I just don't enjoy working

There, I said it. I don't enjoy having a job. I've tried lots of different things and never found anything that I enjoyed for long. I'm so fortunate to have an understanding DH who makes decent money and benefits so I can job hop all I like but it doesn't seem to help. We don't have kids so being a SAHM is out and I guess I could stay home but if he gets no OT then it would be a pretty lean week. I hate to work him to death so I can indulge myself. What I'd really like is something I can do from home that I can set my own hours for. I'm considering taking a medical terminology class so that I can do transcription from home though I'm not sure how I'd go about getting clients for that. Does anyone do that? How did you get started? I like the freedom of staying home. I like getting up when I want, staying up late and doing things in my own way and in my own time. I like being able to do what I want when I want. I'm a LOUSY sales person so things like Avon, Tupperware or Party Lite are out. I even tried an eBay business but I'm not too good at finding things to sell. I've sold everything that's not nailed down in the house already!!

My FIL who owns a home cleaning franchise said the other day that so many people don't want to work, they just want a paycheck. I kept my mouth shut but thought, DUH, if I didn't have to have a paycheck I wouldn't be working either. Am I just a complete freak here? What's the key to finding happiness in your job when you'd really rather just be a housewife? I'm not lazy, I just don't enjoy the daily routine thing and I hate dealing with annoying people and bosses who resemble diapers!

I understand completely. I'd stay home in a heartbeat if I could. I did take 6 months off work at one point and my ex was shocked to find the clothes that he had worn the day before washed, folded, and put back in the dresser! I'm a regular little Susie Homemaker when I get the chance and I love it. I hang out with DD, clean, do crafts, read, make elaborate meals--I'm never bored. Sometimes I just wish it were the 50's when women could actually stay home and do this.

Oh, well, maybe someday I'll win the lottery. Till then, though...I'll just have to tough it out!

Just wanted to say that I love your user name LOL

Thanks. It's my DH's nickname for me and I thought it was so unique. I'd never heard that one before.

I completely agree with you! I hate the daily routine, getting up at a certain time and being told what to do. I am exactly like you. Luckily I get to stay home. When DH and I met we knew we wanted kids and that I would stay home. He knows how I feel about working!!LOL Luckily he has a great job so I don't need to work. BUT, believe me staying home with the kids is more demanding!! I thought I would have the life being able to stay home with the kids, doing things at my own pace. NOT!!! Everything I do is at their pace!!LOL. Sleep, LOL, what's that???!! I have to get up when they do, which is always 7am. Forget about a straight nights sleep. Cleaning, washing, cooking, wipping butts!!:p It never ends. I work 24hrs. a day 7 days a week and don't get paid!! They are the best thing in the world and I wouldn't change a thing. I just wanted you to know the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Ideally staying home without kids, now ya talkin!!!

I would say if you can, keep trying until you find what you like. I know you said you're not good at sales, but how about being a realtor. You could work part time, set your own hours. Or, how about a hobby you can turn into a job? Like my friend who loves to knit, I tell her all the time people would pay big bucks for her blankets, she doesn't listen. You get what I mean. I hope you find something that works for you. Oh, and you are NOT a freak!!

I'm with you; I just really work for the benefits, and a little extra money.

This kind of comment always reminds me of my favorite line from Drew Carey:
"So you hate work, hey. They a support group for that, it's called everyone, and they meet at the bar.":p

OMG!

I couldn't agree with you more. It's not that I don't like working, I just prefer doing things I like on my own time....lol.

Let me explain: Like you, I think I just don't want to do the same thing day after day after day, even if it's not EXACTLY the same thing. I just don't like it, and maybe that's because of WHERE I currently work. (Which is why I'm currently in the HUNT, big time!) I keep thinking that my next job will be the one I love and never want to leave.

On the other hand, I have enjoyed volunteering, doing both office work and in a classroom. I guess it's just cause it's not so much of the responsibility. *shrugs*

(Please take the next comment as a lighthearted statement....I mean not to offend any of the feminists at the Dis, nor am I ungrateful for the opportunities of our generation.)

My friends and I have often had the conversation where we "lament" the opportunities afforded to women today. Why do we all have to be so darn ambitious, we ask ourselves! How nice it would be to have lived 50 years ago when "all" women had to do was maintain a good home and be pretty! (I say that, of course, VERY tongue in cheek...)

If it's any consolation, my grand plan is to publish my first novel (which will probably not be my GREAT work), scrounge around with the (small) profits, and then write my masterpiece so that I can work from home for the rest of my life. I'm 15 chapters in so far.

Have you ever played the "What would you do if you had a million dollars?" game? I was getting more and more miserable at my "Office Space" job, and asked myself the question. The immediate answer was, "Work at the mall." (Yes, I enjoy retail - I'm a lunatic.) The budget won't allow me to work forever for seven bucks an hour, but I quit the job that was driving me nuts and took a part time job at the mall to get the experience to get into retail management, which does pay enough to meet the budget. (In the meantime, I'm compromising by temping so that I don't have to live in a van down by the river!)

Anyway, the point is, there must be something you enjoy. If you like to cook, join - or start! - a catering business. If your special martini recipe is your pride and joy, get a part time bartending job. Etc., etc., etc. :)

You need to find something you can be passionate about, but first you have to know what it is!

Back in Illinois our community college had a course you could take to help you evaluate where your strengths were and what type of studies, and eventually work, you would best be suited for. Helped me find out more about myself.

Check your local college for something similar. :teacher:

Best wishes and good luck.

Honestly, I think EVERYONE would love doing things when they want, getting up when they want, etc etc. But that's not how life is, and we all just can't do that because its more fun. Those that are independantly wealthy have these options, but the normal American just doesn't.

I am sorry you're so frustrated... just know that you're not alone, many people never find a passion in which they can make a living off of it, and we all struggle together each day at work.

I do it. :)

I work in a school so I get summers off, a week at Thanksgiving, a week at Christmas, personal days and a bunch of sick days. Oh and spring break too. Summer gives me time to get my projects done and usually by Sept. I'm ready to get back to the kids. Working with 7th graders is never boring. OK maybe sometimes it is, like next year will be my 3rd year in the same Science class.

Hi, my name is Kater and I share half a brain with M. ;) Except I didn't know I loved retail until I started. I just love books, so applied for a job at a bookstore. And I found my niche. (And, as an added bonus, I get to sleep in, since the earliest I need to be at work is 9 am!)

Find something you love and do it!

Oh, or I can ship you the boxes of stuff I need to sell on eBay. :teeth:

I don't mind the actual work itself. I like to stay busy and be creative and make things better for people. What I can't stand are the rigid hours, the idiotic bosses I've had and the whole back-stabbing corporate environment. If I could just go in somewhere and get things done without being hassled, then I could see liking work.

Until then I'll wait to win the lottery too. :)

I just wanted to add to the vacation thing. Sometimes it helps to have a goal to work for. Plan a nice vacation, and when you get down about work, remember that you are saving for the vacation. It is a good motivator.
