I am so stupid for being a smoker. I hate it, everything about it. I have tried to quit, many times. (*smaking self in head*) I have wanted to quit for a long time, now I need to quit. Seems that the meds I need I cant take because I am over 35 (by three months) and I smoke. If I quit, I get the meds I need.
Why, why, why did I ever start in the first place? I have tried that gum, which is totally discusting. Itally's coke from the cooling station in Epcot is better than that. I will be starting the patch this week. Has anyone had luck quitting? What did you do and did your family members survive?

Like I said, I envy non-smokers.

After many attempts, I just quit cold turkey almost a year ago...Odd thing is I still keep an open pack in my drawer - I don't dare throw them out because if I am ever to crave again...those are the cigarettes I'll make myself smoke and they'll be so stale, I'll never do it again. It also for some bizarre reason makes me feel as if I have power over it every time I see them in the drawer.

The cravings stopped after a while. It was hard at first, but even now when I go to places or I am with people where I normally would be smoking I have NO urge.

Hang in there, it gets easier... YOU CAN DO IT!!

BLECH = Italy's Coke in Epcot's cooling station.

YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!

I've seen many, many people much older than you stop forever.......... some with the patch, some with gum, some with Zyban, some just "cold turkey". The physical craving should really subside after only 10 days; it's the "psychological" dependence that can then do you in. There's a host of great stop smoking material on the net or through the American Cancer Society.

GOOD LUCK!!!!:D

A friend of mine, a 70 yo man, stopped cold turkey. He had smoked all his life.

For some reason last winter he couldn't breathe  , and they took him to the hospital. They found a "cloud" on one of his lungs and it scared him. Come to find out, there was nothing wrong, but it was enough.

good luck. It's stories like your's that make me very grateful I never got started. {{{hug}}}

I never even started smoking. When I mentioned that to smokers or ex-smokers, they usually say, "Smart man. I wish I had never started."

I did Acupuncture 8 yrs ago. It was a breeze! The best $90 I ever spent!:D

Good luck!

You should talk with your doctor or nurse practitioner about quiting smoking. Wellbutrin (Zyban) is often prescribed along with the patch. You should also have follow-up visits to see how everything is going. Good Luck and keep us posted on how it is going.

You know I sometimes think my Diet Coke addiction must be similar to smoking, drinking etc. I am just as addicted and have to have my Diet Coke "fix" a zillion times per day. I have tried cold turkey giving it up but I just go right back. Water is just nasty!

I really don't have any advice, as I'm not a smoker, but I just wanted to offer my support. I hope the patch will work for you. I kind of think smoking and over-eating are similar, really, really hard to quit doing either of them!! I admire anyone who can successfully quit smoking, or over-eating!! :teeth: Good luck!!!

Thank you for all your words of support!
Acupuncture? I didnt even think of that! How many times did you do that? I would love to be free of this stupid habit very soon.

Barry Hom I never even started smoking. When I mentioned that to smokers or ex-smokers, they usually say, "Smart man. I wish I had never started."

Very smart man! I am so jelous!

I went to two sessions of Accupuncture. One in the evening and then the other one the next morning. When I was done with the sessions I never ever craved a cig ever again.......it was unbelievable!!! I would highly recommend this way of quitting. It was so relaxing, too.:D

Most important is that you want to quit for yourself. If you're stopping to try to make someone else happy, it is less likely to work. I quit cold turkey just over 2 years ago after smoking 1 1/2-2 packs a day for over 20 years. Not because somebody kept nagging me about it, not because of the looks non-smokers gave me, not because of the rising costs - I was selfish & did it for me. I miss it terribly but it is more of an addiction to the habit than a physical need. Think about each cigarette that you light up - are you smoking it just because you always smoke when you're on the phone. Are you smoking it because you always smoke when you have a cup of coffee? Try to see if you can stretch out the time in the morning before you light up that 1st smoke. When you think about lighting up, think about why you stopped in the 1st place and keep being selfish. I want to breathe. I don't like the smell on my clothes. I don't like standing outside in the rain/snow/heat.

I quit over a year and a half ago. Trust me, you can do it. Take it one day at a time. It is hard, but soooo worth it. I wouldn't go back to smoking for anything. The patch helps as well as another little thing I did. I had Dum-Dum suckers on hand at all times. Went thru about a dozen a day at first. It keeps your hands and mouth busy and they are so small they disappear pretty quick. Good Luck, give it your best shot my friend!;)

I not a smoker either I just wanted to wish you the best of luck. I have heard how very hard it is to stop.
I grew up in a house full of smokers, mom, step dad, grandma & grandpa. I hated traveling with them because I couldnt breathe at least at home I could slip outside.
I wish you all the best!!

I tried to smoke when I was a teenager because someone said it would kelp me lose weight, but I could never get in the habit and let them burn out. Then as I got older, I could have one drink and be fine, but if I had that second drink, I had to have a cigarette! I might not have another drink or cigarette for 6 or 8 months. Then for health reasons I couldn't drink alcohol and haven't had a cigarette since. (Pretty weird, but thank God I never really started. With all the other health problems I have, I'd probably be dead by now.

My SO smoked for 40 years, then one morning he got up and decided he was going to stop, and just quit. He hasn't smoked in two years.

Good luck to you, delswife. You might try the accupuncture - it's sure worth a shot.y BIL and SIL both tried it and it worked for them.

Wishing you the best of success, delswife. You WILL do it this time. An ex-smoker here, over 30 years. It was tough back then, a 2 pack-a-day Camel smoker, no filters. Stop by here if it gets tough, we got some great support here. Do it for you, do it for those you love. I've seen what it does to people, not nice.

Again, my very best, you can do it!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan

Just wanted to wish you Good Luck. I stopped smoking cold turkey almost 15 years ago. Just decided one day that I wasn't going to do it anymore and let it control me. I don't remember any thing that triggered it, other than I realized how bad it was for me. I was very lucky in that I didn't crave them afterwards and didn't gain weight. I'm also lucky that I live in California, where only 16% of the population smokes and you can't smoke anywhere inside, not even a bar. In my whole office (about 75 people) there are only two that smoke. I'm hoping that since my son doesn't see many people smoking, he won't have the urge to try it when he gets older. It's not "hip" anymore, like when I was a teen. :D

Good luck... you can quit! My mom did it with the help of some sort of prescription. I can thank her though... growing up the smell of cigarette smoke made me nauseous so I never wanted to smoke.

{{hugs}} and good luck! You'll be able to do it this time since you are really motivated. You are not a loser for "failing" before ... you were just not ready :).

I quit a 2 pack a day habit cold turkey 24 years ago when I was 18 years old. I smoked through High School and then quit my first year in college. To this day, it is one the greatest achivements of my life ;).

My DMother and my DH and I all quit a month ago, when my DM got really sick and was put in the hospital and was told she could not smoke again or she would get better for awhile and then she would be sick again.I told her that if she would quit that i would quit and then DH had been having heartburn really bad and went t the DR and was told that he needed to stop or the medicine would not help so he did.It has been a hard month around here my DH has been Satans child the past month but i know it will get better cause it cant get any worse,LOL.The patches really help but Please get the Nicoderm and not the off brand or they will not work nearly as well. Also,we have a bag of Jolly Rancher cinnamon fire candy that helps if you really need something. You can do it but you have to want to first and be dong it for yourself or it will be hard to do.:p .Lots of Prayers are on the way for you.
