I Kicked it I Played it and now..Wheeling & Dealing at the WL final 9/9 p87/88

Such beautiful beach pictures! That dog playing in the water is so cute! And those horses are just wild horses roaming the beach??? Amazing! :lovestruc

Its pretty cool to visit a beach that allows dogs. I think that's great. The horses were actually in a separate area of the beach that allows 4 wheel drives. Most people go back there to see the horses or to go fishing. It was pretty cool to share the beach with the horses.

Where the heck have I been that I missed this last set of pictures. I love them all, but I really love the ones of the dog in the water. Just so carefree and having a blast.

They were just some bonus pics I posted. Glad you enjoyed them. I can't wait to make my shutterfly book. I think its going to turn out great! That dog was so cool.

Have some cheddar cheese soup and pretzel bread for me!

I will. I promise. That's what made me so full last time so I couldn't finish my sandwich, but that soup is just so darn good! Love it!

Oh my goodness! What an ordeal at the airport! Thank goodness they let Denny through, and you were able to find your phone!

Yeah - we had a few rough moments and I'm sure Denny said, "Are you gonna put this in your TR". And to think, I almost forgot!

We didn't buy as many souvenirs on this trip as we have on past trips. I think the more times we go, the less we need to take home with us.

!

I agree with you, but next trip I am getting those darn coffee mugs. I want the entire matching set!

Interesting thoughts on Wilderness Lodge. I like the idea of it, but it never seems to quite fit into my theme of the vacation in my mind. Strange, I know. I am going to remember your comment about the resorts, though. I think you are very right in that the resort does not make the trip -- I find it very hard to resist some of them, though.

!

I feel almost embarrassed to admit that I didn't think it was the greatest place ever. I just think my expectations where too high. I am going to keep my expectations realistic from now on. And I will definitely go back again. Its a beautiful place but I just think I like the tropical themed places a bit better.

I think your stomach issues did put a damper on your trip -- how could it not? I hope this trip is much higher on the ten scale!

I didn't feel horrible, but I was really worried that the Evil D was going to keep coming back. That really scared me since it has a high relapse rate and some people get it over and over. That weighed heavy on my mind, but fortunately I am healthy now! :goodvibes

Interesting thoughts...I often think of the WL the same way - it's too "northern" for me. (Even though DH wants to try it - we probably will) I live in MN and we have lots of "cabins" and pine trees, and "wilderness". It doesn't seem like a vacation then. I just prefer tropical themes. I didn't much love BLT either but for the fabulous location. Similar theory I suppose.

I hear ya - if you want to get away from the whole cabin thing, WL may not be the best place although it is beautiful and does have so many great features.

What didn't you like about BLT?

I'm impressed that you could get WL souvenirs! It's so hard to find resort specific stuff now. We could only find pins for Beach Club!

!

I love the shot glass - its a double! How appropriate, considering I couldnt drink while I was there. And the key chain was on sale, so how could I resist?

I can totally understand how this wasn't your "best" trip! the Evil D would not be fun for anyone. Plus no drinking!? And if your traveling companions aren't totally into it, it doesn't quite feel the same, does it?

I'm sure your next trip will be even better - no more illness!

:worship: Thank goodness for no more EVIL D. It was the fear of a 3rd relapse that was really weighing heavy on my mind. I will be taking probiotics for a long time because I swear they have changed my GI health. I think my IBS predisposed me to the EVIL D. that and the fact that I had been taking Nexium for a year. That cuts acid in the stomach and actually makes it easy for some bacteria to overgrow. My gut was completely out of wack before I got sick and I didn't realize it.

What a fiasco at the airport! I'm glad you made it through eventually...and with all your belongings.

Yeah - it was the true definition of "airport stress".

I appreciate your honest reviews of everything! I fell in love with the WL, which completely surprised me....I had the exact opposite reaction as you did. :rotfl: I thought it was a nice break in the constant tropical themeing everywhere....I could enjoy the tropical outside of the WL and then escape to another land when we arrived back at the resort. I loved the darkness and coolness of it all.

