I just got a phone call telling me I won a free hotel stay at the Mont-Tremblant ski resort, as well as a free security system for my home. The guy on the phone said I filled out a ballot at a wedding show, but I don't remember doing that. He wanted to come by tomorrow because he needs a copy of my driver's liscence. I asked what the catch was and he said there is none.

I'm thinking there's something shady going on and I don't think the vacation is worth the trouble, but I just wanted to get other's opinions. Does this sound legit to you?

ETA I warned my doorman today not to let anyone up to my apartment unless he recognized them. I called and left a message saying I refused the "prize" but I had a bad feeling. The contest guy actually came by this afternoon! The doorman kicked him out and threatened to call the police. I'm so glad my building already has a great security system! I'm calling the police tomorrow to report this company.

Absolutely not.

They are probably trying to sell you a security system contract; the system is free, but upgrades to the system and the monthly maintenance are your responsibility.

If something is too good to be true it usually is....

No such thing as a free lunch....

I'm sure there are several more - just can't think of them now.

Come by for a copy of your driver's license? No way. And see your house and talk about your current security situation....ah, no...and see what is in your house...and get valuable identification information from you which will allow him to probably steal your identity....

No. Not legit at all!

I hate to tell ou, but yeah, I think this is a scam. We have "won" these kinds of things before. If you're lucky, they'll just try to get you to py a "nominal" fee before the vacation. If you're not, then as soon as he has your driver's license, he'll also have credit cards and any number of other things, all in your name.

I think you are being scamed! I won a trip lastyear through ABC, yes it was a Magical Gathering's for 8 to WDW. I did not have to show my driver's license, etc. However I did have to provide info to ABC, SS# etc. and trust me I did have to pay the taxes on that trip. No one has to come to your house, the man is going to get there and try to sell you an alarm system...

Did you ask what the name of the company was?? I'd try looking them up

I have won lots of "free vacations", all I had to do was tour a time share, etc.
However here is a BIG WARNING!!!! There is a scan right now out of Canada. A young woman "$60,000" in a lottery. She called and spoke with a man in Canada who gave her instructions, his phone number, etc. All she had to do was pay an initial tax payment of $1500. But, they sent her what appeared to be a $3500 cashiers check drawn on an American bank. In Kansas, I think. When she called the automatic check verification service it verified as a legitimate, real check with funds behind it. She proceeded through the menu and asked to speak to a person because she was still worried. When a live person at the bank investigated, the check was a fraud. She would have deposited it. It would have cleared initially, she would have written the check for $1500 and been out of the money and have to reimburse her bank. It may have also given the perpetrators access to her bank number. The Atty General, Richard Blumenthal is investigating and warning people. It is a major problem and originates in Canada. Your "free vacation" could be a twist on this scam. Be Careful!!!

Call your local police department. They may be aware of similar calls in your area. If not, they can give you good advice.

Scam. Free stay? What, one night? Three? So for the cost of a hotel room, they get to sell you a security system. Great advertising scheme.

Ask him to send you a copy of your winning entry to your work address (or someone else's) and then you'll talk. If he has to come out 'right away', it's a scam and just give him your police station's address.

Sounds creepy to me! I would never give out my home address, let a stranger in my home and then give him my ID!!! Check out the RCMP PhoneBusters website for scam information. But this guy sounds dangerous - I would call the police.

If he turns out to be just a salesman with bad tactics:

The free resort stay will be for a time-share presentation. Won't be worth your time - low season is starting so you can get a hotel for a reasonable amount now anyway.

Security system is free - but you'll have to lock into a long expensive contract for their monitoring services.

Definitely a scam.. Do not reveal ANY information to this shady character!

Anytime someone calls selling you a security system, you should always say you already have one, thanks anyways.

Just saying you're not interested, or don't need one, or maybe later, just lets them know you don't have one.

And if they send you away for the weekend, they'll know you're not home.

wow.. if this guy has to come over your house to discuss all that.. it has to be a scam

doesn't he have an office?

especially if you dont even remember doing some sorta ballot

they probably just got your phone number out of nowhere

be careful!! dont let him in!!

theres no such thing as a free vacation!

I guess my instincts were right then. I was just going to blow it off but maybe calling the police is a good idea. A lot of telemarketing scams originate from the city where I live :guilty:

I already won the "free" timeshare vacation a few days ago. I can't wait to see what I "win" next week
