I don't Like Macy's!

G. FOX! I loved that store growing up in the 80's. I lived about 5 minutes north of the Trumbull mall & on Saturdays my mom & me & sometimes one of my sisters would go there for the Gold tag sale.

I remember buying (OK mom bought) about $100 worth of clothes & I got at least 2 weeks of outfits for school because they were all on sale & gold tagged & mostly Esprit.

I only went to Macy's if Filenes didn't have what I needed (but what was Macy's before it was Macy's???).

I know before it was G.Fox it was Corvettes in the 70's.

I don't know what mall you are shopping in (the OP) but if it is the Trumbull one, my mother, sister & mother's cousin (also a Disney freak) said they are thinking of Target. I love Target but not for that mall.

BTW, I don't live there anymore (sniff, sniff, I miss civilization) & I now live in the lower CT river valley, yippee...not.

I like Macy's. I've never even heard of some ot the stores you guys are mentioning:(Feline's? Foleys'? Hudson? - Ok, I've heard of Hudson Bay Co = same thing?) Macy's has great sales for CARDHOLDERS with newspaper coupons. We get coupons mailed to us almost monthly. Ya can't fault a company for catering to cardholders. That just makes good business sense. I never carry a balance, so don't care if I charge something once in a while. I like the quality at Macys. I think it's a step above Mervyn's and Kohl's.

They probably get some sort of kick back of some type. I don't think they're trying so hard to get their customers to get their card just so they'd shop there more. I don't believe card carrying members actually spend more than non card carrying members do.

I did want to add to my prior post. It's not that I hate Macy's. I just hate that we lost one of our best stores to get one. I'd be thrilled to have Kaufmann's AND Macy's. I'd choose Kaufmann's 1000 times out of 1000 times to Macy's though. That's what has me so bummed.

Down at King of Prussia, I'd be in heaven! They have Macy's, Lord and Taylor's, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom's, Penney's, Neiman Marcus, Strawbridge's, and Sears (which I can take or leave). PURE HEAVEN, not to mention all the other stores.
It's actually a proven fact that a customer shops more at the store where they have a charge account. A customer that has an account at a department store spends about $1,200.00 on average a year. A customer who uses a 3rd party charge in the same store spends about $700.00 a year on average in the same store. I'm not sure if I have the numbers accurate but I know that it has been studied and proven. So yes, from a business stand point, because Macy's is a business, it is in Macy's best interest for customers to have a Macy's card. Just like it would be for Filene's, Marshall Fields, and any other department store around.

Maybe it's me, but when Hecht's was in Tennessee I thought they were HORRID. No merchandise, sales clerks who couldn't figure out HOW to ring the discount etc.

I live in Atlanta and have no problems with Macy's or the way they target customers. It's not dramatically different from the Target push EVERY time I am there to get a Target card for my 10% discount... (which I have always declined)

I do have a Macy's card. If they are having a discount AND I am buying enough to make a difference I use it. If I am buying a $10 sale item I just don't let it bother me that I am not getting the discount. I have also found some great deals at Macy's sales (Hecht's started out with one of anything so what sale stuff was left were the dregs on one would buy!).

Now, it's more or less a high priced "JC Penny's". Merchandise is never where it shoud be. The clerks are not helpful. The quality is not good.

::yes:: i was not thrilled at all when our Fieldswent Macy's BLAHHHH.....and all my mall has other than that is Sears and Berners and JcPenney..blahhhh blahhh blahhhhh....

At least i still have my Ann Taylor and Eddie Bauer....

There was an interview with the Macys folks in the Boston Globe recently. They did confirm in that interview that they are moving away from coupons, and towards in-store savings through sales on merchandise and rewards for their card carrying customers.

Here in Boston, we had a Macys and a Filenes literally across the street from each other. When I had to choose between the two, I usually shopped at Macys because the Filenes had an odd layout--over six floors, and it felt pretty cramped (it's an older store--the site of the original Jordan Marsh).

Since the merger, the staff at the Boston Macys has seemed to get a little more professional--they certainly are dressed better. They do seem to have less casual merchandise in general than I could find at Filenes, but I think that is a space factor.

Truthfully though, I never shop at either very often. Instead, I like to look for bargains at Filenes Basement!

In Oregon and Washington we had Meier and Franks. They were bought out by Macys last spring. All of the stores seem the same now. We finally got a Kohls. I like it pretty well. They have things the other stores dont. Having just a few stores when 3 are almost identical, it fuels our need to goto Nordstroms in Portland. ;)

I just had to say that you sure are at Macy's alot for not "likeing" it :rotfl2:

I agree with you on not wanting another credit card. Our Kohl's always offers an addtional 15% off if you use their card. Makes me mad! I don't want their card.
We have a Macy's also. It originally was Hudsons, then Marshall Field, NOW Macy's. Usually avoid that store because of the price tags.