That's an interesting way to look at it. I had the same reaction to AKL. I didn't think I would like it as much as I did, but I feel immediately in love with it.

And that is one of the MANY awesome things about Disney - there is something for EVERYONE! Love that.

I agree - each resort is so unique and full of its own special magic.

And that Evil D had to definitely put a damper on the trip...it is NO fun to be sick in Disney. :sad2:

The EVIL D was not fun. Not that I felt that sick, but more because I was afraid it was going to turn into a long term battle. I am so glad that's behind me!

Great wrap-up! Sorry the trip was "just" a 6.5 on the scale but I think we'd all take a 6.5 in WDW than a regular day at home! :lmao: The stomach issues must have put a damper on things and I totally get what you mean about wanting your party to love it as much as you do. It gets frustrating when they don't. And I've already exhausted you with my thoughts on WL. I hadn't considered the tropical angle... interesting. I will say WL has a different, perhaps "more appropriate" feel at Christmas. At least to a New Englander.

.

So - a 6.5 in Disney IS better than a 10 in the regular world! :thumbsup2

Yes - I do wish Chuck and Cathy had fallen in love with it. But they had a good time and I felt good about sharing DVC with them, so it was worth it for all of us.

Definitely a better feel at Christmas. From now on I am calling it the Christmas resort!

Your upcoming trip sounds exciting. ADRs look great.

.

Its funny that I am eating at the Wave again - 3rd time, but Jen wanted to try it and we ARE staying right there so it sure is convenient. I have never tried Garden Grill and probably wouldn't normally pick it, but Jen says she loves it and I do like catfish so I'm in!

Hope you will be posting your kitchen renovation pics as the project gets off the ground. I still haven't decided what to do about mine.

I will take pictures during the process, but I think I will wait until its almost done to post pictures. Seriously, I do not want anyone to see how hideous my current counter top is. Its seriously as bad as they come and I am NOT exaggerating. Looking forward to granite!

What didn't I like about BLT?

Well, the theme - I know it's supposed to "go with" the Contemporary, but it didn't appeal to me. It felt kind of boring, too much like a normal hotel room. I see where others would like it, but it's a personal taste thing I guess.
The layout of the studio: The bathroom sink is in a galley hallway type area with the kitchenette! Whose dumb idea is that? Do I want someone brushing their teeth or worse yet, hair next to where I am preparing food/drink?? Ah, no. Plus then you're bumping butts with the other person. It's not that roomy.
The bathroom door is a slider with no lock, no latch, no way to keep it 100% closed. There is always a gap.
When the sofabed is opened, it's pretty cramped to walk around and go to the balcony.
I realize it is one of the smaller DVC studios in terms of square footage. For 4 people, it was cramped feeling. I think it would be great for 2.

That being said, I really loved the location, walking to/from MK, the pool area, walking to Contemporary to shop and eat across the bridge was cool. Plus we paid for a lake view, and we were so much to the side all we had to do was look left to see MK.

We were there on a cash reservation (military discount) so we could not use the Top of the World Lounge, which would have been so cool!

I'm glad you made those comments about buying DVC. We sort of jumped in quickly, and I've been sort of nervous about it!! We are starting small, and will wait a while to add on a contract that makes sense (price and use year and resort - wise). I am enjoying checking the resale market and doing research. (I'm sort of a research geek - I do a lot for my job too!)

Love your final thoughts and last round of pictures. Good luck with the kitchen project. I'm sure your counters can't be any worse than what my parents had for about 20 years - bright orange laminate!!! With harvest gold appliances!!! Dark wood cabinets, oh, it was a beauty!!! Total 70s kitchen.

Great wrap up, Mary Ellen. Now, on to the PTR as your trip is right around the corner.

Thanks Kathy! I am going to keep my PTR stuff right here and then link this to my TR when I get back. It seems most logical!

BTW - I need to get on over to your PTR and see what's new. I know Mark gets his angio soon so I will be sending the positive energy in your direction!

