At the beginning of our November trip we spent the first few nights at the AKL. It was Thanksgiving week and we just loved it! I really love Boma and always wondered about Jiko, so we decided to give it a try. DS spent the evening at Simba's Cubhouse.
One note about this evening: I hate the tables for two in some restaurants. Jiko and Le Cellier come to mind. They are so small, which is one thing, but they are close enough to each other that you end up practically eating with strangers. Yet the tables for four do not have that same issue. This evening we "sat with" a very nice couple who were also on a date with their kids being babysat and another nice young couple who were on their first day of their trip and tracked everything they ate and drank in a largish PDA of some sort, complete with comments and thoughts. They were even able to go back in and look up a dinner they had had at a different restaurant and compare it to the meal they ordered. (This isn't a rip on them - it's nice that they can share their hobby with each other).
And no. We didn't actually converse with either couple, we were just THAT CLOSE.
But the service? Oh my GOSH was it impeccable! If anyone ever feels they are treated any different because of the
DDP at Jiko then they didn't have our server. He was just wonderful.
I only took photos of the desserts because it was just so elegant and quiet with the darkness outside the huge windows and the Christmas wreaths and to be honest...I didn't want to disturb our "table mates" with my flash.
Plus there are about 4000 photos of the items we got on the DIS already...
DH started with a flatbread featuring...what else? BBQ:
Barbecued Chicken Flatbread - with grilled onions, apple julienne, and four cheeses
This was really very good - he liked it, I thought it was different but good. I have only recently started eating meat and fruit together (never liked it before) and the granny smith type tart apple just worked with the chicken and BBQ (Kenyan Coffee BBQ Sauce, I believe) sauce.
I ordered (queue Angels singing...):
Kalamata Olive Flatbread - with four cheeses, and Laura Chenel's soft goat cheese
Oh....YUM! I have a tremendous weak spot for olives and I love cheese. And the combination and the tangy goat cheese was just amazing. I wanted so desperately to eat the whole thing and if we hadn't ordered entrees, I probably would have. Another comment on the service? We were so unrushed, I almost wished our server would have come back sooner to snatch the plate away.
Yup. To me it was THAT good!
For dinner we both ordered the filet mignon with macaroni and cheese and wine sauce. I ordered mine the way it was supposed to come and DH ordered his with the sauce on the side.
This was the best filet I had on both trips and the mac and cheese was amazing. Two of my favorite foods anyway, together they were wonderful. The wine sauce was thick and rich and the flavor was perfect with both the filet and with the mac and cheese.
This made me glad I hadn't eaten the whole flatbread!
And for dessert? I ordered a mocha, and our server he didn't think they had those, but he could put some chocolate syrup in a cappucino for me.
Good nuff!
He was very sweet, making sure his "concoction" was up to snuff. Such a sweetheart!
My actual dessert was something I thought was on the menu for Thanksgiving week, but it's still listed on allears:
Autumn Spiced Pumpkin Roll - (no sugar added) with apple and cranberry compote, cinnamon ice cream and finshed with grated nutmeg
The cranberry apple compote was tangy and sweet and was perfect with the ice cream and fresh nutmeg. The cream cheese filling in the cake was also very good. The cake? Imagine taking a spice cake and squishing it between two bricks until it was completely flat. Then dry it out for a few days until it's flat and chewy. Then add cream cheese filling.
It wasn't icky - just weird and not worth eating more than a few bites.
But the rest of it was top notch, and the rest of my meal and mocha make Jiko a must return for me!
DH ordered something pretty, chocolate and good (sorry - blurry photo!):
I don't remember for sure, but I think it could be the: Tanzanian Chocolate Cheesecake - with chocolate ganache, Amarula sauce, and lavender ice cream. We both thought it was extremely good.
In short: loved Jiko, but would prefer a table for four and could skip dessert and enjoy flatbreads and filet. Great evening!!
