I Can't Believe I Ran the Whole Thing: A 2016 Dopey Challenge Trip Report

If you look above where the Mickey-gloved dude is standing, encouraging all the runners, you might think that is a road. And you would be mistaken, my friend. It's a canal that connects the waterbodies surrounding Magic Kingdom. When I ran the Princess Half in February 2015, there was actually a boat passing by, which couldn't have illustrated the point more perfectly. And the dude yelled, "You're running under water!" Very cool. This was probably one of the first points I remember being a real choke point for Princess Half, but wasn't too bad for this one. We went down the steep incline and then back up and not long after that, Space Mountain came into view. Just like that, we were very nearly in the Magic Kingdom. Which is where I had my one very unpleasant encounter of the whole race weekend.

I have to tell you....I love this! So much, I shared it with my husband! I said, "babe, did you know this was water?!" His response, "yes, it's called an aqueduct!" I said, "how did you know????" His response, "I'm a civil engineer!" Lol! Oops! I forgot :)

Happy belated birthday to you! Mine was Jan 5th. Glad to hear you loved the Wine & Dine....I couldn't imagine getting up at 3 am! I'm a night owl :) I go to bed at 1 at times!!!

Thanks! If you're up at 1am, you'll be just fine for Wine & Dine!

Early AM Crystal Palace ADRs. :lovestruc

I really enjoy that restaurant and we are big Pooh fans in our house, so the character interaction is one we all love. I really like their buffet, but you are right that it's pretty pricey for what you get. We haven't ever tried BOG for breakfast, but might be worth a try one of these days. Your collage with all the Pooh characters is very cute. You look great sporting that Dopey medal.

I thought that Crystal Palace was great! Loved going in the park before open. I just wouldn't go to CP again with just adults in my party. It seemed like the "friends of" the 100-Acre Wood gang were rushing with us to get to the kids at the next table, and the restaurant was nowhere near full. We had a camera malfunction that postponed one photo op maybe 45 seconds and the CM handler was getting a bit snippy. I'm glad we did it, but I'm excited to see how BOG does for breakfast, too. And maybe after that, we'll just stick to the Nutella/fruit waffles at Sleepy Hollow! :) nomnomnom

Haha! Too funny. :)

Day 6, January 11 - Magic Moments

After Crystal Palace, BRF, our hubbies and I headed towards the castle to attempt our medal/castle photos. Unfortunately for us, the sun had risen high enough up in the sky that it was hitting us smack dab in the eyes. Insert comical series of photographs where we try desperately not to squint/blink/grimace as we stare directly into the sun while our husbands fiddle with the cameras. Needless to say, there were no successful photos taken. So we parted ways since BRF and her husband were heading back home this day, and DH and I set about to ride some rides as we waited for our FP+ times. We had a meeting with Mickey at Town Hall (this was so I could get a marathon medal photo op with him), a ride on the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and Festival of Fantasy parade.

But in the meantime, we had some time to kill. The last time we'd been to MK in September, Pirates of the Caribbean was down for refurbishment, so we made a beeline towards the attraction and had a 15-minute wait. Which was okay because it gave our stomachs some time to digest all the food we'd crammed into them. Pirates is one of those rides we get on almost every MK visit because it's nice to just sit in a boat and relax, and when it's hot outside to get out of the heat, humidity, and sun. Plus, it's always fun to chant, "We wants the redhead! We wants the redhead!"

After that, we just meandered about MK, checking out Memento Mori (cool stuff there!), finding much amusement in everyone stopping in the middle of Liberty Square to look at a family of ducks, wandering around near the railroad line, and then looking for Pascal and friends of Pascal in the Rapunzel rest stop area. To date, we've only found seven of the wily little chameleons, so we hope to find the rumored other three at some point.

393a.JPG
So quacking adorable.

395a.JPG
Nice shot of the Walter E. Disney, if I do say so myself.

427a.JPG
Look at that wily little chameleon.

