Hi there,
I am offering someone who will be here in Cape Canaveral on Tuesday January 27th to attend a memorial gathering for the Apollo One astronauts which were Gus Grissom, Lee White and Roger Chaffee - Mrs. Grissom has invited me to attend and those that I may want to invite - if you do not remember, they were the super heros that died in a blaze of fire on the pad when the capsule was being tested. I can not take but just a few so if you are interested and will be here - you are most welcomed to drop me a note at snelsonbrown@aol.com - I feel very honored to be part of this memorial since I was here when the tragedy happened - I just wanted to share this with you especially if you are interested in the space program -
God bless
Take care
Always
Shirley

Shirley,
I will not be in the area then, but just wanted to post how wonderful it is that you are invited to this memorial and are willing to share the experience with some lucky Dis friends.

Hi CM
You know it is an opportunity of a lifetime - I once use to take my kids out to the Vistor's center at least 2 or 3 times a month so they grew up with the space programs - I met Mr. Grisson when he and the orginial "7" were in a parade here in Cocoa Beach and he was just super with my kids - well with everyone - he was a very down to earth person - I have been making the memorial wreath for 3 years now and had always wanted to go to one of the memorials - so this morning without knowledge this was a wish of mine, I was not only invited, but could offer for someone else to go besides my family - I just thought ok what a great opportunity for some family that would be here at that time and they could join a piece of history -
Anyhow thanks for the comeback
Always
Shirley

Shirley:

How nice of you to offer everyone the chance to be at a very special event. Too many of us today take the space program for granted and don't realize the risk these people take until something tragic happens and all the good that this work brings.

One of my earliest and fondest memories is watching the first moon landing at my grandparents on their black and white tv on my 5th birthday(please don't do the math;) )

Thanks for the offer and I will be contacting you soon re our 2/21 cruise.

Shirley -

How gracious of you to extend the offer to the DIS community - I certainly hope someone is able to join you. I unfortunately will not be able to get away but if I were anywhere close I would. How nice of you to share this opportunity with us.

We wont't be in the area until the 6th of Feb...too late, but if we were there a week earlier I would have loved to take you up on your gracious offer.

MJ

Dis Board Mom Shirley,

Know that we will be with you, your family and Apollo One's members and families, in spirit, as you attend this memorial service.

God Bless ^i^

Shirley,
If I am able to arrange the day off from work, I would be honored to atten with you. I will look into this tomorrow.
Thank You, Thank You,
Dawn Hope

Shirley-
Thanks for the open offer to the DIS group. There could not be a better person than you to be in attendance to represent the group.

Shirley - what a very special thing and so nice of you to share. We won't be in the area then but wanted to let you know we will be with you in spirit. Thank you!

I'll be with you in Spirit. What an honor to be invited to attend the Memorial Service by Mrs. Grissom. (Honestly Shirley, you know everyone!) My early memories are of watching the Gemini launches, and splashdowns. How exciting Brevard County must have been back then.

In the Dictionary, the word "CLASS ACT" should have a picture of you next to it!

Shirley, you are one classy lady!

Please tell Mrs. Grissom, that those of us from Grissom Air Force Base, Indiana still hold the memory of her husband dear to us.

God bless all,

Rae

I remember when I heard about apollo one and how Brevard County went into a dark depression, which happened again with the 2nd explosion in 1986 and then Columbia last year - it was if a dark cloud passed over our town but then I remember 9-11 and how New Yorkers felt living in the same state - even tho all the tragic events happen in our hometown, it affects the world - yes I do feel very honored for they are our heros also among so many in every walk of life.
Dawn - give me a call at the shop - it is going to be in the late afternoon - with the memorial about 7pm - we will be taken to pad 34 where the accident happened and i got my friend that plays the bagpipes to play at it.
Anyhow will let everyone know how it goes.
Much love
God bless each and all
Always
Shirley

Hi Shirley. Again, you take my breath away with your generosity. I only wish I could take you up on your offer. My mother has a picture of Gus Grissom in her kitchen. Growing up in the space age, we were all taught why the astronauts deserved our priayers and admiration. We appreciate the risk they take for us.

As far as 9/11 goes, I'm sure Gus welcomed all our heros with open arms.

Fondly,
Ursula- A New Yorker