I really enjoyed your TR with all of the side trips. I know what you mean about having a 6.5 experience. Our trip in September left me a little disappointed. I guess that it was the high temps & the crowds that were unexpected.

Anyway, I'm ready to go again & envy your going soon. I have to wait another year.:sad2:

Thanks! I am so glad you stayed and followed to the end.

Unexpected high crowds and high temps are really a bummer. I had a trip like that one August. It was crazy busy and there were people EVERYWHERE. I resorted to extra pool time and evening park time.

I hope the next year goes fast for you. Sometimes planning is the best part, though!

Enjoyed the wrap up and your honest thoughts.

Sorry or the trouble on your return flight. That airport is so crowded in the security area, that alone would throw me into a tizzy.

Looking forward to your next trip report.

I am so glad you enjoyed the TR. Thanks for sticking with me until the end. The airport trouble was a drag, but we didn't panic so that made it a lot mor tolerable.

Just think, I may be in Disney two weeks from now, but in 3 weeks I'll be doing another TR.

Great final thoughts Mary Ellen :goodvibes I so enjoyed meeting you and Denny (he was fun to try and locate :rotfl2:) and your friends. I had a great time each time our paths crossed

Thanks Tracy. It was so fun to hang out with you! Will you be there next May again? If my soccer mom friends don't want to go, I am still going to plan a trip in May. I'm not sure if I'll stay DVC or just go for an AP rate at one of the values, but I am definitely going back and I'm looking at the weekend of May 14th when the DISmoms descend.

I know what you are saying about wanting your friends to be happy/love it like you do...it is hard playing Tracy travel guide  I will see how this next trip goes....hopefully we will enjoy the drinks for F&W so all should be good! :drinking1

Tracy travel guide - love it! I am so glad that I won't be a travel guide this trip because Jen probably knows Disney better than I do! :goodvibes

I laughed right aloud about never banking points...on the DVC boards people always have banking questions.....I think I only banked once!!! :rotfl2: I :lovestruc my DVC too!!

Well once is one time more than I have banked. My first trip was like 310 pts so I have been in the hole ever since, but what difference does it make. :confused3 I am just gonna keep on borrowing! That's what they're there for.

Oh my goodness, Denny and the license!

GREAT recap and final thoughts, I love the summaries and ratings and the explanation behind them.

You'll have to wait till you get back to hear my final thoughts on WL. :rotfl: we haven't even gotten to the airport yet1

!

Thanks - glad you liked my final thoughts! I am very curious to see what you thought of the WL and if you thought it felt a little forced or fake, too. I mean, come on, you LIVE in the Pacific NW. But if I have to wait until December to hear your final thoughts, so be it!

I know it's overwhelming but it will all be worth it!

At least I feel like we have a plan! :thumbsup2

You are gonna LOVE it!!!! It's sooooooo much fun.

I just hope its going to be dark. sunset is 735pm that night (I checked) - so how long does it take to get dark after that or does that mean the sun is totally gone at 735pm. I know its a dumb question, but I really don't know the true definition of sunset.

You had a lot of trouble getting a good contract, right? You've been scoping the resales for a while? Seems like it just was never working out...so sounds like it wasn't meant to be and the kitchen is! That's a great thing. There will always be contracts and more points to buy next year! :thumbsup2

I

For the longest time I could not find a great contract and then when I did I realized that I have to prioritize and go with the kitchen first. and you are right - there will always be new contracts and points to buy!

Y

I love that your oven is the same as the one in CoP! Too bad it doesn't talk. :rotfl: Good thing it doesn't go to 999 degrees though!!!! I'll always think of you during that scene now. :goodvibes

Yes - its a GE and doesn't GE sponsor that ride. Seriously, it looks identical except they modified it to put in the digital display. Cracked me up the first time I saw it, too.

Please do think of me when you ride it!!!!

Mary Ellen, I appreciated your Final Thoughts on your trip. Very well thought-out and expressed.

Thanks for posting your trip experiences and taking us along! It was a lot of fun, and the pictures were great.

