I could get used to a view like this. Guys, I want a castle.–Oct TR ( I'm BACK!!!)

I love going to Magic Kingdom after dark!!! The low crowds are really amazing & it's just so beautiful!!! Last year we stopped by all the little shops on Main Street after the fireworks while the masses were rushing to the buses! It was one of the best nights of the entire trip!

Your plans for that entire day sound great!!! Glad to see you back on the DIS! :thumbsup2

Love the plan to attend MK EMH! We are planning on doing that as well, and I am so excited.

And I too am bummed at the loss of the haunted carriage rides. It was one of the things I wanted to try out on a future trip.:(

Hi!
Im at work so I only have a second to reply!
Missed you here on the DIS...glad to see your updates!

Thanks! It's so good to BE back!:goodvibes I seriously missed everyone.

I still have to purchase our MNSSHP tickets. Not really sure why I haven't done that yet…

Going to EMH at MK after dinner at Artist's Point sounds like a great plan! :thumbsup2 I've not been to evening EMH at MK… that's on the "Disney Bucket List" for sure!

Honestly, I only purchased them because I figured if I waited until the trip, I'd talk myself out of it.... ha! Are you going the same night, or Tuesday (I think that's when the other party is....)

If you can swing EMH in MK, I highly recommend it. Mike and I were talking at dinner last night and I really think if I could do a "before park opening" breakfast every trip AND an EMH at night... I really wouldn't need to spend any more time in MK!:confused3

This could be due to my aversion to crowds....:rotfl2:

I'm so totally bummed about the carriage ride being discontinued. We were planning on going this trip. We almost always go October and had never done it!

I'm hoping that maybe next year they will bring it back. I didn't even know about it until last year, but we went in September, well before they started doing it.

Thanks! I'm super excited to be back. Now if I can just keep myself from canning on my WFH days, I might have time to actually UPDATE these things.... but, as it is, sour cherries are calling my name!

I'm so going to go broke this summer buying canning jars alone!:lmao:

I keep telling myself it will be worth it come winter.:rolleyes1

You're going to LOVE it, I'm sure!:goodvibes All the rides take on a different feeling, and since it looks like you're going for a romantic honeymood type trip.... well, that's even BETTER!princess:

So, remember how I was SUPER excited that I saved all that money on removing the DDP from our package?

Yeah, I just lost half of that today.:rotfl2:

I've been eying our flights for awhile now, hoping that with gas prices falling the cost of airfare might drop to a more reasonable level.....to the point where I could afford an upgrade on our flight to first class. I wanted to do this for two reasons....1) It's just more relaxing, and they give you ACTUAL food. 2) Two bags per person checked for free. With long trips like this one, we will both have two bags, which, if we were to fly coach, would cost us about 200 bucks each way. I won't be traveling light. I want to be able to bring back some fun souvenirs this time....that adds up.:confused3

So, there I was, clicking through my flight on United when I saw it.

Upgrade to first class.:)

Both flights.:goodvibes

300 dollars per person!!!!

Ok, so NO, that's not a small amount of money, and YES, it did hurt when I pulled my bank card out to pay for it.... but.....

WE'RE FLYING FIRST CLASS TO DISNEY WORLD!!!!:dance3:

:banana::banana::banana:

Of course, my freezer also decided this morning it doesn't like closing so much anymore... so I may have to look into purchasing a new fridge in the future (right now, it's held shut by duck tape... no lie, I'm going to take a picture later to show you..:rotfl2:)

In other news, the summer season is well upon us. This means I've been in the kitchen non-stop freezing, canning, and munching happily on all the berries that are coming into season way earlier than normal.

Just made my first batch of sour cherry jam last night. Will have to make more. That stuff is yummy!

Now, off to type up day 4 of our plans, or as I like to call it... Day AWESOME....:cool2:

Another little score for saving money! (or, perhaps, making up for those airline tickets.....:lmao:)

Thought I'd share the latest on Disney's Photopass+ service, rather the new discount:

http://www.disneyphotopass.com/wdwphotopassplus.aspx

Basically 30 dollars off w/ preorder, and they mail you the voucher. Looks like they're starting to get their act together with this one.

Also - I had previously pre-ordered the regular CD, but I called and they changed that to a 99 dollar credit (I ordered before the price increase) so I could upgrade to PP+ for 70 bucks. Not a bad deal, if you love ride and meal photos. If anyone is in the same situation, the number to call and do this is 407-560-4300.

Just wanted to share, hope this helps!

Jen

I think this is totally worth it! Between the luggage fees, food and just the general improvement of comfort level, totally and completely worth it in my book! Nice job!

And thanks for the info on the photopass. I was considering doing it, as I love ride photos, and the extra 30 bucks off has me really considering it!

Woohoo for first class! Nothing like starting your Disney vacation in style! :thumbsup2

Thinking about upgrading to PP+. I bought the "regular" PP before the price increased… so it's good to know I can upgrade to the PP+, but not sure it'd be worth it for us since we're not doing any character meals.

