I Can't Believe I Ran the Whole Thing: A 2016 Dopey Challenge Trip Report

More than half way there! Woo! I think I saw in another race report that they weren't letting runners get down on the ground at the Grave Digger stop- perhaps it was too slow with everyone trying to crawl their way back up?! Haha! We laid down (and road Everest) at Goofy last year (clearly we threw all your running inhibitions out the window) and had a great time. Not as terrible to get back up as we expected lol!

I'm so jealous of your race EE experience! I really wanted to do it, but since BRF isn't a coaster person and my aforementioned fears of tweaking my back or something, I let it pass by. Interesting that they weren't letting runners get down on the ground at the grave digger stop, but probably for the best!

The animals at AK are one of my favorite parts and I'm so bummed I didn't do any pictures with them. It and a train picture were my only 2 wants this time around, but I at least got a train picture in the half.

Yeah, I didn't mind Wide World at all this time, it actually went fast for me. They had more characters out there this year too which was nice to see.

Glad you got an RV picture, I didn't get any so it's fun to see.

I know when I saw the sweeping and end of race when I left Wide World it kind of scared me, but then I was like wait I've got a buffer of time here as they still have those 3 miles. I passed Everest at 9:10 according to my picture, so probably like a couple or so miles behind you.

I wanted to save Dove's for later too, but yeah would have been a melty mess. I ate the chocolate last year surprisingly.

I am ALL about the animals (too long of a history to get into, but I've had numerous animal-centric jobs and have had many non-traditional pets) and was a bit disappointed we didn't stop, but I also read in a 2015 race report that someone pet a goat or a pig and then had that musky smell on their hands the rest of the race! But it sounds like we both have reasons to do another WDW marathon (shhhh, peanut gallery, I mean it! :))

WWOS went fast for me, too! Maybe because my ToT experience had been so awful (and in the dark!) and I was prepared for it mentally. Those road sweepers totally freaked me out until my sense and reason kicked in. But there was definitely a visceral reaction to seeing them. Especially since one went up and over the curb while sweeping, making a horrible noise.

Day 5, January 10 - 1.23 Miles to Beer!

Last I wrote, we had just exited DHS and I was getting somewhat excited just because whenever we've stayed on property at an Epcot-area resort, this portion of the race was part of my "regular" Disney running route! Of course, during a regular run, there aren't hundreds of other runners, but what can you do? During Wine & Dine in 2013, I remember this portion of the course getting very congested and with a lot of walkers, to the point where it was pointless and fruitless to try and run around them. So to prepare BRF, I mentioned that we may end up walking more than we'd planned. Luckily, I was wrong!

We ran out of DHS, past people going through security, out past a lot of the bus stops where it seemed a lot of people were confused to see a throng of runners coming towards them! Then we banked left and down the sidewalk, heading towards Boardwalk along the lagoon. Once we got closer to Boardwalk, it seemed as if #alltheguests were outside cheering us on. And then we saw a sign listing distances to various things in the race, including "1.23 miles to beer! (Germany)" Too funny! Especially since it had been BRF's and my evil plot to send our husbands to Germany to collect a grapefruit beer and be waiting for us. Muah ha ha ha ha ha!

Unfortunately, I do not have any photographs of this stretch of the course, mostly because we were getting anxious to a) just finish, and b) get our beer! But we ran alongside Boardwalk then exited out towards the left to Swan/Dolphin and around to Yacht Club, then Beach Club, with many supporters and spectators along the way handing out candy, pretzels, orange slices, and even pickles! I love dill pickles and apparently the juices are great for recovery because of all the salt, to the extent that I've run half marathons that had pickle juice stops alongside water, but at this point in the game it just didn't sound good. As much as I love pickles.

And then it was up the hill towards International Gate into Epcot and all I could think of was how good that grapefruit beer was going to taste! But first, I ran into an old friend from Princess Half: the fairy godmother Ivana. Think of her as a pink-gowned PG-rated Kathy Griffin, and she is hilarious. At PHM, she had pre-race advice: "when posing for photos, crook your arms, girls! A flat arm is a fat arm!" And she was also on course in Epcot for PHM. During the marathon when people asked who she was, she replied, "I'm Ivana. Ivana Cramp." Too funny! And then we went up the hill towards France, which is where Mile 25 lives! We were soooo close, you guys. We got to America and then decided we'd walk once through there because we weren't sure where our husbands would be in Germany, and it would be a tragedy to get that far and completely bypass them! As we passed the funnel cake stand, a little girl pointed at me and shouted, "Alice!" so I looked back and waved. She looked at me and smiled, which made my day.