Thanks Glenn. So happy that you joined my TR and I hope you come back for the next one. Glad you liked the pictures!

Good night all. Tonight two weeks from now Jen and I will probably have made it back to BLT after AK and Y&Y dinner. Who knows, we might be back up at the TOWL lounge for round 2!

I had heard about the BLT bathroom door, which I think is really strange. It doesn't sound very private. I know the studio is not ideal, but I am going to make the best out of it. I will probably be on the pull out, so I'm OK with that. I just hope I don't wake up Jen when I get up to make coffee and go for my run. I'll just have to make sure I lay out my stuff carefully so I make as little noise as possible. I am pretty psyched for the location!

I think that's a bummer that only DVc members on point can go up to the lounge. I guess its supposed to be a DVC perk.

I'm glad you made those comments about buying DVC. We sort of jumped in quickly, and I've been sort of nervous about it!! Don't be nervous. You will love it. You will just want more points. That is something I am sure of. Its good to keep your eye on the resale market so you stay well educated on current pricing.

:rotfl2: Yeah - um, your right, my counter top is not THAT bad, but I gotta tell you it is really, really close. :rotfl2: That whole description is hysterical. It sounds like the Brady Bunch kitchen. Oy!

Glad you enjoyed the final thoughts and my pics!

Great final post Mary Ellen! I think I feel the same way as you do....I didn't love AKL because it was dark and I thought it was because we had stayed at SSR first and I loved it there so much!!!

can't wait to read your new PTR!!!!

It won't be December, I will probably post a resort recap at each move day and then a summary at the end (at least that's my thoughts now).

But it also won't be before you go, and come back! :rotfl:

I didn't think I would like AKL for that reason, but I actually loved it. Still, its been two years since I have stayed at SSR so I do miss it and I want to go back soon. It really is a pretty resort. I don't care what the naysayers say!

So not even a hint? You aren't even going to give me one teeny, tiny hint about your WL thoughts? arrrrrrgggh!

Great final thoughts and wrap-up! Thanks so much for doing the trip report (and mini TRs within)! I'm looking forward to hearing about your next trip!

Sounds like a good plan, Mary Ellen.

Tomorrow -- 8 a.m. (we have to be at the hospital at 6 a.m.)

Fabulous final thoughts MaryEllen!!!

OMG with the problems getting through security at MCO! You guys must have been so nervous! I'm glad you made it and found your phone!

I think it's fabulous that you can admit to yourself, and us, that your trip wasn't exactly as magical as you had hoped!

I totally get what your saying about WL, and you know I love, love, love WL! I can see it seeming out of place and a reach to some people. In all honesty, my sister is dying to stay there. I have this secret fear that it won't live up to how fabulous she thinks it is!

I also understand being done with DDP! I started out planning our Oct trip with the deluxe plan! I changed it to the regular plan and didn't add it to the second part of our stay! Being tied down all the time is getting a little old!

I can't wait to hear about your stay at BLT! Did I tell you how excited I am to be staying there?! ;) I also can't wait to hear about TOW lounge, especially because we may not be able to use it :headache:

I thoroughly enjoyed your final thoughts Mary Ellen! I am glad you were honest about what you thought of WL, some resorts are a better fit for some people!! I have to agree about keeping your expectations real, I'm trying to do that for my stay at Boardwalk!

Ughh about the airport situation! Glad you got your phone!!!!

I'm so excited to read about your PTR plans!!!! GIDDY I tell you!!!!!

I really enjoyed reading your final thoughts, Mary Ellen. But, so sorry that you had to endure such a mess at the airport!

I've always loved the look and feel of the WL, I like that it is different. Of course, I haven't stayed there yet, my feelings may change once I do. At least Disney has a wide range of resorts, to appeal to all different tastes - one of the many reasons we all love it there!

I'll be looking forward to reading about your plans for your upcoming trip :thumbsup2

Fabulous final thoughts MaryEllen!!!

Good thing we didn't get there at the last possible minute like we usually do! :rolleyes1

:

I am pretty much a realist so I will admit when something is less than perfect.