Soon enough, it was time to head to Town Square to visit with Mickey. We'd never done this before and DH was hesitant to be a part of it, since it was a medal photo op, but that was fine. We went through the FP+ line pretty quickly and were soon escorted into a back room with a very short queue where you waited for your audience with Mr. Mouse. Just ahead of us was a severely disabled man in a wheelchair with his mother. He was celebrating his 39th birthday and his mom made sure to let Mickey know that he was always the first or last stop on their Disney trips. Mickey said, "Oh, that means so much to me! Thank you for visiting me!" and it sounded so sincere. The CMs and Mickey took their time with this guest and really went out of their way to make him feel special. It was a truly magical moment that I wish all the cynical people in the world could have seen.

Unfortunately, it made me tear up right before my photo op! So I quickly wiped my eyes and smiled and soon enough it was my turn. Mickey marveled at my medal. And then he asked if I'd seen the big mansion across the way. He said that he'd been there and seen a ghost! He then asked if I'd seen one, too, and made the hitchhiking ghost stance. I said yes, and he jumped back, and he asked if I thought that one had followed me here. I said no and then he giggled and said we should pretend to be hitchhiking ghosts. And so that's what we did. Cute interaction.

396a.JPG
I thought this sign was funny while we were waiting in line!

397a.JPG
Mickey admiring my marathon medal.

399a.JPG
Terrible, absolutely terrible, photo of me, but it was fun!

Then DH and I headed back towards the castle. I'd decided we'd try another medal/castle shot, but it was somewhat crowded and people would walk right between us (and we were only maybe 10' apart) as he tried to photograph me. The sun was still shining brightly into my eyes, and so I gave up on a photo without sunglasses and decided to just go find a PhotoPass photographer. This is one perk that I am really enjoying with the new AP structure, we get PhotoPass photos included with our AP and they tend to show up pretty quickly on our MDE app. This came in handy in December when we took "Sithmas" photos with Darth Vader and Chewie, it really takes the stress of handing off your phone/camera to a CM and hoping that they take a good one. The PhotoPass photographers usually take better photos. So long story short, we found a photographer on Main Street, U.S.A. and I set about the task of getting a Facebook profile pic-worthy photo.

Unfortunately, the photographer thought it might be a good idea to make me, after finishing up 48.6 miles of running, to do lunges on Main Street. But I sucked it up and just went for it. Because why not? And then he asked me to do a lunging jump with my arms stretched out because sometimes great photos are captured that way. And you know what? It really was.

423j.jpg
Posed photo. You can't see it, but I'm doing a lunge here. Ow.

425a.JPG
Too hilarious!

By this time, it was time for our Seven Dwarfs Mine Train FP+, so we went, it was fun, and I even snapped a photo of Dopey and his bling!

428a.JPG
Dopey loves him some bling.

And also got a nice shot of the dancing scene in the cottage.

431a.JPG

Cute! But I don't think I'd ever wait more than 20 minutes for this ride. We then started making our way towards the exit. It was nearing 2 o'clock, I was tired, and we had one more special event up our sleeves for that night, so we wanted to go back to the room and rest for a bit before our evening. Unfortunately, this meant that yet again we were missing out on the Festival of Fantasy parade. This is one of the downfalls of being an AP holder - you think you have so much time to do everything that sometimes things keep getting pushed aside. There will come a day when they announce a new parade and we'll say, "d'oh! We never saw the old one!" but life will go on.

But before we left MK, I had one more mission: the Starbucks You Are Here mug. I have the mugs from all the other parks, so I needed to complete my collection. Which I then did. Joy! And it was back to CBR to rest a bit and maybe catch a bite to eat mid-afternoon or so before we had to head to DHS for the evening's festivities: Dessert Party during Symphony in the Stars!!

Next Up: A short while ago in a place quite near

Crystal Palace sounds delicious! I really like the way they decorate the restaurant- too bad the interaction is a little rushed. I guess that's almost to be expected with character dining. Glad you got your castle picture (after a couple mishaps!) I think I'm purchasing an AP for my next trip and one of the 'pros' for doing so is the included photopass!

