I just talked to DH (who is in Iraq) for the first time in over 3 weeks and I could barely hear him!! For those of you that have never dealt with these phones, they are staticy, beep for several minutes where you can not continue your conversation, cut out worse than any cell phone and cut you off all the time! The entire 10 minutes we were on the phone I heard maybe 4 minutes of it, if that! I tried to let him know everything that is going on here in those few minutes, but well...it just wasn't enough time. He is scheduled to come home in a few weeks, but I didn't get to hear the date or even if he is still coming home. Sorry, I just needed to vent!!

That's too bad. I knew that they were bulky, but didn't know they had that much problem making contact.

I hate satellite phones too for the same reasons. It was awful when my dd Ashli would get a call from her bf Titus (he was in Iraq also) and it would disconnect after just a minute or the static would make it impossible to hear. Sooooo frustrating!

My DS's Daycare Provider's son called her today... She said she barley heard most of what he said, but she was happy to hear him call. So while yes you didn't get to say/hear everything, at least he called :) The only thing that miffed her was she got cut off when she said I love you....

The satellite phone that I use at work is newer, about the size of a larger cell phone. It constantly looks for a satellite, so it works pretty good. But I have to leave my office to make my monthly call since it doesn't pick up inside the building. It might just be the phone or the satellite.

Look at it this way, without them you wouldn't be talking to them at all. That being said, I'm looking forward to when I can communicate across the universe with no lag and full holographic projection (damn scifi raising the expectations).

:grouphug: I know what you mean. We ususally start the conversation with the ending so when we get cut off we at least got to say the I love ya's before we get cut off.

When dh was in Saudi in '97, I hated them.. I hated the echo.. Could hear everything twice. Does the Army still use them?
Last year cellphone and phone use wasn't too bad. Had to call to Us base to connect out which could be pain but connection wasn't too bad most of time

DH is in Iraq and has a regular phone and cellphone. We have pretty good connections. In fact we joke that it is better than some connections we have had stateside! :p Must be certain areas that use satellite.

DH is "elsewhere" (translation: in the wilds of Iraq /classified), so the reception is horrible. He does get a connection through Ft Drum, but it is still really bad. I usually say my I love/miss yous first because we get cut off ALOT. Yup, the phones still echo, have tons of static, and this irritating beeping every few seconds that you can not talk through. I hate to complain since i am lucky to get any phone calls, but it just sucks!
