Pardon my ignorance on this, but what is the benefit of having A's. How does one then secure an A? I'm also going on the assumption that this is for SWA, but if you could clue me in, that'd be great.

SWA boards by a first-come-first-served basis; no assigned seats. The order is, pre-boarders (those with small children, seniors, hanicapped, etc.), then A's, B's, & C's. Those who check in earliest get the A's & therefore a larger choice of seats. I've had an "A" before & still been in the back third of the plane due to so many pre-boarders. Usually, if you arrive at the airport two hours ahead of time, you can get an A or B. You can also check in online at http://www.southwest.com/ starting at 12:01 AM the day of tour flight.
SWA boards in three letter groups.....A B and C as well as pre boards....
pre boards are a given....they go first.....then those who have A cards go next and so on....
thus if you get A's you can be assured you will probably sit together since SWA has open seating
if the plane is really full.... late C's usually have the left over choices....usually middle seats and no place to put their carry ons since the bins are full