Seeming like a Reach - that's a good explanation. The first morning I was there I went out on the balcony and was surrounded by lots of evergreen trees. I said to Denny, "i could almost pretend I am in New England". To that he replied, "Yeah if it wasn't for the trash compactor".

Illusion ruined, never to be recaptured. Darn that Denny.

I do hope you get to have a DVC stay there sometime.

I also understand being done with DDP! I started out planning our Oct trip with the deluxe plan! I changed it to the regular plan and didn't add it to the second part of our stay! Being tied down all the time is getting a little old!

EXACTLY - I mean looking forward and experiencing special dinners is an important part of the trip, but when you are sitting at Ohana and can't wait to get out of there because you have already been there 2 hours....well...light bulb moment....maybe its time for a change!

I can't wait to hear about your stay at BLT! Did I tell you how excited I am to be staying there?! ;) I also can't wait to hear about TOW lounge, especially because we may not be able to use it :headache:

I did just read that on Sheree's TR that you can 't go up there unless you are staying on points. But I had planned on taking Marc and LL up there as my guests so I REALLY hope that's OK. I can't imagine its THAT exclusive.

I thoroughly enjoyed your final thoughts Mary Ellen! I am glad you were honest about what you thought of WL, some resorts are a better fit for some people!! I have to agree about keeping your expectations real, I'm trying to do that for my stay at Boardwalk!

I'm so glad you enjoyed my TR Jen! I do appreciate that there are so many resorts to chose from and there really is something for everyone. I feel so fortunate to have been able to try so many different resorts.

Ughh about the airport situation! Glad you got your phone!!!!

I'm so excited to read about your PTR plans!!!! GIDDY I tell you!!!!!

If I had lost my phone I definitely would have had to drop my trip rating to 5.5.

I need to write some PTR plans, don't I? I don't understand why I am so bad at PTRs. I think its because I am not nearly as organized as a lot of other people are.

I really enjoyed reading your final thoughts, Mary Ellen. But, so sorry that you had to endure such a mess at the airport!

Well, it was really our own faults for being so disorganized. At least everything worked out OK. ;)

I've always loved the look and feel of the WL, I like that it is different. Of course, I haven't stayed there yet, my feelings may change once I do. At least Disney has a wide range of resorts, to appeal to all different tastes - one of the many reasons we all love it there!

When I planned my second on site trip (long before DVC) I wanted to stay there so bad. I thought it was the perfect resort for me. Then when we ate there last September all I could think about was staying there. Then I got there and, well, I lost those feelings. I must just be fickle!

I'll be looking forward to reading about your plans for your upcoming trip :thumbsup2

coming up!~

I'm slightly annoyed by this! From what I understand the lounge is DEAD most of the time! My understanding of it is that as long as you booked through DVC MS and your key to the world card says DVC on it you can go up. I do plan on pleading my case as a DVC member who was dumb enough to pay cash for the room to get it :lmao:

BTW, there's a rumor going around that early construction has begun on a new DVC resort over in the area that River Country used to be! The interesting part, aside from another DVC resort, is that it supposed to be like a wild west theme! LOL! Talk about a reach!

Perhaps a DVC cash reservation is different. I will definitely try to ask around when I am there. Naturally, I will probably get a bunch of different answers, but who knows, I might get the right one.

I have heard its dead up there a lot, too. I know when Ellen was up there last November - DEAD!

Interesting. Well, isn't one of the resorts in DLP a wild west theme? This must be a draw for certain people. You already know I prefer palm trees!

........if all goes as planned:

I will be leaving Philadelphia at 1pm to arrive at my favorite airport and be wisked away by ME to ........

Of course, I won't be wearing a sweat shirt and the Christmas decorations won't be there.

Jen and I have no firm plans for the evening, but we are thinking about checking in, getting slightly unpacked (since we will only be there one night) and heading off to........

DTD

Disney2007021.jpg

Disney2007020.jpg

I don't have any updated pictures of DTD, but you get the idea.

