After all these years of NEVER having problems with my dental history, these darn wisdom teeth had to arrive . . .I have 2 out of the 4 . . .the two bottom ones exist, the top two never showed up . . .I guess it means I only have 1/2 wisdom? LOL

Well, I wasn't going to have them removed until now that my left lower one has a cavity that can't be filled because it's underneath that flappy part of the gum . . .dentist said "nice try"

So first thing tomorrow morning I have to make an appointment with the oral surgeon and get these 2 suckers out . . .

I was going to have a local anestetic, but DH convinced me to be put asleep . . .said I wouldn't have to see the tools coming at me or the slicing and yanking  How do these surgeons know how much anesthesia I'm going to need? I can see it now, I'll be all loopy for days.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. All 4 of my wisdom teeth were turned AND impacted, and I had to have all of them cut out when I was 12 YEARS OLD!!! Yeah, I know, they're doing it when you're younger now.

I would agree to be put to sleep. I was for my surgery, and believe me, you'll be glad for it!!

Good luck!!! I would highly reconsider doing the local though. I did that for mine (mostly a straight pull, except they did a tiny cut on the bottom to prevent tearing). I am so very happy I did. They don't use many tools and I was totally numb. I was up and running as soon as I took a nap (I had a very very early appt. after being up very late the night before with college friends). I was not woozy or sick or anything after and it made the recovery sooooo much nicer. I assume that if they gave you teh choice that it must be similar to what mine were... really more of a straight pull (not impacted or twisted) But no matter what don't worry, it isn't as bad as you think :)

Had all four of mine out at once. 2 were pulled and 2 top ones had to be cut out. I did the local, no gas for me. I couldn't see anything coming at me. It wasn't scary at all. The most you'll feel is the needles for numbing. They stuck me several times for each tooth but it wasn't that bad. I wish you luck and hope all goes well.

I had two wisdom teeth out and gum surgery later. I had a local for both and also some happy gas as I call it. The oral surgeon could have pulled all of my teeth after I breathed some of that stuff, I didn't care a bit!

I had 3 of my wisdom teeth removed in September of last year. I had the other one removed a few years ago. I'm wisdomless.;) It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.:) The first day I was kinda loopy from the pain meds.:o The dentist put stitches in my gums to help them heal faster, and that gave me more problems than anything. I whined about that pain for about a week or a week and a half.;) I thought the area was abcessed. The dentist told me to buy a bulb syringe and squirt warm water on the stitches to help keep them clean. That felt wonderful.:)

Good luck in achieving only half wisdom.:)

I had 8 teeth removed at one time back in February - 4 wisdoms and 4 pre-molars. 2 of the wisdoms were impacted, and two were barely showing. Well, unlike all the other posters here, the extractions were HORRIBLE!!! I had many complications (dry socket, nerve damage, hole between sinus cavity and mouth) and general PAIN. I was very sick for about a week, and had to miss a week of work and basically stayed in bed. I was awake for the surgery, as it was $350 cheaper than being put to sleep. What a motivation!

I'm so glad everyone else here had such a easy time, but not me - tooth extractions hurt!!!!!!!!!! :(

But hey - hopefully you'll be one of the lucky ones! :teeth:

I was put to sleep. I did not want anything to do with it. My mouth hurt for a couple days and was swollen. Not fun! No problems with the KO though.

I had one of my wisdom teeth pulled about a mth ago. My jaw bone still hasn't recovered fully. It felt like he knocked it out of joint for about 4 days. I wasn't put to sleep but if I could do it over again I would of. The OS I went to I have been to before and he has never caused me pain but this was different. I had major pain for about a week and lived on Codine.
Oh and btw if anyone read my thread on my dentist and my root canal I finally got it done today. Geez I hate dentist !

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm taking my DD in a couple of hours to have all four of her impacted wisdom teeth removed. She is very nervous. They are putting her to sleep. If anyone wants, I'll post the results later, let you know how it went.

**UPDATE**

My appointment is Tuesday, May 27th at 3pm . . .I am going to have the local instead of the loopy gas . . .Unfortunately my insurance company only covers local and not the gas, so I will have to grin and bare it (no pun intended).