As we came down a hill, I spotted them. They were just standing there. I raised my arms in a "where's the beer?" fashion, to which my husband quickly stepped back and picked up a glass from a ledge behind them! This was around mile 25.5 so we were ready for a little libation.

326a.JPG
Best beer ever!

BRF and I drank maybe 1/4 of our beers - originally we'd told our husbands to just buy one beer and get an extra glass for us to split, but in true Man Fashion (TM) they totally didn't listen to those instructions and just bought us each a full beer. Which they then regretted because we didn't finish the whole thing and what were they supposed to do then? Poor guys. I'm sure they thought of something. :drinking1

Then it was on to the finish! We passed by Scrooge McDuck and Genie, repeats of the previous day. Apparently at this point, I was aggressively running, because there's a MarathonFoto of me passing some poor girl who looks confused because she's being passed. :hyper: Then it was on past Spaceship Earth towards the gospel choir (Hallelujah!) and then on our way out. I snapped a quick photo of the finish line, hoping that my finisher's photo isn't me snapping a photo like it was for ToT! We high-foured Donald on our way to the finish (should've stopped for a selfie), raised our arms in victory, and then we were done! I'd just finished my first marathon! As part of a 4-day challenge totaling 48.6 miles! Woohoo!

332a.JPG 334a.JPG
Donald is up on the left!

We were given our medals with much excitement (I think the volunteers were as excited as we were!), actually grabbed the wet Dr. Cool towel this time, made our way past the Powerade/water and to the Goofy/Dopey tent where our results were verified and we received both the Goofy and Dopey medals. So much bling!

So pretty!

So much awesome bling!
(P.S. I just now purchased my Dopey package from MarathonFoto and am just waiting for the download code, so these are totally legit despite the watermark!)

Then the food box/banana were collected and we walked towards the reunion area. BRF had mentioned that she wanted a 10-minute massage afterwards and after a bunch of back-and-forth in my head, I also decided to do it just to stretch out and get some relief in my quads. On the way there, we noticed medics outside the massage tent who had mylars. Score! I was already getting goosebumps, I'm sure partially from the excitement but also due to getting chilled, so when I walked over, a medic pretty much read my mind and gently wrapped me up in the mylar. So nice and wonderful! Then we went into the massage tent, it was pretty quick and easy, but resulted in another mylar; there was an embarrassment of mylar riches after the marathon! We then piled into our resort bus, with much groaning and such, having texted our husbands to meet us at the hotel room.

So excited: I am now in the one percent for I am a marathoner!

Next Up: Snakes! Why'd It Have to Be Snakes?

Yay! Congratulations Marathoner! and your first as part of Dopey, that took guts! Looks like you had a great experience. Yep, we both need to return and make those animal pictures a priority! They are so cute and with the bibs too, it's to die for!
I have plenty of marathonfotos of me holding the camera, oops, luckily my finishes were all there without it for the most part.

Did you think the massage was worth it? Did help your legs out? I have never had a massage.

Woohoo - congratulations! Great report; you really made the most of it! I always suffer through Epcot at the end; I'm hoping next year to be able to enjoy it. Maybe that beer would help! And massage tent - always a wonderful idea!

Really enjoying your report. I'm seriously in awe of you super-runners that finish Dopey!

Amazing achievement!

Thank you so much!

Thank you, and likewise congratulations! You totally earned it with that rough marathon day. It was definitely a great experience, but in a way was also a bit anti-climactic. I have so many do-over photos that I want to take time for another race.

As for the massage, I really don't know! They ask you what areas you'd like them to focus on, if you have any pain or problem areas. I was surprised that I had ZERO pain or problem areas after the Dopey (what?), but I asked him to focus on stretching out my quads which were a little stiff, and then I had a little bit left on my 10 minutes and asked him to knead out my calves, too. I'm not going to lie, some of the massage/stretching hurt like a mother, but I have to say that I had very little stiff/soreness afterwards. Which surprised me greatly!

Thank you so much! Yeah, I truly think that knowing I had a grapefruit beer (they are so refreshing on a normal hot day in Epcot) waiting for me was enough motivation to enjoy it all. The massage tent was my first time, but I think it helped?

Really enjoying your report. I'm seriously in awe of you super-runners that finish Dopey!