Great plans! I think that doing away with the dining plan is a good idea, especially since you are getting annual passes. I have been thinking about doing that on our trip next year because it gives us a bit more flexibilty. I won't feel as though I need to make an ADR just to make the dining plan worth it. I will be able to do a CS every once in a while and not feel as though it is a waste.

Great news about the flights Jen! :cloud9: It makes such a difference upgrading - I am really tempted to upgrade to 'premium' on our flights next year for the cruise, and attempt to keep it a secret from DH until we get to the airport.. not sure I'll manage though! :cutie:

Sounds like a good idea just to get at TiW card rather than the Dining Plan - we loved having the card for our last few trips, definitely getting it again this year too - it saved us so much money on food & beverages.... I think the discount we got at Victoria & Albert's alone covered the cost of buying the TiW card!

Hope you have a great weekend,

Emma princess: x

Phew! Caught up!

Good call on the TiW vs. DDP. I wish I was eligible. Especially with both of my boys being Disney adults. I know I could rock the card, sharing entrees, apps as meals, splitting desserts.

So happy you are doing MNSSHP- this is right at the top of my Disney Bucket list. I was born on Halloween (that explains a lot, doesn't it?) so it has always been a very meaningful holiday for me.

Your day 3 plans sound epic! I love the picture of the margaritas- so pretty!

:woohoo: for first class!

And finally, look at you with all the canning going all Pioneer-woman on us!

My DH and I were out looking for new luggage this morning, and all he could talk about was the awesome upgrade. I was worried he was going to be unhappy about the money I spent, but it seems like just the opposite has happened.

It really was the 30 bucks off that decided me on PP+. We typically purchase two ride photos each trip, and I would have loved to have gotten our Ohana pictures, but they were just too expensive! The 70 dollars extra I spent covers that cost perfectly, so I was sold. It also just seems more organized now, what with the mailing of the voucher, etc.

Yeah, that's where it becomes a question. Just a few ride photos doesn't justify the cost, (as you get the digital copies to add to your CD anyway!) but with character meals (which, I....ahem....might have added another one...) it worked out for us.

The ironic thing is that once I got rid of the plan, I added MORE meals. :confused3 I want to be able to try lots of locations, but being locked into an App / Entree / Dessert....well, I eat a lot, but not THAT much.:rotfl2:

I am happy with our choice, however, though it took me making that choice to realize that what I thought was eliminating stress (pre-paying w/ dining plan) was actually adding MORE stress (trying to do the math to get the full dollar value).

Hi Emma! I hope things are going well for you also!

I can't imagine a cross Atlantic flight in regular coach class....granted, I'm scared to fly that long anyway, so probably First Class or Premium would make me feel trapped as well. I seriously must get over this fear or I'm never going to make it to Europe.:sad2:

Very good point on V&A, though I just realized that won't cover our meal there this time....:headache: Ah well, just gives me an excuse to go there again in the regular dining room for our winter trip. (Having APs is going to be a problem, I keep trying to think of reasons to go down there now!)

If you do upgrade, I hope you are able to keep the secret! We all know I stink at this myself.:lmao:

The appetizers as meals was a main reason I went with this. I find half the time I want two appetizers, but none of the main entrees impress me. (I'm looking at you, Rose and Crown!!!)

Your birthday is only a good mark of a "spirited" personality.... "but then there was a star danced, and under that was I born..." (I know, Shakespeare nerd....)

Yeah, I was brought to task recently that all I put on my FB page is canning and garden pictures. You should see how tiny our condo is, for me to be doing this, but it is a fun learning experience. I had decided to "put up" as much fresh food as possible this year (from my "garden" as well as a few local farms) so as not to buy anything out of season. The next day I went to McDonalds....ah well, no one is perfect.

It's been fun, though I have no idea where I'm going to put all this stuff!!!

Isn't that picture awesome? Mike took that on our February trip. It was way too crowded in the bar so we got a drink to go and sat outside enjoying the sun. A great memory from our trip.:goodvibes

Good Plans!

The TiW card I feel is the way to go when planning a lot of eating. Especially if you plan to have alcohol!

I'm in the same boat for not saving at V&A's. A little disappointing as that would be a good savings. But Chef's Table... can't beat that!!

Maybe I will also see you around Epcot on the 15th!! Our plans so far align!

Happy Monday, everyone!:goodvibes

For those of you who followed my last PTR, you would be aware that I had little “projects” I was working on leading up to our trip. (See: Piggy Fun Fund and Disney Coach Pin Purse of Madness™ ). I also had a project (Impossible Disney) that I worked on for our February trip, though I still need to get that all organized so I can post it in that TR.

