I don't like what happened to me at WalMart...

I was checking out my groceries at walmart and a guy I haven't seen there before was at the register.I used a Gift Card to pay for part of my purchase and then used my credit card for the balance. While I was getting my credit card swiped I had set my little change purse on the counter with my Drivers License facing thru the plastic screen and while I was busy the check-out guy turned it around and looked at it to check against my credit card.
I did not say anything about it but I started getting really annoyed by the time I got to my car.I do not like what happened.I have never been ID'd for a credit card purchase and that is really sticking in my crawl...
Am I being too sensitive or was I descrimated against???
Any comments...
Just had to get that off my back...
Debbie

Too sensitive and Not discriminated against.

BTW.... ALL of my CCs DO NOT have my signature on the back. In its place I wrote "Please Request Photo ID"..... and then if they DO NOT ASK, I ask them why they didn't ask! Helps keep fraud in check.

I've found in the last month I'm asked for ID more than I'm not w/ a credit card purchase. I think it's becoming more popular w/ Identity Theft and all. However, I would of said something about him just picking up your wallet if it wasn't clear that was your intention.

Right before Christmas I had a cashier at Hot Topic ask for my ID-- I pulled my wallet out and was proceeding to take the ID out when she snatched my whole wallet out of my hand saying something about leaving it in there. I was so mad- I grabbed it back and let her know that I do not think this was appropriate behavior.

I don't see where the clerk did anything wrong, but I'm amazed at the number of people that don't sign their credit cards.

Why do you think you were discriminated against anyways?
What would make you think that?

I was hired to work for Wal-mart as a cashier, and went through the training. ( I never started working there, but I was trained)

Wal-mart requires every cashier who takes a cc to look at the sig. on the license to compare it to the CC. So, your cashier was doing his job. All the other times you've used your cc and they did not ask to see your license, they were not doing their job.

I don't understand why it did not make you feel good that someone was making sure it was actually you using your cc. :confused3

This is the first time I have ever been ID'd for a cc purchase.

ID for a credit card purchase is standard operating procedure, esp. since I moved to Texas. They ALWAYS ask for ID.
Shoot, you HAVE TO present your ID for everything, including going to the Doctor, which I thought was weird.

Now I do agree the guy was rude and should have asked you to present your ID. Maybe he was mistaken???
I would give him the benefit of the doubt.

When I was a CM we ALWAYS had to ask to see a Drivers Licence to check against any card - credit or debit. That was standard procedure.

He probably shouldn't have touched the change purse without you seeing, but I would be glad that he wanted to see your ID. I am a teller at a bank, and I'm amazed at how many people get furious that we ask to see their ID. It is for your own protection. You wouldn't want just anyone to walk in with your stolen check an cash it. If we get the ID we have something to go on if the check IS stolen. Same goes with IDs. Just before Christmas, I had a vendor tell me that there is a new CC scam where they are lifting the magnetic strip from cards and putting them on their own. So, he had to enter my last name. So, the names would match on the front of the stolen cards (if they asked to see their ID) but all of your info is on the strip. Make sense? Anyway, I urge everyone to gladly show your ID when using your CC or a check. If they don't ask for it, they aren't worried about who's you are using.

I agree! I use to work at a bank and it would amaze me the times people would get upset if you asked for ID -however these same people would be beyond furious if someone else had their creditcard and tried to use it and no one ID'ed them. We would hear that alot too- "someone stole my credit card - why weren't they ID'ed when they used it" So I am glad to see more and more retailers finally checking ID's. There is nothing wrong with making sure that you are the person that should be using that card.

He should have asked for your ID and not touched your personal property without permission. Usually I like that they ask me for ID except the time we were at MGM and I wanted to pay using a credit card that's in my husband's name. Even though we have the same last name they wouldn't take it. The CM actually said I that for all he knew we could be getting divorced and me trying to run up the card out of spite. Gee, way to be magical there.

I used to do chargebacks for one of the larger Credit Card companies. You have no idea how many "not authorized user" chargebacks we processed for a spouse using the cards. Unfortunately, some of those were people banking on a merchant being careless and not checking the name on the card.

