So I decided to start this thread and tell you all if, we the DVC members, decided to rent our points we can also set the rates for renting, afterall Apple sets the price of IPOD's and Microsoft set the prices for the XBOX...............................I am sure some DVC members will discount to buy a cruise on cash or help out in a financial crisis but if we set the price for the market these arguments I have seen about "renters getting a huge break" may end...............after all we are our own worst enemy.............Therefore I am leaning towards resetting my own rate in the future if I do rent at 14 dollars a point...........................Now tell me DVC members............is that too high too low or just about right in your estimation?

This should be in the renting forum, But I do not agree with you.
That is called price fixing. People should rent at what ever they feel is good for them, not make a set rate. With so many member no one would ever agree on a particular price anyway.

mel or me..............in case you have not noticed the price is already fixed based upon DVC history not their prices, no one really knows what the market will bear.................... I think it needs to be repaired..........and I dont think this should be in the renters forum...............I think it is a reasonable debate for DVCer's only.................not renters or non members...........and if you read the last line of my original posts.............it asks for your opinion.............I am guessing by your post..............you like the response, "too high, leave it alone".....................which is fine.

I don't see it broken. I have rented point, and personaly I think it is more of a hassle than anything. I do agree that what some rent at is to low, but some people only look to get the dues paid for if they are not useing points. Others want a profit and others are happy to just get anything instead of losing points alltogether.

added note I would rather give my points away that have them lost.

First of all I would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.

Who would subsidize my trips if the price was to go up? 10 dollars has been the going rate. Hopefully with all the SSR add-ons the price stays this way for a while. I always enjoy seeing days when the are more sellers then renters on the boards. I especially like all the IM’s s I get when I ask for points. Everyone undercutting each other leads me to believe this is a renters market and will always one.

your post leads me to believe that my premise was right..............DVC members are the problem...................and your comment to "who would subsidize your trips" really hits home. I will never rent to anyone again for 10 bucks a point

Anyone can set the rate for their points, if they decide to rent them, wherever they choose. It is a private agreement between the two parties. You can try to rent them at $50 per point if you wish, but whether there will be any "takers" or not, is another question. The renters must perceive a "value" to renting, and the owner must be happy with the price. If both conditions are not satisfied, there is no rental.

You are correct on forum, this is where it should be, I also would like to see others opinions.

Chuck that was awfully obvious................and not the point of the thread...............i think the post four before this really shows the issue bare bones.

No, you are claiming in post 3 that the price is already fixed...it is not. Rental prices vary depending on resort, season, availability, distress situation of the points, plus other variables. $10 is average some rent for more, some rent for less...and as I pointed out, you are welcome to ask whatever price you wish. If you want to get $14 per point, you may ask it and not budge from it, there will always be someone willing to undercut. Trying to set an agreed upon minimum price for all members is bordering on collusion.

if someone is willing to undercut it than there can be no collusion..............my point is ten dollars is where it is fixed based upon history pure and simple................when manufacturers of products or providers of service costs of doing business rise this gets passed onto consumers of their respective goods....................Why then chuck is it not appropriate for DVC members to ponder the same set of circumstance for rethinking their position on rental prices? I really want to see what the majority think about this issue.

The premise of this post is not what you thought it was...........it was that the market has not really set the price it has been set by history and precedent.............not market forces..............and the reason it has not been set by the market is because it is a closed market, not well known to Disney consumers, and one in which the sellers have not exercised any leverage over its service.....................

But "manufacturers and service providers" do not meet as a group of business to discuss raising prices...it is an individual decision for that company based on what the market will bear. You are suggesting that DVC owners, as a group, raise prices to a basic "minimum average" of $14. Besides, since renters would probably not see value in $14+ per point (even for OKW in low season that is $112 for a weeknight studio), then considering they get daily housekeeping through a CRO ressie, which would add $25 to the DVC ressie...then any promo code CRO may be offering, it starts to look like not such a great "deal" for a studio vs. a stay in a moderate for the average person. Then add weekend points for folks that want to stay a full week, and the perceived value is gone.

again your assumptions of what i said are biasing your own post..............I said I wanted to hear what everyone else thinks.............I have decided to no longer rent to anyone at 10 dollars a point. But I am not saying everyone should follow me...............I am asking what they think about the rental rate as it currently stands.

i would have to be real desparate to sell points on these boards...i have sold vactions on ebay for $800..they were for 5 night stays with between 50-70 points used depending on time of year....$10 a point is giving a complete stranger a 65% discount on thier vacation...sell vacations not points....the price per point is of no concern to whom i am selling a vacation.....

any CRO room compared to a DVC villa is a huge step down..............regardless of maid service............once a person stays in a Villa it is awfully hard to go back..................I have 12 renters for over 10 yrs.............and none will go back.............but i have informed them if they want the security of dealing woth me the price of inclusion has risen..............no more free lunch.

how about you read the whole post...................not just the point that suits you.........this should not be about my posts or yours.............it should be about what the vast majority think..................

Was not going to post again on subject but I think Chuck S had it right. Your OP before you edited it read as not to get opinions, but too suggest setting a price. If opinions are what you intended then it should have read that way to begin with.
