUT! Let's keep our fingers crossed this gets to the younger kids.

Well I seem to be in the minority on these boards but DD (15) has shorts with "CHEER" on the butt. She does not wear them to school, not because of the words on the butt but because she is not comfortable wearing Soffee shorts except when she is exercising or practicing. She also wears low cut jeans & the occasional thong!!! Does that make her a "bad" girl - NO! Our school has a very lenient dress code and we don't seem to have many problems and DD goes to the largest high school in Wisconsin. I don't think you can judge kids by what they wear.

FINGERS CROSSED on that one!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to Chuckie Cheese and there was a 13/14 year old with one of those ruffle micro-mini skirts and a very tight tiny, belly bearing tank top and she looked like a prostitute. Very very sad.

Same story when I went to the New England Fair; girls in small mini skirts and tiny tanks or low rise jeans with tiny tanks. So young too. VERY sad. :(