My employer is very strict about it (although some of my employees aren't). If it's not your name (spouse, parent, etc) we will not take the card. 95% of the population is happy that we check. The rest apparently don't care about it until they experience credit card/identity theft and are indignant that we don't know it's okay for them to use the card.

I'm happy anytime I get asked for ID-they're looking out for their best interests AND mine.

i'm always asked for id at walmart lately. Maybe something happened that they were sued and it's really being enforced. There are a lot of stores that do it and they should...it's for your protection. :)

You'd be saying something completley different if your credit card was stolen, and that same cashier had NOT ID'd the person who stole your card, and then used it.

It may be a minor inconvience, but get over it. Most cashier's are trained to ask for a DL. And its for your benefit, not theirs.

Our Walmart checks ID's about once/year and enters them into their computer system. If your purchase is larger, say over $300, they will check an ID. I guess I don't understand the problem.

I refuse to sign the back of my cards also. I write SEE PHOTO ID! Many times, mine doesn't get asked for either. If someone asks for my ID, I always thank them. I also think those little keychain cards are the worst idea ever. If I lose my keys, I've lost my CC too!

Ok, but how about the people who have the same name? My brother is named after my father, and legally dropped the Jr. from his name. My brother could have my dad's cc that is not signed and just says see photo ID. The photo ID confirms it is the same name on the cc.

Identity theft is huge with people finding info on other people with the same name. It happened to another brother of mine. The guy got ahold of my brother's account info and ss, and BINGO...everytime he was asked for ID, he was good to go, he had the same name.

::yes::

Walmart is one of the only stores that actually asks to see my credit card ~ and I shop a lot always using my cc ~ they never have asked to see my ID to confirm who I am, but at least they ask to see the back of the card to verify the signature. No other store does that I go to does that. Although, I do think he should have asked you if he could verify your ID instead of just picking it up on his own ~ that was rude.

I work as a cashier at Babies R Us and we are supposed to ask to verify the signature on all cc purchases, and if the back of the cc says "see ID" I will ask for an ID. I wish more stores would do that, or better yet, I wish cc companies would enable a PIN system like debit cards so that the cc user must enter a PIN in order for the purchases to go through. I think it would help with cc fraud.

I am very rarely asked for my id when using a cc. However, the other day when I had a prescription filled at Walgreens, they asked to see my id. I questioned them if that was something new they were starting as I use that same cc every month when filling that prescription. She said that some of the cc companies require them to check around the holidays as there is so much more cc use during this time of the year.

On another note though, the abuse of credit cards has to have gone up since so many places have the machines where you check yourself out. Mainly, pay at the pump, since you are not even interacting with an employee. I guess at the stores where you swipe your own card, they could still ask to look at the card and your id, but I have never been asked to in that situation.

It's been awhile, but I used to be a retail store manager. We had communications from Visa/ Mastercard that we were not to accept any credit card unless it was signed. 'See ID' did not count. A son who shares his name with his father could have taken the card. The signatures must match. It was a rough Christmas season that year, with a lot of upset customers, but if you read the back of your card, it says on it "Not Valid Unless Signed".

::yes:: What she said. I worked for a retail store that implemented this policy as well. If you don't sign your card, stores don't have to accept it. Plus, it just always struck me as very dangerous to not sign (you'd be amazed how many are just blank, not even a "See ID"). Someone takes it, signs it, and voila, the siggies match. No ID required now.

I'm IDed for my CC purchases probably 95% of the time. I like when they do it and ask them to do if they do not. If more clerks did that there would be less illegal CC purchases. My DD worked at Hecht's and it was store policy to ask everyone for ID when making a CC purchase.

I do sign mine, but also write 'please see ID' next to it.

On one of cards I have Ask for ID on it instead of a signature. You wouldn't believe how many do not even ask for ID in that case and I ask them to look at my drivers license. It seems that everyone asks me for ID when I present my signed CC to them and no on asks when I present the unsigned CC. :confused3
