It definately was rude but 40's are middle age.

Also maybe she was hurt that it took to the 5th game to be invited over. It's hard to be the new mom on the ball field just like being the new kid in school.

Heck yes, it was rude. There's no other way that it can be interpreted within reason. If she was upset about not being approached earlier (making an assumption here), why didn't she make any initial moves herself?!? Everyone needs to be responsible for themselves, not expect others to make the first move.

And it makes no difference if whether IN FACT (a point that can be debated, I might add) you or the other women you normally sit with at the games are "middle aged". The woman who said it to you was a major snot!!

Sounds a lot like jealousy or insecurity to me. She must really need to point out just how much "younger" or "better" she is than the rest of you to build herself up in her own mind.

We've got a girl like that in my office. She is 28 and the majority of us are upper 30s, lower 40s. She makes cracks like that all the time, but she doesn't limit it to age.

First she'll say "You older people are boring."

Then it's: "I don't WANT to be married--you married people have no life."

And on and on and on....

I think she's just seriously jealous and is pissed because of her self-imposed exclusion. And come to think of it, she doesn't hang around with any of the younger women in the office either.

So, this woman is probably the same. Just can't get along with other woman period and chose to hit you where she thought it would hurt.

Sorry she was so rude, Jill. BUT...welcome to the 40 something club. Eventually, we all get that slap in the face and think...I'm not middle aged! LOL! To 20 year olds, we are. Give it time...in a few years you will start to notice how YOUNG the 20 year olds look! LOL! And you'll notice the slight changes between your skin and theirs. All I can say is good luck, and it happens to all of us.

I'm not under the impression she wanted to be approached. I thought she was content by herself...speaking as one who likes to sit alone at the games and not with the crowd. If someone asked me to sit with them though, I would politely decline.

1. Being about the middle of the ordinary age of man; between 30 and 50 years old.

2. Being roughly between 45 and 65 years old.


I think that the second definition is better.

Pin Wizard, you may very well be correct that she didn't really want to be approached in the first place. Hard to know here.

Either way, I think that the "middle aged" comment didn't have to be made, even if it is true. Like someone else said, it just sounds like she had her panties all in a twist and was being rude. Or at least, she could have chosen her words MUCH more carefully!

I'm 44 now, and to be honest, I've never really put ANY thought into whether I am "middle aged" until now. But I guess I am. I deal more now with my husband who thinks that at age 44 (like me), he's "old". Now THAT I strongly disagree with and am not afraid to tell him so!

I started a new job and the boss told me I reminded her of someone and she just couldn't put her finger on who it was. Later in the night it came to her.... HER GRANDMOTHER!!!