Love the castle/medal pictures. Just great! The Mickey interaction sounds like fun and I often choke up watching Mickey interact with other people (kids especially). I just loving seeing their happy little faces. I would have probably been a basket case watching that man you describe. We always go see Mickey after our marathon runs and with our medals. It's the best.

I didn't know about the hidden Pascals! I need to look for them next time.

Yeah, I didn't expect long interactions, but the characters were definitely in a rush with us! I wasn't sure whether I'd like or use PP, but it's nice to have some of the pressure off for photos if we need! Plus the ride photos are always humorous. :)

Thank you! I guess the moral of the photo story was if at first you don't succeed... :) And yeah, watching the man's interaction was so heartwarming. No one in line even said anything about waiting a little longer and everyone sang happy birthday to him!

Finding Pascal is a lot of fun. Some are really obvious and others are really well done in the sense that you really have to be looking for him!!

I agree! Never worth purchasing alone (IMO) but so fun to have when they're already included in the deal! I get a kick out of the ride videos too- loving watching other rider's faces in the ToT one :rotfl2:

Day 6, January 11 - A short while ago in a place quite near...

Hello all! I haven't forgotten about this trip report, I've just been traveling a lot for work this week and I am terrible about posting from my phone! And yesterday, DH and I daytripped it to Disney because we had BOG dinner reservations (first time for dinner!) from months ago. So we took the opportunity to do a few things in three of the four parks as well as stopping by Trader Sam's, and I am pleased to announce that this baby is now mine, all mine:

IMG_2236.JPG

Woo hoo! #lifegoals

We also arrived at MK about 30 minutes before our ADR (after stowing the Nautilus in our car, parked in a prime TTC spot!), just enough time to kill but not go on any rides. So we decided to go and try to find the remaining three hidden Pascals, and guess what? DH found the first of the three and after that, it was like it was all the secrets of the universe were unlocked and we found the other two in quick succession. I call that a productive day at Disney: Nautilus and Pascal!

But back to the TR since that's why you all are actually here reading this! :)

We returned to CBR mid-afternoon intending to relax and maybe grab a bite later on since we wouldn't be eating again until about 11 hours after our breakfast at a dessert party. Ultimately, the grabbing a bite thing never happened because oddly enough we weren't hungry. What? I'd just completed the Dopey Challenge and I wasn't hungry? So very weird, but true. Crystal Palace breakfast apparently has fantastic staying power. And around 5pm we started getting ready to head out again to catch a bus to DHS for our Star Wars dessert party!

I may have mentioned here once or a hundred times that I am a huge Star Wars nerd, our wedding anniversary is in early June, so the last few years, we've taken our anniversary trip to Disney to coincide with Star Wars Weekends. Two years ago (2014), a new fireworks show, Symphony in the Stars, was introduced; it is fireworks set to the music of Star Wars and it is fantastic! So when Disney announced that it was going to become a nightly event, starting just before Marathon Weekend, AND that they'd be offering a dessert party I was all over that. What better reward post-marathon than a semi-private event themed to all things Star Wars?

I was excited, DH was excited, we even dressed for the occasion: DH in his X-wing fighter tee and me in the Her Universe lightsaber logo tee...along with multiple warmer layers over the top! Originally, we'd planned to dress to the much-warmer weather forecast from the previous week. Still, despite the much colder conditions, we were stoked for this party! We arrived to DHS fairly early and were able to check in much earlier than the 7pm start time, but we would not be able to go in until 6:45. So we meandered around the park for a bit and headed back over to Min & Bill's (check-in and party entrance were just across the way from there) to wait until 6:45. Soon people were lining up and the magic hour had arrived and we all filed in. I'd read some tips on this very board (Star Wars thread) to grab a table down by the front and to the left in order to be close to both the food/drinks and have an almost completely unobstructed view of the fireworks.

