I Found the Funnel Cake, but Where is the Chocolate Covered Pineapple?

My family and I went to Disney World this summer for 9 days and 8 nights in a resort that we had only stayed in for one night on a previous trip in 2002. We stayed in Port Orleans Riverside, in Alligator Bayou building 14 on the first floor room 1420. We were originally slated to stay in building 25 but a snafu in the computer allowing us in with our magic bands got us an unexpected upgrade to a preferred location. Works for me! :thumbsup2 :cool1:

We have done the dining plans in the past, both the regular and the deluxe, both multiple times. This time, we were not there during free dining and our choices of eating establishments didn’t allow for us to choose a plan that would allow us to get our monies worth or to eat the way we wanted. We were also on a slightly tighter budget overall but wanted to enjoy Disney the way we wanted to and not be corralled into a plan that we didn’t like. Therefore let’s get on with the questions…

Who: Who are we?

I am Karla, mom, wife and planner of all trips for our family. My favorite things to plan are our Disney trips and our cruises. I am 45 and love food. I am not a “foodie”, I just love food. I love seafood, steaks, chicken, some fish, a few veggies and love some fruits. I am a meat and potatoes gal in general but can also get down with a good pasta dish. I am the least adventurous of our group in terms of trying something new.

DH is Matt, dad, husband and likes to have input into the vacations and will help if I want/need it. He is 44 and is a carnivore! He loves meat, meat and more meat but will eat veggies and fruits. He will eat pasta but only if there isn’t a better meat dish available. He will try just about anything once but is not a big fan of spices and will NOT eat onions or peppers but loves him some garlic!

DS is Alex, son and 15. He is a bottomless pit that will graze all day long if allowed. Being autistic, he has some definite no-nos. He is not a big sauce fan and if he gets it, will get it on the side. He doesn’t use many condiments at all. He loves to eat food. His favorite is shrimp then a close second has to be calamari. He isn’t a big fan of veggies and likes even fewer fruits due to their texture. He loves all kinds of meats and side dishes that aren’t veggies or fruit. The interesting thing with him is that he will look at a menu and order the thing on it that I think he would be least interested in. Teenagers, go figure!

DD is Paige, daughter and 11. She considers herself a burgeoning foodie. She will try just about anything once except fish and there will be absolutely NO burgers on her plate! She loves seafood, steak, chicken and pork. She will pay for some good potatoes and will eat some veggies. She loves her some good fruit and yogurt. She will get down with some good pasta as well. And she would put pepper on almost anything you set in front of her, and lots of it!

Where and When: Where did we go and when?
We were down in July this year because my Dear Niece graduated high school, turned 18 and is going away to college and there was a HUGE party for her on July 19. So we worked our vacation around that since they live in Kissimmee and that is where the party was held. We drove down in our sedan, leaving on July 17th and arriving on the 18th. We stayed in Port Orleans Riverside in Alligator Bayou until checking out on the 27th.

Why: Why did we do this trip?
Well, it’s a Disney trip, duh! :lmao: Oh but we really were celebrating some things. First we were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary, our DD’s 12th birthday, and my 45th Birthday along with the party for our niece.

Now that all the initial questions are out of the way, let us get onto the where did we eat. That is coming up in my next post! Hope you follow along and enjoy.

Our line up of restaurants that we originally chose to eat were

18th- Ohana
20th- (Chef Mickey's for Breakfast) Trail's end instead and Be our Guest for Dinner
21st- 50's Prime Time Café for lunch and Fast Food Counter Service at HS
22nd- Rose and Crown Lunch and Teppan Edo Dinner
23rd- Raglan Road Lunch and Maya Grill Dinner
24th- Via Napoli Lunch (just DH and I) and Yachtsman Steakhouse Dinner (again just the 2 of us)
25th- Yak & Yeti Lunch and Cape May Café Clam Bake
26th- Kona Café Breakfast and Cosmic Ray's Counter Service Dinner

Did we change any of our original options??? Wait and see...