Thank you so much! But I'm really just a normal runner who did 4 days of races in a row. :)

What an awesome report. You have totally convinced me to take the plunge and do the WDW full next year!!! Love it!! Can't wait to read the last bit!!!

Day 5, January 10 - Snakes! Why'd It Have to Be Snakes?

But wait! There's more! Actually two more days in this trip, the longest stay we've ever had on property ever. The second "ever" is to convince you in my sincerity. :)

As I mentioned in a previous post, the ending of Dopey was somewhat anti-climactic. I'm not sure why. It's not like I expected a parade with 76 trombones or anything, but it all ended with a little pomp and circumstance and then that was it. It was probably because we headed back to our resort pretty much right after our massage. But since we were latecomers, I think staying for the after party may have been a bit much. All I wanted was a) a shower, b) the Publix sub DH had brought for me, and c) water and/or a big old drink!

When we got back to our resort, we realized our husbands had beat us back there! Well done, gentlemen. So we all walked back to the room to have a celebratory drink (there was sparkling wine) and for BRF and I to eat our subs. We joked around: You've just finished the Dopey Challenge and you're already at Walt Disney World. What are you going to do next?

A Publix sub. For those who are unfamiliar with Publix, it's a chain of grocery stores in the southeast and they are fantastic. Their subs are a thing of beauty. Just ask anyone who lives in the southeast about Publix subs, I'm sure you will get a unanimous response. And probably some drooling. Most likely some drooling. ;)

At this point, we were just waiting for BRF's new room to be ready so we could briefly go our separate ways. Long story short, BRF and her DH got their room, and we got ready to go out that evening. We had decided on Disney Springs simply because it was easy enough to walk around and just grab dinner wherever rather than having to worry about ADRs in the parks or even having to make a group decision within the parks. Before we went out, I'd mentioned the new Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar, which is an ode to all things Indiana Jones, some of my very favorite movies. Jock Lindsey was Indy's pilot in Raiders of the Lost Ark as he's escaping the temple in South America at the beginning of the movie. The lounge has all manner of knick-knacks presumably collected on Jock's many adventures with Indy.

It's almost a shame that I was so tired (I was still going since 2:30am and by now it was nearing 7pm) because it is a really cool venue. Instead of a menu, there is a pilot's log, detailing Jock's experiences with the various menu items. There are supposed to be souvenir glasses for a few of the signature drinks, but it turned out that that is not so much the case.

We sat in a fuselage!

The menu cover.

We ended up ordering drinks and some appetizers. Surprisingly, even though I'd only eaten half of my half sub from Publix, I wasn't very hungry. This was odd because after PHM I felt like I could eat an entire gingerbread house (you know, a life-sized one). DH ordered a beer and I ordered the Anything Goes signature drink. Had it come in a souvenir glass, it was supposed to have a replica of Willie Scott (the American singer!) in her Club Obi-Wan red sequined dress on the stem. Alas, as I mentioned, there were no souvenir glasses or mention of such in the menu, unlike Trader Sam's. But the drink was delicious. DH and I also ordered a couple of appetizers: the pretzels with hot mustard sauce and beer cheese dip, as well as the Squid! Why'd It Have to Be Squid? (calamari). The pretzels were quite good and perfectly carbtastic, but the calamari was only just meh. Some of them were quite tender and tasty and others were like they'd been left too long under a heat lamp. So pretty inconsistent within the same dish. Also, and this is only my opinion, I think the ratio of squid to baby octopus was too low (= too many baby octopus, I have a hard time eating them knowing just how smart they are).

Anything Goes!

352a.JPG

Squid! Why'd It Have to Be Squid?

Tasty pretzels and dip. The appetizer plates were also tin, giving it that rustic feel.

Overall, I think this place was a lot of fun. DH and I already decided we should go back again sometime when I'm not exhausted. Because at this point in time, I was losing steam fast and we decided to go back to the room. BRF was still peppy for some reason and wanted to shop around Disney Springs, so we parted ways, making plans to meet in the morning for breakfast at Crystal Palace in MK!

It took a while for a bus to arrive to Disney Springs and then to get back to the resort, but finally we made it back to the room where I got into my fleece pajamas (a cold front had come through central Florida) and I think I fell asleep before my head even hit the pillow. A cliche, to be sure, but absolutely true in this instance.

Next Up: Breakfast and Pooh, and Tigger, Too!

Thank you! And you should absolutely do the full! It was a great race. I never had the inclination to do a marathon ever, but I have to say that it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be, especially as a slower runner. BRF and I had a great time and the time passed relatively quickly. A lot of people say this, but it's true: if I can do it, most anyone can. The trick is to respect the distance during training and then the race is like a victory lap! :)

I finally got a chance to sit down and read your report.