We grabbed a table and then set about to collecting our treats. There were four alcoholic drinks themed to the evening, including one with coffee, but because the evening was quite chilly, the bartender also suggested that if we wanted to Irish up some hot chocolate, to get a cup at the other end of the party and leave a bit of room at the top and he'd do just that. Nice guy and a tip I was glad to have at the end! And he was tipped in the end! However, "dessert party" was a bit of a misnomer because in addition to the expected mini-cupcakes and other sweet treats, there was also finger food including cheese, biscuits ("quarter rations" if you've seen The Force Awakens), and other items more on the savory side of the spectrum.

I'll let the photos do the talking:
439a.JPG
View from our table (up near the front and to the left as recommended) towards the right side and to the back!

440a.JPG
View of the dance party facing forward before the fireworks started. Fun! Though I ended up doing the Cupid Shuffle for approximately the 4,729th time that weekend. ;)

442a.JPG
Table of desserts, including a blue milk flan-like dessert, rice crispie treats with decorations (which turned out to be my favorite, they're classic), mini cupcakes of the Darth Vader variety (chocolate/peanut butter) and BB-8 (lemon cake with buttercream frosting), Darth Maul eclairs, and the chocolate dipped things on the right that I never tried. The bar is in the background.

447a.JPG
The "savories" table. Biscuit, red pepper hummus-like dip, pesto chips, C-3PO crackers, light saber skewers (cheese/relish or fruit).

449a.JPG
Non-alcoholic punch (two kinds) for the kids and there was some sort of hash-type dish under the heat lamp that I didn't try. Also, if you look between the two tables, there is a cooler. And inside that cooler were Mickey Bars!

441a.JPG
Quarter ration biscuit with red pepper dip.

444a.JPG
Vader mini-cupcake, rice crispie treat, blue milk flan-like thing (it had a blue raspberry flavor to it), and Darth Maul eclair (horrible, very artificial-tasting). The drink in back was bourbon-based. I don't care for bourbon (though I love whiskey/Scotch), so I then switched to the green apple vodka-based drink. The cold never bothered us anyway!

448a.JPG
Because we hadn't eaten since breakfast, I think I had 4 or 5 of the mini-skewers of cheese/relish. The C-3PO cracker was tasteless and bland.

450a.JPG
It was 53 degrees outside and I still had a Mickey Bar! You know why? You know why? ...I'm almost ashamed to say this on a Disney forum, but it was my very first Mickey Bar EVER! Like I said, I'm not much of a desserts person. Which seems strange that I'd pony up for a dessert party, then, huh? Ah, the magic of Disney and Star Wars.

By this time, it was nearing 8pm and the start of the fireworks, so I went to grab a hot chocolate as my bartender friend had suggested, and he Irished that bad boy right up. DH did the same and then we stood at our table, picking at our leftovers, waiting for the hot chocolate to cool a bit, and waiting for the fireworks show to start.

Day 6, January 11 - Light 'Em Up!

452a.JPG

As I may have mentioned here (or maybe on another thread, I can't remember!), I used to work for a theme park in the Orlando area years and years ago. As a result of that span of my employment, fireworks were rendered ineffectual for me; I just don't get excited about them. July 4? Nice patriotic display, guys, but yawn. New Year's Eve? Popping noises to fall asleep to. But this? Well-timed, well-choreographed fireworks set to John Williams music right over your head?

As Phil (from Hercules) would say: Two words, fan-freaking-tastic!

During our last anniversary trip for Star Wars Weekends, we actually went to the fireworks twice. We'd only intended to go the first time and then watch Wishes from the California Grill (we'd had an early dinner there, so we had viewing privileges), but after a disappointing experience at CG (food and snooty staff) we decided to go back to Symphony of the Stars because we'd loved it so much the previous night. Fast forward to Marathon Weekend and we were really looking forward to it, especially what additions due to the release of The Force Awakens in December. By this time, we'd seen it three times in the theater and I listen to the soundtrack at work sometimes. Some of the old school music was in my playlist for Star Wars Half last January and also Princess Half last February; in fact, it was The Throne Room theme that played while I ran down Main Street U.S.A. during PHM, only accentuating the goosebumps up and down my arms.

