Hi All ~ I don't have a passport so I'll be using my driver's licence for customs ID. There's the thing....I don't like like my photo anymore. I gained 100 lbs, cut 18 inches of blond hair and dyed is red. What to do? S

It's a fact that if you don't look like the photo in your licence, then customs has every right to refuse you entry into another country. Well "technically" they do anyways, but this just gives them reason.

Yet another reason why everyone should purchase a passport. :)

if I were you I would go to the license bureau and ask for a new one. Maybe you "lost" your other and need a replacement

It's always safer using a passport! :thumbsup2

Good Luck getting a new photo!

The Ministry doesn't care that you don't like your photo!

Believe me I've tried!

A possibly more important question.... When are you going and how are you getting there? (Your signature suggests March.)

After Jan 23rd, if you are travelling by plane then you will be required to show a passport in order to get into the US.

I think there might be a bit of a difference between just not liking the photo and actually looking almost nothing like the photo anymore though :confused3

In a nother post shes flying from BUF and you only nr=edd passports right now if your leaving Canada by air. By ground its 2009 passports are required.
Sandra I would go to the ministry and see, if you are close to when its time to get it changed anyways you never know, does your health card look more like you do now? Because you could use that too ?

Okay, since you are driving across the border, I agree with many others--try getting a new picture taken. I was once able to successfully replace my photo when it no longer looked like me. (That said, it cost about the same as getting a passport.)

You may also want to remember to bring your birth certificate as back-up.

Good luck!

Ontario's got pictures on your health cards?? Who knew? I was wondering why I sometimes hear people discussing whether you can use a health card as ID.

So where else do you get pictures on your health cards? Not here in low tech Nova Scotia.

There was a window in Ontario in which people were getting photos on their health cards. They were phasing in photos with the intention of requiring new photos every few years (I forget whether it was 3 or 5). However, they ended up deciding that it was too expensive. So, most people have photos (and once you have a photo you will have one forever), but, last I heard, they had discontinued the photo requirement for new cards.

Note: there is also a provincial law making it illegal to show your health card as ID. So, it doesn't really help in the border crossing issue.

Your driver license pis won't be different if you go in and say you lost it or if you tell them that you've changed. They use the same pic as it is stored in the computer for the Ministry of transportation. They may allow you to get a new one a month before expiration... but if it's any longer, you might have to go get a passport for yourself.
We travel using passports as well but are not intending on getting baby a passport until ours expire in August, he'll be using a birth certificate to cross the border in April to take Madigan for a dr. apt @ Children's Hospital and for our Disney trip in May.

A few years ago I had this problem. I lost 60 pounds so I wanted a new photo. I just went to Service NB & said I lost mine. They asked if I wanted to update my photo so of course I did. Cost me $8. I live in New Brunswick though so our rules my be different. I can't see why you can't update your photo where you live. Good Luck

The picture cards are still being issued, DS was born in August and his card has a pic of a trillium but expires in 5 years and eventually when he is older he will need a photo for it.

In Ontario to replace your licence when its time for expiry is about $75. Its not cheap to live in his provience :sad2:

Due to safety issues, they don't put pics of kids onto them until they are much older. It could be 12 years, but I am leaning closer to 14 or even 16 yrs. I think its the same idea that you should never put a child's first name on anything that a stranger could use to identify them.

I just talked to my husband who works for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation Licence Bureau and he said that it costs $10 to get a new picture.

THANKS! Much appreciate the info! S

I think it has something to do with privacy laws in Ontario so businesses (or whoever) can't ask someone to produce their Health Card as a form of ID. But I have seen people using their Health Cards in US airports as IDs.
