I Got Work to Pay for My DISNEY FEASTS w/PICS! COMPLETED 11/14 - Whispering Canyon

I have always wondered if you could get seconds on the dumplings. Thanks for answering that for me. Loving the reviews!

Yes, you can get seconds... thirds... fourths... whatever, on anything there! I'm not quite sure about the dessert, but I don't know anyone who has ever had room for seconds on that!

You will leave full! Even if you don't enjoy everything that's on your plate, enjoy the things you like and eat as much as you care to... or dare to! ;)

We will be having dinner there on the same night. :thumbsup2 We will be celebrating my DS's birthday also. Enjoy

OP great reviews.. :thumbsup2

Thanks!

Have fun at your DS's birthday! It's fun to celebrate in WDW! :dance3:

Ohana looks delicious! It's going to be our first dinner... Looks like it's going to be a good one!

That's great! Enjoy! :goodvibes

I've never been to Ohana, but am thinking about trying it next trip. Do I understand from your description that it is served family style? I saw a large bowl of salad in your pics, so I assume it's not a buffet. Do they bring it out all at once or in courses? We have eaten at Garden Grill before and they pretty much bring it all out at once (we've only been for lunch, so don't know if it's different at supper when they add a salad to the meal) and then keep replenishing it as needed. Is that how Ohana works also? Is there enough "regular" food that my ultra picky husband wouldn't starve to death?

Yes, it's served family style, in courses.

They start with bread (except we requested none because of the nuts).

Then they bring out salad.

Then they bring out the noodles, wings, dumplings, and broccoli.

The meat - pork, turkey, steak, & shrimp (we didn't want the shrimp) - comes out individually on skewers. If you've ever been to a Brazilian restaurant, they do the same thing... I believe it's called a rodizio. A CM will have a skewer of numerous portions of pork and come to each table asking if you'd like some... then a few minutes later, another CM, or the same one, will come out with a skewer of numerous portions of steak and ask if you'd like some... etc.

The meat is pretty normal... no outrageous flavorings added to it. I remember some kinda dressing in the salad that made it a little bit sweet (but no really strong flavor), and the noodles and broccoli were pretty tame. That should all be safe stuff for non-adventurous (aka picky) eaters.

I'd say the dumplings are a bit different, think Asian... and the wings were a very unique flavor that I've never had anything like before... somewhat sweet, which I don't normally associate with a wing unless it's honey BBQ, which these wings do not taste like.

The pineapple bread pudding is a nice, sweet dessert... just kinda depends on if your husband likes pineapple... or banana... I personally loved that bananas foster sauce! But if banana is a problem, just make sure your sauce comes on the side.

I'm sure they could bring out plain ice cream if that's what your husband wants.

I hope this helps!

Sci-Fi Dine-In & Writer's Stop

Thursday, July 26, 2009

We went to Sci-Fi for lunch, and they were packed! We probably had our longest wait all week for a restaurant right here. We were early for our ADR, 20 minutes early, like they say to be, but we probably waited close to 30 minutes.

The good news was that we got to sit in a car right up in front. And it was so nice to have the boys in the front, totally entertained by the movies, including Tom & Jerry cartoons which had recently become a favorite for them.

Here we all are...

IMG_1881a.jpg

I didn't get pictures of the kids' food, as they got pizza served with apples... there might have been another side offered, but they didn't want anything else.

And they had chocolate ice cream for dessert... my kids are generally very predictable when it comes to dessert... either chocolate ice cream or chocolate chip cookies and they're thrilled!

This is where hubby wondered if he should get the ribs because they're the best value on the DDP... I told him to get whatever he wanted... price didn't matter... his happiness was most important.

He was going back and forth between the reuben and the burger and finally decided on the burger...

IMG_1879a.jpg

He got it with fries and also had a chocolate shake as the drink. (Sorry, no pic!)

I, on the other hand, rib lover that I am, got the ribs...

IMG_1882a.jpg

They let me pick any two sides. I got veggies (to be healthy :)) and french fries because it had been a while since I had eaten sit-down restaurant fries with ketchup. Fries were good! Veggies were ok, just a bit too much. I had to make room for other things like my drink...

IMG_1878a.jpg

An oreo shake! I know it looks like all the cookie crumbs were on top, but they really did get into every sip. Sooo good! :thumbsup2

Looks like we had a full meal... but on DDP, you still got dessert!

So hubby got the fudge sundae...

IMG_1883a.jpg

Note the cherry on the table... yep, hubby really just doesn't like his fruit! It came off the top as soon as his dessert was served!

But hubby enjoyed, and actually couldn't quite finish it all... he left tons of hot fudge sticking to the side of the glass! How could he? Do you know how much work the cleaning crew would have getting all that fudge off the inside of the glass? So, I helped the cleaning crew by getting rid of some of that fudge myself... ;)

It was quite yummy!