I am totally with you on the early wakeups. It's like ... what? why? Must go back to sleep! Four days in a row ... I don't know how you Dopey people do it.

I love all of your costumes, they're amazing. Especially the Kevin outfit - it's perfect!!
The 5K Mickey Bar guy was staying at my hotel. We saw him loading that contraption on the bus in the morning and it was like "what??"

That 10K weather was craziness. I really thought it would stop raining at some point in time ... apparently not. Oh well.

The ballroom is my favorite room at BOG. Because the snow. Seriously ... I've eaten there twice, and I can't imagine eating in one of the other rooms (we go for dinner, so we don't get to choose our own seats, they seat us ... but we've been lucky).

Congrats on finishing Dopey! Sounds like you had a pretty great time ... and I hope you enjoyed celebrating!

Just finished catching up on your report, congrats on completing the Dopey! My boyfriend ran the 10km (and was actually in the same corral as you!), and has now set his sights on the full marathon in 2018. So that means I get to plan another trip to Disney! (We live in western Canada, so it's a little bit expensive to get to Florida).

Great costumes by the way!

Congrats on finishing! Hangar Bar looks good- I do love pretzels so I'll probably have to try it one day!

Congratulations!! It sounds like you guys did great on your marathon!!!

AK is my second favorite part of the course (right after that run down Main Street). We did stop and spend some time with the animals last year. We had a lot of fun and I have a photo of us with a vulture that had a bib. We had so much fun there. I also really want to do Everest at some point, but my husband is not a fan of that roller coaster and I think asking him to do it would be too much.

I really hated WWOS the first two years I ran the marathon, but last year for some reason it didn't bother me much. Maybe familiarity has breed less contempt? I hear you on seeing them start to clean up behind you though. It's a little scary to see it even though rationally you know you are fine. I'm always so jealous when running down Osceola and into WWOS seeing all those people who are miles ahead of me though. :)

The Hangar Bar looks really cool and fun. Yet another place to add to my list of must-try.

Congrats again on finishing Dopey. You rocked it!! Love those medals.

I think I just ran my first half marathon reading your TR! I love it! I love your style of writing and your humor. I was actually there marathon weekend celebrating my cough cough 35th! I was so inspired by the spirit that I've decided to train for my first half marathon! The food and wine! I'm very nervous, but I'm committed and so excited! Thanks for getting me more pumped!!! Cheers!!!

Congrats on your level of crazy!! No no, I mean a good crazy. Most I've run is a half, so mad respect to you.

Really enjoyed the report. Characters on course are one of my favorite parts of the races so I'm glad you included so many.

Truly, the early mornings would be a bigger deterrent to me ever doubt dopey than the actual race distances. I don't know how you did it, I'm definately a night person.

So it sounds like your doing another marathon? Did I miss it? Is it dopey again?

Thank you for stopping by! I'm also enjoying your TR and can't wait to read your perspective on the 5K and 10K races! Yeah, those four days of early wakeup calls were brutal. BUT everyone I knew who'd done Dopey before (and my running coach relayed the same from other runners) said that that was the worst part. You train for the mileage, not those odd early wake ups! Totally agree about the 10K. I was so sure that it would stop eventually, grrrrr.

Thank you so much! Aw, hi to your boyfriend from the same corral. :) Honestly, I had never considered a marathon, I was always, "I'm NEVER running a marathon." but then Dopey happened. These races really are addictive. Have fun planning your 2018 trip! I'm headed to DL for Tink Half weekend, so I know what you mean about the expense going east-west or west-east. Beautiful country, by the way, western Canada was one of my favorite childhood trips.

Congrats on finishing! Hangar Bar looks good- I do love pretzels so I'll probably have to try it one day!

Thank you! The pretzels were really good! As was the atmosphere if you like Indiana Jones and themed lounges.

Congratulations!! It sounds like you guys did great on your marathon!!!

Thank you so much for the congrats, for reading, and all the encouraging comments!! Those street sweepers did totally give me a mini-anxiety attack, but then reason took over, I took a deep breath, and moved on. Definitely rough seeing all those people hitting mile 20 when you're only at 17, but I think the running YMCA really helped to distract me. Squirrel!