Same here. I used to have the Hudson card which turned to the Fields card. Last week Macy's called and said they would like me to pay off my fields card and if I did so in 2 equal monthly payments they would gladly send me a Macy's card :lmao: :rotfl2: . Never been in Kohl's but I love our new Target. Susan

If I didn't have years of G. Fox and then Filene's, with the coupons, etc. I probably wouldn't mind Macy's but I feel that I have the same product with no coupons except a discount if I used their card. I use Amex because I accumulate Sky Miles. In this particular situation, I had money on a gift card and I felt as though I was being punished with no discount while they had use of my money.

Same here! I won't shop without a coupon, and I won't use a card in order to get a discount. I miss the coupons that came in the mail and that were in the paper, and feel as though the store just had a 15% to 20% pricwe hike.

Funny you should bring that up. This past friday one of my GD and I went shopping at the local mall.
I rarely go to the mall, too many stores that sell junk for me. I do love the outlet mall though.

Always loved Filene's, loved their sales and coupons. One trip in Macy's this past friday night was enough for me. I was not crazy about the store. Most of the clothing and things were so over priced and no deals. Don't think I'll be returning.

I'll stick with Marshalls, TJ Maxx and the outlet stores. I do not shop in stores that you need their card to get the discount.

I hate Macy's for a different reason. When DS11 was little he was in a wheelchair. I had gone through a long period of depression after he was born and I was finally getting a handle on things. So I took him with me on a shopping trip with the intention of buying a new wardrobe $$$. Admittedly, I didn't look like much and neither did he. What I found at Macy's were snobbish sales people who made it obvious that they didn't like to serve "my kind" :confused3 Not only that, but the racks were so close together I couldn't get DSs wheelchair between them. The sales person invited me to leave him in the aisle while I shopped  I don't think I'll be leaving a 3yo anywhere unsupervised. I took my son and left. I will not give Macy's one dime of my money.

I guess the Macy's in the NY area are very different. We constantly get coupons. Every sunday there is a flyer with a coupon and usually during the week we get another. The Macy's here carry a wide range of clothing from all different price ranges. They also have a wide range of selections. I have encountered some excellent sales too. It's just odd to see the Macy's differ throughout the country.

I've also never heard of half the stores you guys have mentioned that Macy's took over. We have always had Macy's here. But they did take over Sterns when they went out of business, which annoyed me because Sterns used to have great sales.

The transition to Macy's was not too long ago here. I think that they may be trying to encourage people to open up store cards. There are always sale papres witht eh coupon on it, but you must use the card to recieve it. I won't let any store force me to use a CC in order to gain a discount so I am going to have to learn to love a new store, I guess.

I am someone that loves Macy's but only for their brand. Style & Co, these clothes fit me perfect, especially the jeans. We will be moving to SC and there is not Macy's!

Actually, Macy's is in the old Jordan Marsh store.

Filene's had an odd layout because it used to be separate storefronts. At least, that's what we were told during training when I worked there. If you look at the architecture on the outside, you can see very distinctive changes in the four corners of the building indicating where the other stores used to be.

Next time you're at downtown crossing, take a look up at the building. It's easier to see than it is to describe.

Oo, not good! That would do it for me too!

When I was little, (4 or 5) my mother would take me shopping with her and leave me at the child care play ground in the Boston Commons. There was a lot of play ground equipment, arts and crafts and she paid by the hour. I can remember having a number pinned to the back of my clothing so I couldn't take it off and get mixed up with another kid. ;) When she did take me into Filene's, on a couple of occasions, I missed going to the play ground so much that I would wait until she got undressed in the fitting room and run out. I was a brat!!! ;)

I'm kind of on the fence about our new Macy's. I had a Filenes card anyway, so now I have a Macy's card. I was actually able to find clothes I liked (and in black - when it was Filenes, I could NEVER find anything in black!). For once the store is clean and uncluttered.

BUT...it seems that everything is that "superior value" or "great value" or whatever it is that they call it. The stuff that never goes on sale and you cannot use the extra savings. And yes, it's all more expensive. I needed to find "professional" work clothes, as I'm looking for another job (can't go to an interview dressed as a roadie!). $40 for a plain old nothing-special button-down shirt??? And not just in the clothes...the cheapest towels that they had were $17.99 on sale (regular $19.99).

So I don't know how often I'll be shopping there...