I don't know why I'm working so hard to convince you that I'm a nerd! :smooth:

At any rate, here are some photos, I only took a smattering so I could enjoy the show!

464a.JPG 469a.JPG 471a.JPG
I love how it looked like stars here.

476a.JPG

Also? I know a lot of people really loved the Apprentice's Hat, but I have to say that the fireworks were much easier to watch without that obstruction. It was a great show, very overwhelming in parts, and over in minutes.

We had leftover desserts and were told we could just take them with us, so we did (breakfast the following day FTW!) and then we followed the crowd out the party entrance and collected our Chewbacca steins. Oh, yes they did. Part of the dessert party package were Chewbacca steins for all party-goers. At this point we were still nursing our Irish hot chocolates and so we wandered around a bit and out the park to the buses. What a great evening! Very appropriate end celebration to an awesome weekend.

The fireworks and dessert look great! Seems like a wonderful night and from the look of your pictures, you had a great viewing location.

Fireworks over Hollywood Studios always look so stunning! I've never read much into the dessert parties so it was neat to hear your review. Sounds like fun!

Congrats on the Nautilus and the Pascals! I think I'm still short 2 Pascals ... gotta keep looking!

Those Star Wars deserts look fantastic! You got some great fireworks pictures - and I totally agree with you, it's an amazing show!

This is inspiring! I have been trying to become a runner for the past 2 years, but I can't get my body on board! Does anyone have any tips on getting my endurance up when running? I work out a lot and am in pretty good shape at 30 years old, and I can walk for days, but it doesn't take long after I start a jog that my knees start to hurt, one of my feet goes numb, and I get a cramp in my side. Wah wah wah, I know. But I can't figure out how to either get these pains to no longer occur, or get my brain to ignore them :/

You runners are rock stars!!

Holy cow, I can't believe how long I was gone! I caught one of those nasty flu bugs and was down and out for a while and I'm still feeling exhausted and tired from it all. Next year, I'm definitely getting the flu shot. Crikey.

It was a wonderful night and great way to celebrate an accomplishment (or not celebrate an accomplishment :)).

Thanks, it was a lot of fun! I'm not much of a desserts person, so I was surprised at how much of the spread I actually enjoyed. It really helped having non-sweets out.

Thanks! We were so pleased to find our remaining three, and it seemed like once DH found the first of the three, we found the other two in quick succession. I will tell you that there is one completely separate from the others, i.e. across a pathway.

And thanks about the photos! I only took a few because I wanted to enjoy the show, so it was nice that they actually turned out. It is a fantastic show!!

Aw, thank you! Not really a rock star, just someone who put her mind to accomplish something, put in the training time, and just did it. Sorry to hear that running causes you pain. Have you tried run/walk intervals?

Day 7, January 12 - Last Dance

Sorry for my absence, y'all, but this last day wasn't terribly interesting anyway. We got up somewhat late, just because we could, at which point I realized that the cold that had been threatening me since the day of the 10K finally manifested. Boo. But I was determined to enjoy our last day at Disney. We had FPs for DAK and so we headed over there intending to ride Everest, go on a safari, and maybe check out The Lion King in its new location. We also had ADR for Yak & Yeti, which we were both pretty excited about since it was a new experience and we both love Asian food (Thai, Chinese, Indian, Japanese...it's all good).

We also thought that after our early lunch, we could head out over to Disney Springs, check out Jock Lindsey's in the daytime and maybe catch a showing of Star Wars (it would be our third viewing) at AMC.

However, when we arrived at DAK, we discovered that Everest was down. So we quickly readjusted our plans and headed over to Kilimanjaro to go on safari. The standby line was only 15 minutes, so we figured we'd just do that and not worry about our slightly later FP. The safari is one of my favorite things to do at DAK, and I'm really glad that they mostly abandoned the elephant poaching storyline and now just let us enjoy watching the animals. DH and I also did the Wild Africa Trek (behind-the-scenes tour) a few years ago and had a blast, we learned a lot about how the animals are cared for and even some interesting trivia like all the ostriches are female, but that the dominant one has developed male-like qualities.

