I don't like what happened to me at WalMart...

wow, I dont even sign my cards, I always put " See ID" as a security measure. I can always who has looked to try match signatures because the ones who do ask for ID.

I would MUCH rather they were paying attention and checking ID>

I think you should be happy that the cashier was checking to make sure the credit card was yours. :confused3

The wallet was laying out with the ID showing, like several posters have said, he probably thought you did that intentionally. I leave mine like that all the time and they check it, much of the time I am busy with arranging something in the cart or helping my son with something, so they do just pull my wallet over closer so they can see it. I never thought twice about it.

I think it is a GOOD thing when you are asked for ID for a credit card purchase, I don't want it to be easy for someone to fraudulently use my card.

;) Maybe he thought you were cute and wanted to know your name!

Why don't some of you sign your cards? Are you worried about someone copying your signiture?

Oh, and I always thank the clerk for checking!

It is a common practice around here to check Id's - not discrimination.
I prefer that they do check, to be honest.

I've been asked for my driver's license almost everytime I've used my credit card in the US.

That was my exact thought. :goodvibes
It's common practice to have your ID checked, and I am glad they do.

We do that and it does work most of the time. Sadly, not all of the time.

Am I being too sensitive or was I descrimated against???
Any comments...
Just had to get that off my back...
Debbie

I've gotten irritated when they haven't asked to see my ID! I've actually asked them why they aren't checking to make sure it's my card! Try going to Lowe's; not only will they ask for your ID, but they'll also look at the debit/credit card if you swipe it yourself, to get the last four digits off of it.

The man seems to have been doing his job and probably just took the opportunity to see if it matched, because he saw it laying on the counter. I'm sure he'd have asked otherwise.

Credit card fraud is a major crime and it can wreck havoc on your credit, not to mention your life as you try to straighten it out.

Wow.Thank you everybody for responding! I agree it's a good thing he checked my ID.Like I said it's the first time (and I've had a half a dozen credit cards for years..)that I have had someone check my ID against my cc.
I wish I had done what the other posters have and put 'check ID' on the back of my cards but instead right after I called to activate them I just signed them...I'm such a lamb.I do what they say is required to do.
Anyway I realize now that he probably thought I left it there for him to check.
Thanks to everyone for your great feedback.
Debbie

Thank You to those of you who have stated that the card isn't Valid unless signed. you are 100% correct. You are also correct that a store does not have to accept a card that is not signed/or one that states See ID. This is NOT a safty measure, especially in this day and age of Identity theft. It is easy to make a fake id and carry it with you. Please, please make sure that you do sign your cards, and have See ID signed next to your name.

Great post! I was going to post, but saw you already are thinking now what I was thinking. You really listened to people's replies.

Walmart is the only place here that ALWAYS checks my ID.

Exactly right...I always sign all of mine because even our post offices will not take a card that is not signed. I have seen many a heated argument over that one...but the fine print is right there...some version of: "Not valid unless signed"

He should have asked for your ID and not touched your personal property without permission. Usually I like that they ask me for ID except the time we were at MGM and I wanted to pay using a credit card that's in my husband's name. Even though we have the same last name they wouldn't take it. The CM actually said I that for all he knew we could be getting divorced and me trying to run up the card out of spite. Gee, way to be magical there.

Maybe how the CM stated it wasn't appropriate but I understand why they didn't accept your cc. The store I used to work for would not accept cc's unless the names were exactly the same, first and last. It was just their policy to help prevent fraud. I know they have accidentally accepted bad cc's and checks before and got in trouble for it. Disney might just be covering their backs.

To the OP: I am not condoning what the cashier did. That is your personal property and he should have asked to see your ID. But maybe, just maybe, he didn't do it to be rude. I know when I was a cashier and I asked to see ID for either a cc or check, a lot of customers would just hand me their wallet with their ID in the little clear window. The whole wallet, not even a little change purse. Or they would ask me to take the ID out for them (for who-only-knows what reason). I always thought it was weird touching their wallet but I had to do what I had to do.

You wouldn't believe how many cc's I would get a day without any signature or even "See ID" on the back. And then when I would ask to see ID the customer would get rude with me. I guess a lot of people don't care that they are making themselves an easy target for cc theft. I guess I mean just be happy that they even cared.

I'm still not sure what to do with my credit card. The signature is almost completely worn off. (no jokes please). I was going to resign it at one store, but the cashier told me not too, as if someone ever noticed the faint signature under the new one, they would assume it had been signed twice and not accept it. But at other places, the cashier can't make out the old signature and has given me trouble about the card.

Did you ask him for an explanation? or did he just volunteer that?

I suppose if you asked for an explanation, you deserved what you got! :) If he just volunteered that, actually saying "out of spite," that is a rather harsh way of wording it!

I did ask why I couldn't use it considering that my husband gave me the card to use on the trip. My problem isn't so much with the fact that they wouldn't take it as much as the way he phrased his answer. It wasn't so long ago that my grandpa would give me his card and no one ever questioned me. Now I can't even use my own husband's card without someone wondering if I'm trying to screw him over.

My credit card rarely leaves my hand. Almost everywhere I shop has card scanner that the customer uses. So, I scan it myself and put it right back in my wallet. The scanner usually says to hold card for the cashier, but the cashier never checks.

...it could very well be that the cashier interpreted the OP's putting her little change purse on the counter as offering the ID; the cashier might even have been mistakenly miffed that the OP, seemingly (to the cashier) knowing the policy of having to present ID for credit card transactions, presented the ID in a manner that forced the cashier to have to reach over, turn it around, etc. So, it could have been just a misunderstanding. :confused3
I totally agree on this--he was doing his job and may have felt since you put the driver's license down on the counter that you were putting it there for him to check. I would be delighted that he did check because it's all too easy to use someone else's cc these days!
As for him turning it over and looking at the other side I don't understand what is the problem with that :confused3 I say that not to be rude but I don't understand what your driver's license is like---ours has 2 parts--the piece with the photo then the other piece that has signature and our physical description with signature on the other. If that is the case with yours as well, I totally understand why he turned it over.

I would not resign it because of exactly what the clerk brought up. Most card companies I have dealt with will just send you a new card if asked. I would just call them up and get a new one.

Wal-Mart's official policy is to ask for ID on credit card purchases over $100. They are prompted by the register. I've been asked several times, whenever it's over that amount.

I'm guessing you're more upset about the fact that he didn't ask.

I'm still curious why she thought it was discrimination.......
discrimination of what?