So I needed a project for THIS trip…. And I came up with a few, that I’d like to share (and hopefully solicit your help!):

Project #1: Pressed Pennies

I used to collect these when I was a kid, and even still have a little box with some very cool (Seattle Space Needle) and very strange (Philadelphia Science Museum, which was a human heart…) from my youth. Since there are tons in Disney, I thought I’d nip a little change from the Fun Fund Pig and press a few while we’re there! For anyone who has done this, isn’t there a specific year you are supposed to gather in terms of the pennies? I can’t seem to find that anywhere…..:confused3

Project # 2: Impossible Disney part Deux

I don’t really want to ruin the surprise from the previous trip but I’ll just give you a little tease of what’s to come:

Project #3: Photo Scavenger Hunt

Yesterday was pretty difficult for me; I was missing my dad something fierce.:sad1: So, I pulled down a few photo albums and started flipping through, lots of which were Disney pictures from various trips (1980s, mostly). There were so many things that were familiar to me, and others that are just a memory in the parks of what “used to be”:

f1894d57.jpg

Of course, while going through these pictures, I wanted to see “is that still there”. I thought it might be a fun project to pick some of our favorite pictures from both of our childhoods, blow them up a bit, and then take them with us and see if we can either get the same shot, or take a “before and after” kind of photograph.

This is where I’ll need the help of DISers who are much smarter about me, because a lot of these I simply can’t figure out!!!

So, who’s in?:flower3:

Would you believe... I can help you with the Pressed Penny stuff?

Here is my file of info.

Note- this is info I have just copied from posts on the DIS. So when it says "I" it doesn't really mean me.

Disney Pressed Pennies

Beginning in 1982 the metal used for pennies included zinc. Zinc is not copper colored, and when the pennies are pressed, you can sometimes get grayish streaks or spots in the surface of the penny. Pre-1982 pennies come out entirely copper colored when they're pressed.

The ketchup technique is a popular with collectors. Simply rub a little ketchup onto the penny. For best results, use an old toothbrush to scrub the surface lightly to work the ketchup into all the tight areas. Rinse the penny and you will notice that it is now dull and pink. Now pour some baking soda into a small dish and add some water to make a thick paste. Rub that all over the penny with your fingers to bring back the shine.

A mixture of vinegar and a little salt to clean pennies is a time-tested method. It works on the same principle as using ketchup (vinegar and ketchup are both acidic), but there is less rubbing involved. Mix up some vinegar and a small amount of salt. Stir it around to dissolve the salt and then dump in your dirty pennies. Mix it up a bit and let it sit for several minutes. You will be able to see the cleaning process in action. Don't let them sit too long! Scrub lightly with a toothbrush to get the especially gritty areas clean. Shine them up with the baking soda paste above.

A mixture of lemon juice and a little salt works well also, followed of course by the baking soda treatment. Use ACTUAL juiced lemons, not lemonade from the freezer section or ReaLemon in that plastic lemon. Try each of these methods to see which one you like best.

After multiple trips to the Home Depot, we have discovered that the best way to prevent tarnish from returning to a cleaned coin is a good coat of Varathane Diamond Wood Finish (clear).

This is the same product that we use on the elongated pennies we have sealed into the cover of the PennyCollectorTM books during their manufacture.

Exposure to the air is what causes a penny to tarnish over time. The Varathane seals the penny to prevent the air from reaching its surface.

LOVE the photo Scavenger Hunt idea!! Now you have me thinking I should pull out some old photos and do the same for our next trip!

Dee - thanks for all the tips! I never knew about the pre-1982 pennies!
I always thought the newer the better :(

I like the Photo Scavenger Hunt idea!

My youngest DD has begun an obsession with pressed pennies. I'll have to start looking for pre-'82 pennies and start hoarding them in anticipation of our next family trip!

Dee, it does not surprise me at all, I swear you should write a book with all the awesome knowledge you have!! :thumbsup2

Thank you for this, I think I'm going to sit down after work (today has been brutal so far and it's only 10!!!) with a glass of wine and sort through the Fun Fund Pig to find appropriate pennies!

It has been a lot of fun going through the pictures and pulling out ones we'd like to use. I am getting all sorts of ideas now.... :stir:

Ditto! While digging through old photos last night I also found these!!!

I'm starting to get super excited for the trip now.... probably because the heat and humidity out here is just like Orlando (99 degrees expected tomorrow... ouch!)

I LOVE the idea of the Scavenger Hunt!!! :thumbsup2

Ironically, I was just going through my 1987 Disney pictures! I should post an update on my PTR (since I haven't recently posted anything trip related anyway!) and include all of my old photos!

I try to take a photo of Luke in the same exact places at each park each trip -- so we can see how much he's grown between trips! Eventually one day, I'll put them all into a scrapbook! I never thought of taking photos of myself in the same places as my 1987 pics -- but what a wonderful idea!!!! :goodvibes

I'm sorry to hear about your gallbladder! I know you posted that update a long time ago, but I never commented on that post. I had mine out in 2006 and if you want any specific info, you can feel free to Facebook message me or PM me here! I don't want to bore everyone (or gross anyone out!) about details!!! LOL! I'm sure you've already heard stories! The pain before was the worst & I was so happy to see it go, but things aren't fun now either! :sad2:

Loved seeing all of your canning pictures! I may need some tips from you soon! :thumbsup2