It was chilly on the morning of our visit and so that's always fun to see how differently some of the animals behave - some of them get quite invigorated when the temperature drops a bit. And there were a couple "frisky" ungulates along the way. Hee hee, get some, y'all! ;)

We soon finished up the safari (I didn't take any photos, sorry) and then did the walking tour. The baby gorilla was out and about playing and had quite the audience for a while. I did take quite a few photos of the little one, but for some reason, I can't find them now even though I took roughly 100 photos of the little guy! So cute.

And then we just killed some time waiting for our lunch ADR. I mentioned to DH that I wasn't feeling great and that maybe after lunch we could just go home. I could tell he was a bit disappointed, but he also was very supportive, knowing that I was getting sick and that pushing it would only make things worse and me very cranky! So we headed a bit early to our ADR at Yak & Yeti. We checked in and then set about to waiting in the lobby for a few minutes.

DH looking grouchy because I was taking his photo in the lobby.

We were soon collected by our hostess, who took us up to the second floor - she did ask if we needed an elevator, but we said the stairs were fine - and then were seated at a window overlooking the bridge to Asia. So we were able to people-watch for the duration of our meal!

Our waitress soon arrived, set down beverage napkins and took our beverage orders. I stuck with green tea, given my burgeoning cold symptoms, but DH had an adult beverage. While we were waiting for our drinks, I sneezed, and so grabbed one of the napkins to use. When our waitress came back, she mentioned that she must not have given me a napkin, but then didn't replace it. So apparently Yak & Yeti has a napkin ration system in place. I just thought it was weird! I also ordered some wonton soup (see again: cold symptoms), as did DH and it was very good.

Then we ordered our main course, and since DH ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala (my initial first choice), I ordered the Malaysian Seafood Curry. I love curries when they are a slow, warm burn and this was exactly that! Perfection, actually. Lots of shrimp, scallops, clams, fish, and lots of broth with a mound of jasmine rice in the center.

520a.JPG
Look at that yumminess!! Malaysian Seafood Curry. I may or may not have gotten a bit of drool on my computer screen just now.

Overall, other than the weird beverage napkin thing, we had a fantastic meal at Yak & Yeti (even though they no longer take the Tables in Wonderland discount) and I wouldn't mind going back there again because there were a few other meal options that sounded really delicious.

After our meal, I was just zapped and we headed out to the parking lot and drove home. A rather truncated ending to a wonderful race weekend, but I was glad to get home, put on some comfy pants and relax in my recliner!

The WDW Marathon Weekend and the Dopey Challenge were just amazing experiences that I'll never forget! Even if I never run Dopey or a marathon again. I hope that you enjoyed reading about my experiences, thanks to all for reading and commenting - I have a blog that never gets comments (it has a readership), so it was nice to get some positive feedback along the way. Thanks everyone!! :)

Sorry to hear about your flu! Rockstar or not you have definitely inspired me!!

Yak and Yeti :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 Not only is the food delicious but the view from your table/the ambiance in general is great. I love that place! I went there after the half last year and the waitress offered to let us use the elevators as well :rotfl:

What a great trip/accomplishment! Thanks for sharing your memories with us!

The food at Yak & Yeti looks yummy! And the restaurant looks really nice ... I don't think I've ever been there, so it was nice to see pictures of the inside!

Thanks for sharing your trip with us - I enjoyed reading about your experience.

Congratulations, Dopey!

I haven't ever tried Yak and Yeti, but your pictures certainly make it look appealing.

Final congrats on you Dopey finish and thanks for a very enjoyable trip report!

I really enjoyed your trip report! Congratulations on finishing the marathon-- it looks like an amazing experience. My long term fitness goal is to do a RunDisney event. Like... very long term. Maybe in three years.