I just wish I could have said the same about my dessert...

IMG_1884a.jpg

I got the peanut butter-chocolate cake... but had seen pictures of it on the DISboards where it had nuts over the top, so I asked for it without the nuts. I don't like chunky nuts in my desserts. (BTW, they don't say that it comes with these nuts over it on the menu, you just have to know.)

The menu describes this as a warm chocolate cake (kinda) with a creamy peanut butter center (no way) served a la mode (yes)...

Shall I elaborate?

I love chocolate and peanut butter... I generally think of them as a match made in heaven. :cloud9:

But this dessert was not what I expected. :sad2:

The cake was warm, but not very chocolatey. The creamy peanut butter center was totally not creamy. In fact, it was hardly existent. If you ever get the peanut butter in the jar that has the oil on top that you're supposed to stir around, almost inevitably, you know that by the time you get to the bottom of the jar, there's this hard, almost crumbly peanut butter substance left after you've gone through all the creamy PB. That crumbly substance is kinda like what was inside this cake... and very little. The ice cream was fine, and I wouldn't suggest bothering to eat the cake without some of the ice cream with each bite.

I left about half this cake on the plate, but ate most of the ice cream. I was glad I had the opportunity to try the cake, but I think next time, I'd be better off sticking with my rib dinner and an oreo shake. That would be a very filling & delicious meal with just those two aspects.

---

As far as food goes, we found ourselves at the Writer's Stop a couple times. I had thought this was basically a coffee & a muffin type place at one point, which it can be... but in the middle of July, I couldn't imagine anyone getting anything hot... and muffins... not needed... we needed to chill.

Hubby did get a red icee. They had other flavors too. We shared the red icee around and it really cooled us off quite well! Strangely, we couldn't get ice water here though. We did get cups of ice... and walked to a water fountain to fill in the between-ice gaps.

I did recall something from the DISboards about the Writer's Stop though, and I found that I was recalling correctly...

They had lots of baked goods...

But most importantly, this was the home of the carrot cake cookie...

IMG_1900a.jpg

:lovestruc

I really wasn't very hungry for a while after Sci Fi, but I did purchase one of these to try it. Loved it! And I didn't even notice big chunks of nuts (which was what I fear, knowing that often happens in a lot of carrot cakes)... this was soft and the cream cheese frosting type of center filling was the perfect compliment! I packed up most of this, saving it for breakfast the next morning (we were on our way back to the resort shortly after this, so I was able to get it into our fridge). It was still just as good in the morning.

The carrot cake cookie is definitely on my must-do-again list! :thumbsup2

Later this evening, we did go back to POFQ for dinner. Guess what I had... more ribs! And another oreo shake! Not the same as Sci Fi, but certainly good! And I prefer the mac n cheese and cornbread on the side of my ribs at POFQ over the fries and veggies I had at Sci-Fi. Hubby tried the jambalaya and loved it! He actually didn't get beignets though... shocked me... he got another chocolate shake! The shakes at POFQ are good... real ice cream shakes... not like that frosty-like shake I had gotten at AK a few days earlier.

So this was, for the most part, a very filling food day...

The next day I would be in my conference until dinner time, but it was a great dinner to look forward to...

Stay tuned for my Le Cellier review!

 boy does that look good! Looks like I'll have to add a stop there to my unofficial agenda. Of course, if I stop and get everything that I've seen or heard about that I don't usually get to get when the rest of the family is around i will do nothing but eat for 5 days - but hey - that's ok too! :thumbsup2

super great reviews!

That carrot cake cookie!!!!!! Wowza- I am so going to Writer's shop for that yummy looking concoction!!!!:thumbsup2

I love your reviews!!! And your photo's are great - really good quality!:thumbsup2

Thanks! :cutie:

Four meals in a row of ribs! A girl after my own heart.

Technically... it was two meals in a row Tuesday... then two meals in a row Thursday... there was that Wednesday with 'Ohana in between...

But don't think it's over... I had even more ribs later!

Did I mention I love ribs? :lovestruc

Seriously... gotta try it! And don't think you've gotta get one snack for every person when it's time to snack! Share! Some of these things (like the carrot cake cookie) are so big, you'll fill up on just a half!

My family also shared stuff like popcorn, cotton candy, & funnel cakes (those things are HUGE!)

If you share, you'll have that much more ability to try new stuff!

:goodvibes

Can you really go wrong when you mix up two desserts into one masterpiece? ;)

Yes, you've gotta try it! It's one of those things that you can't just get anywhere!

The problem is there's no one to share with :confused3 Hubby & I are going down, but he's going to be spending most of the time at a golf tournament - I am tagging along for the trip but doing my own thing once we get there. He wouldn't eat this one anyway.....but maybe some of the other goodies I'll wait until he's around

Well, you may not have as much to try if you're depending on snack credits... apparently more stuff is off the list. I just heard a report that now you can's get funnel cakes at the MK anymore! And we just did in July! Goes to show you how fast policies can change...