Just thought I would give you a small view of who we are.

These are my beautiful, lovely cherubs!

I forgot we both had CM for breakfast on the same morning! What time were you there? Or maybe I should stay tuned since you mentioned maybe not keeping all your ADRs ;)

Hi Karla! :wave2: Count me in. I can't wait to hear all about your trip! :yay:

Joining in too. I can't wait to hear about your trip. We're starting to plan our trip for next year and were planning on doing POR (gonna do preferred and request bldg 14). How did you like it?

Us too have done both dining plans and although we love the deluxe, we need to be a little more budget conscious this time. Therefore, I think we're gonna go OOP due to the places we wanna eat. I'm anxious to see how this worked out for you guys.

:welcome: We loved it! We were about 1 minute from the main building/food court/bus stop. I would do POR again. We wanted Alligator Bayou because of the extra bed. Since we have a teen boy and a tween girl, we don't want them to have to sleep together and what kind of vacation would it be if I had to sleep with my DD and my DH had to sleep with my DS??? Not a good one I tell you. So DH and I had a bed, DD had the "murphy bed" and DS had the other queen bed, worked for everyone!

Joining in. Love a good dining review.

:welcome: So glad to have you. Hope this meets your expectations of a good dining review!

First Happy 20th Anniversary and 45th birthday. What a great way to celebrate. Looking forward to your reviews since you ate at a lot of our family favorites.

:welcome: and thank you! I figured I deserved a treat or 6 since we usually celebrate the kids birthdays when in Disney. Hope you like the review.

Travel Days

So, I will not bore you with all our travel, but I will say that we didn’t have it as bad as I thought we might. We drove because it was half the cost of flying and this year we had a set budget. Even with our budget, we wanted to eat just where and when we wanted to eat because at least half of our Disney vacations are the food portions. We love the food, our standard must do’s on every trip and our try something new. We did all of those, while changing our original line up. I blame the change on a few things, one being a rumor that one restaurant changed its menu and I couldn’t confirm that so I didn’t take a chance and the other reason, well that is a story I will share.

Over the months leading up to my trip, I was regularly reading many dining reviews from strangers and form Disers that I “know” from reading their past reports. I will give credit here to Jerseytinkerbell, Jeri. I love her reports! She had some reviews in the last 2 that she did that made me change 2 of my ADR’s for this trip. I won’t tell you where just yet. Was I right to change? Was my experience as good as hers? You shall soon see!

As for our travel days, my DH decided that we should try some different places. He even went as far as to research exits off of I-95 to see what was at each exit and how long it would take to get to it and if it was in our meal time range. He took prepping for our trip to a level even I have never done, and I am a planner to the core!!! I told him that we had a strict budget for travel and we could only fluctuate about $5 for the meals. Could we do it? Each fast food budget on travel days was $25 for all four of us. I know, right? It was tight! I wanted most of my budget for Disney food!!!

*** I will apologize for no food photos on travel food***

On our first travel day, we ate cereal at home for breakfast and got on the road. Our first stop was lunch around 1:45pm and we opted for Firehouse Subs. We have never been before so we thought it might be a cool change from Subway. So what did we get?

DD- kids meatball sub meal

DS- regular size meatball sub-Italian meatballs, melted provolone, zesty marinara, and Italian seasonings. Best meatballs guaranteed!

DH- Steamer Sub, Corned beef brisket, pastrami, melted provolone, mustard, mayo, and Italian dressing

Me- Club on a Sub- Smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham, crispy Smithfield® bacon, and melted Monterey Jack, served Fully Involved. I got it without mustard (yuck!) Getting it fully involved gets you lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, onion and a pickle on the side.

It cost us $31.00 which included drinks for all of us and a dessert for the kids meal. We went over by $6 from original budget or $1 for overage amount. Not too bad! I would go back. We don’t have those near where we live. I loved the way they steam all their meats and it adds an interesting flavor to a regular sub. Fresh product and friendly staff give this a good rating!
I would give it a 4.5 alligators out of 5. (1 alligator – wouldn’t send an enemy there up to 5 alligators- I want every meal there from now until the end of time)

Dinner that first travel day was at Zaxby’s. I had heard some good things about this place and since we don’t have one up here, it fit the bill for new (even if we have eaten the kind of foods they serve there)
We split some items for this meal.