I probably will do fine . . .hopefully it'll be a pretty quick procedure and a really easy recovery . . .

On the upside, maybe I'll lose a couple pounds! :D

There is no way I'd have that done while awake!  But then I have always wanted to be put out for a cavity. I'm a chicken when it comes to my teeth.

Don't worry about having just the local... as I said I had that before with mine and it was very easy and very quick. I am sure it'll be over before you know it. I know with mine, it took more time for the local to 'take effect' than it did for the pulling and two tiny stitches I had. Best of luck to you as you go through it and I am sure with the local you will have a quicker and easier recovery :) Although the bad news is that if it goes as well as mine did, you will probably not lose any weight. Let us know how it goes!

When I had my wisdom teeth pulled as a young adult, I was put out. The Oral Surgeon recommended it. After the procedure was done he told me I was one of the 10 worst cases of impaction he had seen in his whole career. I am glad he didn't tell me that before or I would have never had done it.. He wasn't a young Dr. either.

Apparently my wisdom teeth were growing sideways and down instead of up. My 12 year molars never came in either. I had to have few of those pulled later as they were behind and under my 6 year molars.. They said I have small jaw.. Anyway, I was in agony for over a week, but with no complications so I can only imagine what the extraction was like. The Dr. said it took over an hour and 1/2.. Personally I won't have teeth extracted without being put out, but if yours are not really complicated I am sure the local will be fine. I have had 4 root canals with local and survived it just fine..

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth out under local. I was pretty much loopy from the gas and I remember thinking "wow I have to remember this feeling to tell my friends!". Actually I think I fell asleep at some point because before I knew it I was almost done.
The oral surgeon was great and the nurses were funny.

I work for an oral surgeon and most people do a local if they are having one or two wisdom's removed. Of course if you are older and the roots are hooked I would recommend the GAS ;) For all four wisdoms people usually want to be out. Unfortunately most insurance companies will only pay for the gas if you are having all four wisdoms removed, they don't seem to think less than four is all that difficult (but since it isn't them having them removed it's easy for them to say!). NONE of the insurance companies pay for nitrous, they consider that a complete and total extra that nobody should need. Not that anyone here has ever done drugs I'm sure, but if you've ever done them the nitrous will NOT work for you. If the doctor is good, he/she should be doing a consult before he pulls them and he/she can tell you if it seems necessary to do a GA (general anesthesia/gas) for your particular case. The consult is also a good time to see if your surgeon has what we call "soft hands" which makes a HUGE difference in the soreness of your jaw after surgery. A lot of times it's more from the surgeon being hard on your mouth than from the extractions! If you decide on a GA please please please follow the instructions to fast! A guy we did this morning lied about it and after the surgeory barfed up orange juice all over the floor! Yuuucccckkkkk!!!!!! Also, follow the instructions about smoking before and after, a lot of the dry socket cases are from someone smoking before they are supposed to, it also prevents you from forming a clot so you bleed longer. Good luck! Hope everything goes okay.

{{{HUGS}}} and I hoping that things will go smoothly for you!

Don't worry...I had mine out with a local and it wasn't that big of a deal. I've had just about every known procedure including root canals, oral surgery, posts, caps...you name it, seems I've had it and NEVER had a problem or much pain. Wisdom teeth were a breeze compared to having all of my front teeth capped at once! You'll do fine...sit back...count backwards from ten (you'll get to about 8) and the next thing you know, you're awake being led to the car!

Just to clarify.......a local is just the needle in the area of the tooth to be worked on, you can add N20 (Nitrous/happy juice) to that which will make you feel a little goofy. To be put to sleep (which you aren't really, you just don't remember anything) you would have a general anesthesia (or gas as people call it). If you want to be out tell them you want general anesthesia. There is pretty common confusion over which is which when people come into our office and now I've seen people on this thread with the same misconception. If you're having a local you are not going to sleep, unless you've been up for a week with tooth pain and once it's numb you zonk out :)