I'm so upset! First they start significantly limiting the Goofy's Candy Company treats... now no more funnel cakes... :sad1:

Enjoy what you still can!

On another note, the good thing about being by yourself sometimes is that you can try things that you know your traveling partner doesn't care about as much as you do - food, experiences, or whatever! Like had I not been by myself in DTD, I probably wouldn't have tried the amazing All-American (no tomatoes) at the Earl of Sandwich! I'm glad I did though! :goodvibes

No dining credits. We belong to DVC so we don't qualify for free dining when we are staying on points. And when we are in a larger unit we usually have food in the room for breakfast or light snacks so purchasing a dining plan would be too much for us - we would never use all the credits - or we'd be miserable by forcing ourselves to use them all!

I'm thinking one of my solo meal adventures may be the counter service in Morocco - but I haven't totally convinced myself of that yet :confused3

Well, I suppose I can't really say, "oh, you poor DVC member... you don't qualify for free dining..." (I think you get quite a few benefits that non-DVC members don't get! Enjoy your perks!)

You enjoy your stay and don't be afraid to be adventurous! If trying Moroccan cuisine is what you'd like to do, you do it!

And enjoy staying at your home away from home! We'll be dreaming of those DVC accommodations while we're staying at an All-Star on our next trip!

wow - thanks for reviews..

ribs...yum!!

Good example of how to score brownie points with your in-laws... or in-law (singular... hubby doesn't like carrot cake!)

Le Cellier

Friday night, the perfect way to end a busy day at my conference was to meet my family in Canada... for dinner at Le Cellier!

Here's hubby and Big Guy approaching...

IMG_1944.jpg

For starters... we got drinks... Le Cellier give you good drink options on the DDP.

I had a chocolate raspberry milkshake. Look at how pretty it is!

IMG_1948.jpg

I thought it was good for what it was, but I think I was in the mood for something more "solidly chocolatey" and probably should have just ordered a chocolate shake at the time. Mood aside, it was a sweet drink, tasty, and definitely a mixture of raspberry and chocolate... you could easily taste both.

Hubby got a virgin strawberry daiquiri... I actually almost wished I'd ordered that instead of mine! Very sweet though...

IMG_1947.jpg

On to appetizers... yes, included on DDP, at least when you get the special meal on the menu that says "pick one of these appetizers, one of these entrees, and one of these desserts."

We got what everybody should get:

IMG_1949.jpg

Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup! Yummy! I must say though, that it is very filling!

We also enjoyed the breadsticks... others are right. Go for the pretzel bread! I like mine with butter... but then again, I like everything with butter! Yes, gotta follow my momma's teachings: "butter makes everything better."

Some of the other breadsticks did taste good dipped in the soup too!

Hubby and I both got the prime rib... fantabulous! :thumbsup2 So juicy and delicious! I did ask for horseradish sauce on the side... glad I did because I didn't care for that.

IMG_1950.jpg

I didn't care for the potatoes... not that I had room for them in my belly! So no biggie. Hubby loved them though!

I tried to consolidate our extra "Minnie" bowls on a plate (from butter and horseradish sauce), but I ended up with a "Mickey:"

IMG_1951.jpg

The kiddos had pasta and pizza, if I recall correctly... same old stuff they pretty much got at other TS restaurants. As long as they're happy with it, we're happy! (Sorry, no pics of their main courses though...)

I did get their desserts though! :goodvibes

They had make-your-own sundaes!

Little Guy:

IMG_1955.jpg

Big Guy (with special birthday message):

IMG_1953.jpg

The boys both agree about the dessert... two thumbs up! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I had the maple creme brulee.. never had any creme brulee before, so this was a first.

IMG_1956.jpg

I loved the stuff under the darkened sugary top... very light and creamy... mapley and sweet... but the darkened sugary top... blech... actually made me sick... I felt so sick I had to run to the restroom, and I had to vacate the restaurant to get some fresh air. That darkened stuff kinda left a bad taste in my life... kinda coffee-like. I despise coffee... catch me with coffee aroma at the wrong time, and it can make me feel sick. That's what was happening, and I couldn't sit at the table with it in front of me any more. But I really did like the non-darkened stuff underneath! I would've eaten more if I hadn't gotten sick from trying the darkened stuff.

Hubby got the chocolate moose... and in case you're not familiar with it, I did spell that right...

IMG_1952.jpg

He loved it. I was too sick to taste it though!

He also had fun goofing around with the moose tongue (which is just a cookie):

IMG_1957.jpg

:sad2:

All around a good time... and we will be back! :goodvibes I just will be avoiding the burnt top of the creme brulee...

More fun eats to come... our last full day in Disney! Stay tuned for a snack-filled lunch and Whispering Canyon Cafe!
