I got yelled at!

I get to the parks quite often and I can tell you that almost every ride announces this at the beginning. Maybe because I have done it so many times that I listen for it so I can watch all the folks using their flash in the dark rides. It is distracting and takes away from the effect that Disney is trying to create.

Two years ago when we rode Peter Pan my husband rode with our son and I rode with our daughter. As the ships came around to unload there was an older couple in one boat who just never got off. Because of that it threw us off so that it was my husband and son, then the older couple, and then my daughter and I. The distance was just perfect for my husband to snap a picture of my daughter and I on my favorite ride! I didn't even know he was taking it because of it being so dark and there we were with these big smiles on our faces! It is one of my most treasured pictures and I'm sorry if the flash bothered the sweet older couple between us but it just means the world to me! On a side-note - I will say that when we came back through the unloading area they stopped the boats for a second so the couple could climb out. Oh, I hope that will be my husband and I someday!

I never take flash photos as Disneyland. I did get yelled at for something once. I was on Pirates and I wanted to video tape it before they refurbished it and added Jack Sparrow.

So I turned on my night vision camera. This does not distract anyone as it doesn't have a light on it or anything. However, if you're a CM watching the monitor (which is a night vision cam) it appears that i have a big spot light on my camera. but to everyone else on the ride, they can't see anything. It only shows up in the monitor.

So the CM came over the intercom and said to turn the light off the camera. even though I had no light on, I shut off night vision. I wanted to just keep it on and then explain to them that there was no light on to distract people. But it just wasn't worth the effort.

I would not assume that for one second. There is no flash photography allowed on ANY indoor ride at Disney or any Show.
and it annoys me if someone three cars away does it.
As for the woman not softening when you said you were sorry, well most people when confronted say they are sorry, doesn't usually mean much except that they are sorry they were caught or taken to task for it. I am not saying that was your case but I see her point. It is not like an accident where you appologise you didn't accidently fire off the camera.

As to your question about has anyone else been yelled at, Yes people yell at others both guests and CMs every day somewhere in DW.

Where exactly have you seen this rule posted? Because I don't believe that is true. They do say on certain rides "no flash photography" but not on all rides. I think it just annoys you, so you have decided to state what you wish was a rule as fact. I agree that on the rides where they tell you not to use flash that you should not, but I have never seen a written rule by Disney saying that flash photography was not allowed on ANY ride or at ANY attraction. You are off base with that one. Following your warped logic, you couldn't take flash pictures on Dumbo. Or at the Swiss Family tree house. These are not dark rides where a flash would detract from the experience.

I don't know if the rule is true or not. I've never seen it posted and I'm pretty sure it is NOT announced on every ride. Never really bothered to go out of my way to try to find the secret, hidden commandments of Disney. Just in general though, I think you get alot of people who have pet peeves for whatever reason about some things and claim that it is officially against Disney rules, hoping to twart others from doing something maybe...who knows. :duck: (I could really start naming some here, but won't.:tiptoe: ) That is why I am glad I am an adult and intelligent enough to process thoughts, use reasoning :teacher: and make choices for myself.

Some rides have the "No Flash Photography" listed on the WDW website. You can tell the list is incomplete because rides Haunted Mansion and Hall of Presidents don't have it listed, but I know I've heard the message on both those rides.

Example:

Pirates of the Caribbean: No Flash Photography
http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/parks/attractionDetail?id=PiratesoftheCaribbeanAttractionPage

Here's everything that I could find that had this listing..

EP: Living with the Land

EP: Ellens Energy Adventure

MK: Walt Disney World Railroad

MK: The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

MK: Magic Carpets of Aladdin

MK: Its a Small World

MK: Space Ranger Sping

MK: Pirates of the Caribbean

AK: Kilimanjaro Safaris

AK: Triceratop Spin

AK: Affection Section

HS: Toy Story Mania (not open yet)

:confused3

A Google search had multiple sites saying that Flash Photography is not allowed at any indoor attractions or shows at Walt Disney World. But none of those were very authoritative.

AK: Triceratop Spin

This list makes little sense because some of these are outdoor items. Why on earth couldn't you take a photo on Triceratop Spin?

On K Safaris, they tell you to get your camera ready and have it in action mode because they won't stop the truck to take pictures.

On K Safaris, they tell you to get your camera ready and have it in action mode because they won't stop the truck to take pictures.

The list is for rides where flash photography isn't allowed, nothing about no photography at all.

Safaris is a little weird as they always shut down before dark. I could see not allowing flash photography after dark as it would bother the animals and could blind the driver but that's a moot point.

I haven't been to AK yet but I definitely plan on taking photos on the safari. And I'm pretty sure no one will mind.

From a biology standpoint, they don't want flashes on cameras on the Safari (not that a decent photographer would, since it's daylight out there anyway) because most animals see differently than humans do and could potentially react badly to being startled by flashing cameras. This rule makes total sense to me.

