I Don't Get it

Honestly, I think shared outpouring of grief (or sadness, pick your term and the depth i guess) when someone famous passes is nice--it is one of those ways that humans feel connected. Building bonds and connecting and seeing how much we have in common is a good thing.

It's not about cool points. I just don't get it. I feel like it is those of you "grieving" looking for cool points by filling your Facebook/Twitter feeds etc with RIP "insert current celebrity name"

Geez, that is about as offensive as the OP of this thread.

If the deceased did not mean anythign to you, if you do not feel any particular sadness over their passing, fine, but to assume those who do are just pretending to look cool and to come here to a thread in which many expressed those types of feelings and say that people are doing that is really in bad taste.

How is any more offensive then the PP suggesting that I am trying to be cool by saying I don't care?

You statement on Type 2 diabetes is wrong and misguided. Some people may develop it from over eating but not everyone who has it overeats.. If it is just about the eating then every overweight person would be diabetic. That is not the case. Sadly you might be trying to make a point but I can't see through the mean spirit of your post to even want to understand.

My statement is not wrong nor misguided. I have a family history riddled with Type 2 diabetes so I'm well versed on one the main causes and also well versed on the role genetics play. I'm far from mean spirited as I believe it is others, like TVGuy, who are stating that personal choices are causing early deaths and I was trying to show the irony of that statement which apparently was lost on some.

Note that I didn't at any time state that Type 2 diabetes was from overeating.

We are all imperfect people on this planet. Every single one of us has a crutch of some sort. It's human nature. In the end, death gets us all.

The following was copied and pasted from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, an American government website:

What causes type 2 diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes—the most common form of diabetes—is caused by a combination of factors, including insulin resistance, a condition in which the body’s muscle, fat, and liver cells do not use insulin effectively. Type 2 diabetes develops when the body can no longer produce enough insulin to compensate for the impaired ability to use insulin. Symptoms of type 2 diabetes may develop gradually and can be subtle; some people with type 2 diabetes remain undiagnosed for years.

Type 2 diabetes develops most often in middle-aged and older people who are also overweight or obese. The disease, once rare in youth, is becoming more common in overweight and obese children and adolescents. Scientists think genetic susceptibility and environmental factors are the most likely triggers of type 2 diabetes.

Genetic Susceptibility
Genes play a significant part in susceptibility to type 2 diabetes. Having certain genes or combinations of genes may increase or decrease a person’s risk for developing the disease. The role of genes is suggested by the high rate of type 2 diabetes in families and identical twins and wide variations in diabetes prevalence by ethnicity. Type 2 diabetes occurs more frequently in African Americans, Alaska Natives, American Indians, Hispanics/Latinos, and some Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islander Americans than it does in non-Hispanic whites.

Recent studies have combined genetic data from large numbers of people, accelerating the pace of gene discovery. Though scientists have now identified many gene variants that increase susceptibility to type 2 diabetes, the majority have yet to be discovered. The known genes appear to affect insulin production rather than insulin resistance. Researchers are working to identify additional gene variants and to learn how they interact with one another and with environmental factors to cause diabetes.

Studies have shown that variants of the TCF7L2 gene increase susceptibility to type 2 diabetes. For people who inherit two copies of the variants, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes is about 80 percent higher than for those who do not carry the gene variant.1 However, even in those with the variant, diet and physical activity leading to weight loss help delay diabetes, according to the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), a major clinical trial involving people at high risk.

Genes can also increase the risk of diabetes by increasing a person’s tendency to become overweight or obese. One theory, known as the “thrifty gene” hypothesis, suggests certain genes increase the efficiency of metabolism to extract energy from food and store the energy for later use. This survival trait was advantageous for populations whose food supplies were scarce or unpredictable and could help keep people alive during famine. In modern times, however, when high-calorie foods are plentiful, such a trait can promote obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Obesity and Physical Inactivity
Physical inactivity and obesity are strongly associated with the development of type 2 diabetes. People who are genetically susceptible to type 2 diabetes are more vulnerable when these risk factors are present.

