I HATE cancer

Cancer has effected MANY of us here on the DIS.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I try to do my part to help find a cure by organizing teams and we walk in:
a) ACS (American Cancer Society) Relay for Life and b) ACS Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. They are lots of fun to do and for a fantastic cause. Our team raised over $3,000 for the Relay for Life last year! Our "team theme" is baseball and our slogan is "Batting for a Cure".

Gotta do my part in helping to find a cure.

We hate it, too! Wish it didn't exist in the first place; but since it does we hope they find a cure soon! Have lost too many loved ones to this horrible killer! Most recently my favorite Aunt! She was dead within two weeks of finding out she had liver cancer. She died the night before my Mom and got there to say out goodbyes!

Me too!! My wonderful dad died from mesothelioma, which is a cancer of the pleural lining of the lung, three months after he was diagnosed, eight years ago at age 64. We were suppose to celebrate his 65th birthday at Disney in December that year, but he was diagnosed in March and died in June, so needless to say, we celebrated a very depressing December that year. The only way you can develop mesothelioma is to have been exposed to asbestos at some point in your life, and then it takes approximately 40 years to develop into cancer. The only time my dad was exposed to asbestos that he knows of was when he was in the Navy and worked in the boiler room. All the pipes were covered in it.

We also just lost my 49 yo cousin to a brain cancer, neuroglioblastoma I think, this past February. Didn't make it to see his youngest son graduate from HS.

My dear uncle/godfather died from some type of stomach cancer four months before my dad died, so my mom lost her brother and her husband four months apart. The crazy thing is that my dad was perfectly healthy at my uncle's funeral in February, and then he is dead by June. My uncle Leo was the best, a true Disney fanatic who got me hooked! I miss him so much too. He would have loved Animal Kingdom. I hope he has his own Walt Disney World up there.

Sorry to be on such a roll. I thought NJ was the "Cancer" state, but I can see it is an equal opportunity destroyer.

Lost my father and fil to cancer this spring within 9 weeks of each other one to lung cancer one to pancreatic cancer

I hear ya. I loathe it also. Watching my aunt go downhill in two weeks time and dying is also a sobering experience.

I have a different take on it. Cancer is a terrible, awful disease that no one should ever have to go through. I was dx'ed with Lage B Cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma on August 28, 2003. I did surgery, chemo, and radiation. Tentatively in remission, waiting for the official word in October. I tend to view it, for myself, as that which did not kill me has therefore made me stronger. DH and I have been having SERIOUS financial problems, and I was really upset about it this week. He just took my face in his hands and said "You are the greatest fighter I know. You have such a spirit to you. You fought against cancer, which is the toughest test I could ever imagine. If you can get through that, you can get through anything." I am a fighter, I will win!

It was the same with my mom. Dx at 53 with cancer it spread from area to area faster than the drs could keep up with. She was often in pain and could and wouldnt eat. You are just helpless, nothing you try helps out. My mom was gone only months after her dx. I have never, never seen such a horrible thing happen to someone

Gallbladder.....
She had terrible gallstones years ago, but for some reason, they told her the operation to remove it would have been difficult. I now wish they did it all those years ago.

Not to be graphic or gross, but she had to get a bile bag because she turned bright yellow the few days before her diagnosis at stage 4. If you know what divurticulitis (sp) is, this gallbladder tumor blocked everything in the bile ducts and she got a terrible infection. It pretty much closed down her stomach and nothing could get past it. It was so horrible. I do everything in my power to block out the thought of her last few days, however I do remember the sunday before she died 7 days later as being a good day, relatively speaking.

Hugs to all those cancer survivors and those touched by this vile, terrible thing.

Everyone in my family who has passed on and several close friends has died from cancers: mouth, lung, prostate, breast, and on and on.

This is an instance where words like "hate" just don't come close.

Mom lung cancer, Dad colon cancer, Aunt brain tumor, Uncle prostate cancer, Uncle lung cancer, Grandma too, but I was too little to know what kind.

I had genetic counseling when I had my 3 yr. old because I was 36...she said if 1 more person in my family died from cancer, I really should do cancer screenings,...no kidding?....

I have 4 older brothers and sisters and hope, hope, hope...

On a side note, my MIL joined Visiting Nurses and helped form the current Hospice group in our area way back in the 70's...she was Nursing Coordinator etc.... she would never give to the American Cancer Society because she felt too much money went to the executive levels and not enough to research...she found other ways to help the cause...

I wish we could beat cancer to extinction. Cancer stinks. My father found out on Sept 11 he had cancer. First the doctors told him he had year then they told him six months. And on Oct 8 not even a month he passed away. Then a month later my mom gets diagnosed with cancer and now she is living with it. You would think they could find a way to rid this earth of it.