I myself am hypersensitive to bright lights in dark areas, it blinds me and leaves blue spots in my eyes for a couple minutes, which is enough time to miss most of Peter Pan or any of the other dark rides. Rule, no rule, ambiguous rule, doesn't matter - it is rude to take them regardless. It is selfish of anyone to take a bunch of blurry photos with overlit foregrounds while the rest of us are blinded for no good reason. :headache:

In response to earlier posters who seem offended by other comments, yes it is true there are some people who post on this board solely as a forum to complain. It is true that some folks take on a guise of authority when really they are parroting somebody else who was parroting another person who... well, you get the idea. But sheesh - there have been some snappy remarks here! :scared: This particular issue is just an issue of manners. We all pay (more or less) the same to visit the parks, we all want magical moments, we all have the same excited expectations. And if you end up sitting in my boat and snap a flash photo, I will be the one saying 'hey, cut it out' right out loud. ;)

Kind of off topic. But you know those necklaces with all the colorful flashing lights? Well, we were at Disneyland and we went on Pirates right after they added the new stuff (Jack Sparrow.) Two people in the front of the boat had those bright necklaces on and it was really annoying. I was in the back of the boat so I politely yelled to the front of the boat, "can you please turn the necklaces off?" And that started the rest of the boat yelling "turn the necklaces off!" And they did. They were off before we even went down the first drop. We all yelled thank you after that.

Sometimes I think people just don't realize stuff like that can be distracting.

There have been snappy remarks from both sides of the fence.:cool2: Problem is, what one person sees as 'bad manners' someone else may not find an issue with--all just depends on the person and how they interpret situations. Granted, some people...OK, many people...tend to leave their common sense at home when they go on vacation.:sad2:

And I have to wonder, how many people (DIS nuts like us aside) live by the Disney website and extensively search for every little rule about pictures before they leave....:confused3 I have to agree with what someone said earlier, the fact that they announce 'no flash photos' on some rides and not on others would lead me to believe that it was acceptable on some.

In any case, no worries! Going to the World in 4 days :woohoo: and plan to come back with lots of nice pics...both on and off the rides!:hippie:

I would think that flash photography would distract other riders and take away some of the magic of the ride for them. I think it would me... :cool2:

It absolutely does. There was someone on our last trip using a flash on Pirates and Haunted Mansion. How someone can't tell that's distracting is beyond me.

I agree with the poster that stated it's common sense. Sorry if that sound rudes, but it really is.

I'd be upset if someone were taking flash pictures inside any Disney ride. I've seen it happen many times, the last was on that exact ride in the car in front of me. It distracts from the ride experience.

I don't believe that the OP was thinking about how it would affect the ride for others. I feel that she learned from her error and I really appreciate that she posted knowing that she might get some ribbing. I can't say that I blame the person who yelled at her for being upset but I'd like to think that if it were me, I'd have been a little more calm about it. I'd have walked up to you and calmly mentioned that I'd my family would have enjoyed the ride much more without the flash from her camera and left.

First of all let me say I have no idea what rides say or dont say "photography".
I am surprised noone else has mentioned those stupid cell phones people hold up to snap pictures. Yes flash is bothersome to me but LCD screens are also annoying. I find them distracting. For what its worth I know the Great Movie Ride is also not allowed because much to my horror my wife snapped a shot. There was an announcement on the ride and a CM after the ride who told her. LCD screens are just as bad as flash. If Disney had intended there to be green lights in all the cars they would have put them there. Sorry if it sounds "Grumpy" but it is a huge pet peeve of mine. It rates right up there with people who take up the whole aisle at the grocery store and pay no attention to anyone who might need to get past them.

In my perfect world, everyone would do what I want them to do, act how I want them to act and follow my rules, not do things that irritate me because I don't like it... However, I understand that The World with the castle and the mouse is not MY world, no more than it is everyone elses--it's like a real public place with real live people and everything! I'm sure I could go on all day about things that I personally find annoying and wish people wouldn't do, but I'd rather not sweat the samll stuff. You have to deal with other people who's mindsets are different. This thread has been very...enlightening. It's sort of distrubing that people are so worried about what others are doing that they allow it to 'ruin' their experience.:sad2:

True enough Bama...its still DW!! There are alot of people from other countries as well who may not even understand the announcements. Whaddaya gonna do huh? Even with LCDs I cant wait to go next month its going be a great time!!!

Flash photography is not allowed on any ride.

It is written in quite a few places around DW and also announced on some rides, but you are not supposed to take flash photography anywhere in rides or shows.

I would not assume that for one second. There is no flash photography allowed on ANY indoor ride at Disney or any Show.

Sorry, but you're all quite wrong. If there are no signs or announcements at the attraction stating otherwise (as is the case at the Haunted Mansion, Dinosaur! or Pirates, among others), guests may take as many flash photographs as they like.

Some attractions (like the Country Bear Jamboree) even encourage flash photography at designated times.