An imbalance between caloric intake and physical activity can lead to obesity, which causes insulin resistance and is common in people with type 2 diabetes. Central obesity, in which a person has excess abdominal fat, is a major risk factor not only for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes but also for heart and blood vessel disease, also called cardiovascular disease (CVD). This excess “belly fat” produces hormones and other substances that can cause harmful, chronic effects in the body such as damage to blood vessels.

The DPP and other studies show that millions of people can lower their risk for type 2 diabetes by making lifestyle changes and losing weight. The DPP proved that people with prediabetes—at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes—could sharply lower their risk by losing weight through regular physical activity and a diet low in fat and calories. In 2009, a follow-up study of DPP participants—the Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study (DPPOS)—showed that the benefits of weight loss lasted for at least 10 years after the original study began.

Since you seem to be in the know about cool points, I find myself in need of official tabulation of mine.

I posted the thread on here about Prince's passing. Casual fan. His death caught me by surprise and took me back to high school and college days. I think it's sad & feel for his family and friends, haven't worn purple, gone into morning or shed a tear. I have no Facebook, Twitter or any other social media means of collecting cool points. I did text back and forth with a couple friends about memories as news spread.

What say you, one who seems to have a handle on motivations and most importantly, cool points? Have I at long last risen into the cool realm, or do I remain perpetually as uncool as ever?

Whatever the tabulation, it should be doubled for this post alone. :)

My point exactly. HIs death was newsworthy, but not worthy of a Special Report IMHO.

Who deserves a special report than?

I find it funny coming from people who get criticized usually in real life for being Disney fans (and our sometimes obsession) would care or critique someone else's fans

And if you dont like it, then hop off social media for a bit, turn the channel etc, it isnt that big a deal.

Someone mentioned Cecil the Lion's death, I didnt get all the hoopla over that and all the news coverage. But I was respectful enough not to post about (well until now lol). I had respect for the individuals who are that passionate about an animal's death and this animal in particular. I didnt make a post saying it was ridiculous, or question someone's morals. I didnt take to FB or Twitter or anywhere else. I simply went on with things and privately to myself express that I didnt quite get it. But I never questioned another's judgement or decision on that choice

What you define as "grieving" is more accurately described as taking a bit of time to respect the life and note the passing.

As I said upthread, many people are able to do this and carry on with their own lives just fine. Lots of people aren't black and white thinkers. They understand the difference between "grieving" and respecting the passing of someone who's art or artistry one found meaningful.

I have no idea what you fill your Facebook/Twitter with but you certainly are entitled to populate them with whatever you'd like.
I don't have either, FWIW.

Well, you hit the name on the head. TV is trying to keep up with Social Media, and maybe we need to reevaluate that since SM is so frequently wrong.

I was saddened by the news. For me, hearing Prince's music took me back to the time when I was a teen. Each song has a memory attached to it--Purple Rain--my first boyfriend. Little Red Corvette--hanging out with friends. Once the musical icons of your generation start dying, it's a harsh reminder of mortality...and your own mortality. Even though I didn't know the person "Prince", his death affected me.

Off topic but speaking of social media being wrong, the whole Rachel Roy, Rachel Ray and Beyoncé thing yesterday. Some of the ridiculous comments posted about Rachel Ray were so funny.

Sorry, back to the insults.

Sorry I am confused...wrong about what?

Prince died, it was reported. People were stunned and shocked, they posted RIP or links to the news. I dont see the big deal. Someone else will die that was not significant in my life, say for example Merle Haggard. I didnt post RIP or any links because I didnt know his music that well but did know he was a country icon. I didnt care when others posted RIP etc because they did care I just scrolled on.

Once again, I will ask who deserves a Special Report?

If it brought eyeballs to your station's broadcast I'm guessing that was the worth those who brought it to air were looking for. Isn't that what television broadcasters seek to do?

Apparently on Saturday night Beyoncé released new music that accuses JayZ of cheating with someone named Becky. I don't get the next part but people think that is someone named Rachel Roy ( I don't get how Becky became Rachel in this nonsense). Some of Beyoncé's massive number of online fans assumed it was Rachel Ray and not Rachel Roy and proceeded to attack Rachel Ray online. Some of their posts are extremely funny.

George Carlin's quote is perfect: "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."

Sorry again to go off topic.

OMG People really thought Rachel Ray and JayZ were having an affair.