DD and DH- 10 wings and crinkle fries

DS and Me- 10 Fingers and crinkle fries

We just drank water bottles we had with us.

This meal cost us$23.06 and we were slightly under budget. This place is similar to a place we have here called Fingers, Wings and Other Things. I happen to prefer the FWOT fingers to Zaxby’s but they were still good. Wings were small for the price but nicely flavored. Fries were average but good since they were fresh. Zaxby’s sauce was nice, bit of spice but not too much.
It gets a 3 alligators from all of us. I would go there if nothing else in the area stood out.

Day 2 started out with a very lack luster free breakfast from our hotel. Such a limited choice and they called it a hot breakfast because it had waffles you could make. No, hot means I get eggs, meats, waffles and oatmeal. Not cool, but when you only pay $66 for the hotel, you get what you pay for!

On to lunch…

For our lunch, we opted for Krystal. We have had them before and knew we could do something relatively cheap that all of us would eat. Remember that DD doesn’t touch hamburgers, oops! :sad2: What on earth would we get her??? Can we stay in budget without doing their big packs???

Well DD got a pup combo- 3 corn dogs with med. Drink and med. Fries.

I got 3 bacon cheeseburger combo- with medium drink and medium fries.

DS and DH got a 12 pack cheese combo- with 2 medium drinks and 2 medium fries.

Well, $29.65 later we are only slightly under the fluctuation budget. DD LOVED her pups, DS and DH liked theirs and loved that they each had 6 plus a drink and fries. I was unpleasantly surprised by the fact that they had mustard on them, blech! I don’t do mustard! I wiped off as much as I could and suffered through it. I only ate 2 and had my fries as I got full rather quickly. This has been happening a lot lately, I only eat a little bit and get full. Will it save me money? Probably not, ha! We would go again, but I would get them without mustard next time. We rate it
3.5 which is ok and a return visit would be in the future. DD gives it a 4.5 because she loves her some corn dogs! :lmao:

Up next dinner at O’hana (we made it to Disney, YEAH!!!):yay:

I'm impressed with the $25 budget for meals! You go girl!!!!! :-) I have never ate at a Firehouse Subs but it does sound good. Glad all the restaurants fit the bill. We hate White Castle here which I believe is similar to Krystal's. In this house it's a guy thing to eat there. Hahaha. I haven't ate at Zaxby either. I know I've seen them in Alabama when we visit our son. Is it similar to Kentucky Fried?? Looking forward to the start of the Disney dining reviews. Let the fun begin!!!!!!

I seems like they took KFC and expanded it. Appetizers, salads, wings, sandwiches, fried chicken, tenders, sauces, sides. But where as KFC seems to focus on the fried chicken, Zaxby's is the whole menu, anything you can make with chicken (fast food) and all kinds of sides to accompany it. They have a website you can check out if this doesn't help. :lmao: This week I will put up our first Disney meal!

Yay!! First update :) I love Firehouse Subs, but I got food poisoning from Zaxbys last fall and I'm still dealing with repercussions from it, so even the mention of it makes me gag, ha! Can't wait to hear about your Disney choices!

 Oh, that is just no good! Can I assume it was from some undercooked chicken? I always look inside my chicken before I eat it, no matter where I get it from! I just can't stomach undercooked anything. But something that would make you sick to boot, yikes! No thanks!

Hi there :wave2: joining in! I have to comment on Zaxby's! I'm from NY but my parents moved down to Ga. for a few years back in 1992. They had a Zaxby's by them which *kind of* made up for the lack of good bagels and pizza lol! I fell in love with their chicken salad and Texas toast and got it a couple times each time I visited............ah, good memory:goodvibes

Looking forward to reading more!
