Macy's has recently aquired all of the Filene's which used to be G. Fox in Ct and I would imagine through out other areas of the country as well. On a weekly basis, Filene's would publish 15 to 20% off coupons in the paper or send them via flyer to your home. I rarely went shopping without one and when I did, I could count on a clerk or a shopper to "lend" me theirs. With Macy's now in full swing, the promotional this week and I would assume into the future is; "Use your Macy's card to receive 20% off". I don't have a Macy's card. I don't want one. I use Delta Sky Miles card for all of my purchases where it is accepted. Last night I had to purchase a gift. I used a gift card for a $50 gift with a balance of $124 so even if I had a Macy's card, I would chose to use the money in the gift card. There were no coupons available and the coupons that were sent out to customers were targeted. That's fine. Stores and businesses can determine thier target customers and reward them. However, from my point of view, when my gift card is empty, I will attempt to shop elsewhere. I say attempt, because it seems that Macy's is now pretty prevasive and there may not be a lot of choice. There are lots of shoppers in my area who do not think that the absence of coupons is going to go over well. I hope that is the case. Either provide the coupons or do away with the gimick all together and mark the merchandise down across the board.

Well, that's the thing. They are rewarding the charge customers.

but yeah, I hear it all the time.

I can't even tell you the last time I've been in a Macy's and I have their card. To me the store is very disorganized and everything is all spread out. I'd rather go to Talbot's and Eddie Bauer for clothes and Bed, Bath & Beyond for household stuff.

I like Macy's but I don't like the fact that it has taken over so many other stores.. They took over some stores in California in the 90's and Now Filene's... It's bad enough Jordan Marsh is gone..I used to love them

Our Hechts is now a Macys too. I went in there the other day, I only saw the high end stuff. They have outpriced me as a customer.

Our Famous Barr just became a Macy's. Coupons came out before the actualy name change happened, but now, nothing. I do have a charge, and got a whopping 15% off the other day, but i do think that their prices are much higher to begin with. Everyone around here is very used to the weekly coupons, both mailed out and in the newpaper. They are just setting themsevles up to give our other big department stores more business.

All of our Hudson's are now Macy's, they were Nieman-Marcus for a while before that, which I hated slightly less than Macy's. Hudson's used to have SALES. I mean sales that were worth going into the store for - and clearance, real clearance, not this laughable 25% off prices that are 50% higher than they should be.
I go in there for make-up. I can't afford 70 dollar sweats, or 12 dollar socks, so I shop elsewhere.

Our Fields ia now Macy's...I am a sad girlie. I haven't been in one yet-and I really have no intention of.

I agree with you on not wanting another credit card. Our Kohl's always offers an addtional 15% off if you use their card. Makes me mad! I don't want their card.
We have a Macy's also. It originally was Hudsons, then Marshall Field, NOW Macy's. Usually avoid that store because of the price tags.

Macy's always has flyers in the papers usually with 20% coupons or in the newspaper ad. They also sometimes publish $10 off coupons for the beginnings of sales and such. Just ask to be added to their mailing list- I don't shop at Macy's without my coupons!

Ok, I am probably the minority here, but here goes. I grew up in NY and loved shopping in Macy's with my mother. When I moved to Virginia, I could no longer shop in Macy's, while there are other just as nice stores in VA I would still miss shopping in Macy's at Christmas time. Well, now I can do it again, but with my DDs. We will get to share the same traditions. Yes, I do have a Macy's credit card, I pay it off as soon as I use it. That way, I get to partake of their discounts and I'm not adding any debt.

You could do that, or just don't shop there. But there are some of us who welcome Macy's.

I used to love Hecht's...always something on sale and then additonal off with coupons either received in mail or in the newspaper. I finally went into Macy's last week, hardly ANY sale merchandise and I had a 15% coupon, but it was dependent on using Macy's charge. I feel as the above poster, outpriced and doubtful I will make it a regular shopping stop.

Macys publishes their coupons in the paper.

Kohls is the only store I have a card for. Use it, get good discounts on top of good prices then turn around and pay it off.

When I first moved to the East in the mid 1980's, Macy's was a *nice* store with quality merchandise & helpful staff. The had stuff you couldn't buy any where else. Now, it's more or less a high priced "JC Penny's". Merchandise is never where it shoud be. The clerks are not helpful. The quality is not good.

I, too, miss Filenes. I have discovered a new store, Coldwater Creek. I was astonished that a clerk actually came to the dressing room to see if I needed another size or other help.

In Oregon and Washington we had Meier and Franks. They were bought out by Macys last spring. All of the stores seem the same now. We finally got a Kohls. I like it pretty well. They have things the other stores dont. Having just a few stores when 3 are almost identical, it fuels our need to goto Nordstroms in Portland. ;)

Our Foleys is now a Macy's :guilty: I LOVED Foleys..macys is not so great

Don't give them your money.

Let them know why you won't shop there.

Plenty of other shopping opportunities out there.......we are smothered in Macy's and I haven't step foot into one in years........

I'll go against the grain here and state that we really did not shop department stores until Macy's arrived in the area. Our 7 year old DS is well stocked on clothing for both summer and winter at prices that cannot be beat by a Wal Mart-for much better quality. What's good about Macy's is that if you are looking for a $500.00 pair of jeans, they have them. If you are looking for $2.99 T Shirts off of a clearance rack, they have those too. We do have a credit card which is paid in full monthly. We also have Kohl's. Macy's offers the discounts more often.

We had Hudson's here; which I really loved and then they were bought out by Marshall Fields. I shopped there, but less often. Now that it's Macy's I'll have to see how their sales and coupons run. I like to shop there when buying gifts for special occasions. I usually love the atmosphere around the holidays, even though I don't spend much there.

We'll see how Macy's holds out in our area. It may surprise us.

I like Macy's OK. They seem a cut above our old Foley's but they can be a bit more expensive. Like others have said, they often have coupons in the newspaper.

I'll likely continue to do more shopping at Dillard's though. Luckily, they haven't been taken over YET.