Chances are we will be thirsty and hungry so I plan on hitting the margarita stand and doing a little shopping. Then I think we may need to do a little eating. Not sure where yet. We are winging it. I ate at WPE last trip so I'm thinking Earl of Sandwich and Cynthia suggested Reglan Road.

I like the idea of having no firm plans. Hey, if we are REALLY starving we will just eat at the food court.

The plans for the rest of our evening are pretty loose. I think its going to be DTD and then hang at the resort. I like this idea. I love walking about POR and FQ and taking pictures. I love taking the boat and I haven't been on that boat since our first on site family trip in 2003.

So.......how did this trip come to be??????

Well, Jen is my coworker. We both work in a cardiacsurgical program at a small hospital. Jen decided to go back to Physician Assistant school in September. So, joking I said to her, "How are you going to start school and NOT go to Disney for 2 years? I'll go with you in September before you start."

On my way home Jen sent me a text later that day saying she reserved BLT, lake view, 60 points September 12th - 16th. I started to laugh out loud, but I knew that the wheels were already set in motion. All I had to do was check with Denny who reluctantly agreed. That, of course, was before we knew I would be traveling to both NY and Tenn with Brian this summer.

Jen made the reservation slightly before 180 days, so we had about a week to figure out ADR's. We settled on the following......

Sunday Sept 12th - The Wave
Monday Sept 13th - Garden Grill
Tuesday Sept 14th - Le Cellier (lunch)
Wednesday Sept 15th - Yak & Yeti

Jen has never eaten at Le Cellier or the Wave. I have never eaten at Garden Grill or Yak & Yeti.

So how did we end up adding the extra night......Well, I am sure you are all familiar with the falling airline price add a night phenomenon. SWA dropped their Sept 11th flight price to $79. The earlier flight did not have that price, so we went with the 1pm flight. That actually works well for me because I don't sleep well (or at all) when I have to get up super early.

I will admit, I was originally a little reluctant to fly on 9/11, but saving 40 or 50 bucks helped quell those fears. And I will miss my kids first soccer game of the season, but I will get to the rest so I don't think they really care.

So what have I done to get ready for this trip - well, I am about 1/2 packed. I will finish the rest on Monday. And I actually ordered a couple things for this trip. On everyone's recommendation (esp Melissa's) I ordered a pair of the Teva Mush sandals. They didn't quite qualify for free shipping so I was "forced" to order a Mickey wallet (it actually looks like a small pocket book). I really hope I like it when I get. I will post pics when it arrives.

I have also been hitting all the end of summer sales at Kohls, Boscovs, and Pennys so I have stocked up on some new shirts and one pair of new shorts. I love pulling the tags off of new clothes when I get to Disney.

So, that's about it for now. I have tons to do today but I'll be bck soon with more PTR stuff.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to my eat, drink, and be merry list. I will go back, edit, and repost that incase anyone has more suggestions for my "must do" list!

Hurray for the two weeks' posts!!! You are going to have such a fun time going with a friend and exploring POFQ and DTD on your first day!!!

Yay!!! Your trip is so close!!

I've never eaten there but another potential DTD dinner option might be that Paradiso 37. It looks like they have a really nice outdoor patio.

Don't you just love that Lego dragon? I smile everytime I see it.

And yes you MUST stop at the Margarita stand. For sure one of my favorite places in the World.

I think you will love the Teva Mush! :thumbsup2

Hurray for the two weeks' posts!!! You are going to have such a fun time going with a friend and exploring POFQ and DTD on your first day!!!

I  POFQ. When Denny and I stayed there for a night we had to make a shopping run to pick up a belt (he left his in the airport), so we didn't really get back to our room until it was dark. I want to walk around in the daylight!

Yay!!! Your trip is so close!!

It's funny that you mention Paradiso 37 because I remember Jen saying she wanted to try that place. I think that's a great idea!

I love it and I can't wait to get some updated marketplace pictures! I haven't been there in quite a while.

I just ordered a plain black pair so they will go with everything, but they had some many cute ones to choose from. I can't wait for them to arrive. they were shipped a few days ago!