Thank you! And thank you for mentioning my humor; I know it can be quite dry at times, so I really appreciate it when people appreciate it! :) And if it makes you feel better, I had celebrated a much-older-than-35th birthday the week before marathon weekend! Belated birthday wishes to you and best of luck in your half training. Wine & Dine was my first half marathon and I loved everything about it except for the start time because I'm an old and am usually in bed by 10pm. Hee hee!

Congrats on your level of crazy!! No no, I mean a good crazy. Most I've run is a half, so mad respect to you.

Thank you and I'm so glad you enjoyed the trip report; I've read a few of yours (specifically the 2015 SWW one which I really enjoyed, it really helped with my first trip to Harry Potter) and have seen you on the Star Wars thread. :) I think I will be going back to "only" half marathons for a while, maybe I'll do the WDW marathon again someday, but at the moment I'm rather enjoying NOT running 20 miles on the weekend! I have the Star Wars half upcoming and then Tink for rD, with a few others scattered throughout the year. 2016 is going to be about improving my half marathon time because training for Dopey made me feel like my training was all over the place. Thanks for reading!

Day 6, January 11 - Breakfast and Pooh, and Tigger, Too!

I'm not sure what time I woke up the day after the marathon, but I do know that it was much, MUCH earlier than my 6am alarm. I mistakenly thought that I could "sleep in" on my first non-race day at Disney. Har de har har har!! I laid there just enjoying the fact that I didn't have to get up, at least not any time soon, and there was much satisfaction and rejoicing in that thought. Yay. But soon, the time came where if I didn't get out of bed, we'd miss our 8:40 ADRs at Crystal Palace!

We met BRF and her husband at the bus stop around 7:30 in order to have adequate time to get to MK, and luckily a bus arrived about 20 minutes later. Upon arrival, we went through security and then admissions, where a rather, and I hate to say it, unkind CM yelled at everyone who had pre-open ADRs that they had to go back out and meet another CM at a rope queue, but then yet another CM showed up and escorted us up to the newstand on the left hand side after entering. Oy. Yet another classic example of Disney miscommunication. But we soon met up with the CM who took my name, scanned my MagicBand and success! We went in amidst all the people waiting for rope drop. MK was almost eerie with how not crowded it was, and our original plan was to go and take our medal/castle photos before our breakfast ADR, but by this time it was 8:35, so we just headed to Crystal Palace.

357a.JPG
Cool, but eerie!

359a.JPG

We checked in at the front desk outside the restaurant, I gave them my cell phone number because they text you when they're ready for you. And we waited. I feel like I should mention that it was a cold morning, in the 40s, but thankfully also sunny, because there was a huge temperature difference between sun and shade. Soon we were called inside to our table, which was a window-view, so yay! We had a great view of the castle, the entrance to Adventureland (my favorite of all the -lands), and the stream out front.

361a.JPG 363a.JPG

There was also really nice 100 acre wood theming inside; Crystal Palace is character dining featuring Pooh and company (BRF was stoked!).

364a.JPG

We all opted for coffee and orange juice, which I was so happy to see because I was still feeling like that cold that had been threatening the night of the 10K was still lingering. And then we were set loose upon the buffet! I made a beeline to the Mickey mini-waffles, and also remember having some smoked salmon, strawberries, a cheesy grated potato casserole, and an egg dish with peppers and onions. It was all very good, but unfortunately I don't have any photos because we were really hungry and also BRF's husband had given me a hard time about all the photos I'd taken at Hangar Bar the night before. Normally, it wouldn't have bothered me, but I was operating on little sleep and a lot of expended energy and so I didn't go out of my way to take photos. Plus, of all the Disney breakfast buffets, I have to say that the absolute best is the Sunday brunch at the Vero Beach resort. There is seafood and sushi among all the omelet stations and Mickey mini-waffles. And your brunch includes a mimosa, champagne, or bloody Mary. So there is that. :)

Anyway, while you eat breakfast, the 100 acre wood characters (Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, and Tigger) make their way around the dining room for photos. While I love character interactions, the mealtime ones always seem so rushed and lower-quality by comparison. But we enjoyed it nonetheless.

IMG_2051.JPG

I'm glad we tried Crystal Palace once and it's definitely a perk to be in MK before open, but with the $30 per person price tag, I'm not sure we'd do it again. Which is why I made day-after-race breakfast ADR for Be Our Guest for Star Wars Dark Side. I'll be curious to see how that experience stacks up.

Next Up: Magic Moments

Happy belated birthday to you! Mine was Jan 5th. Glad to hear you loved the Wine & Dine....I couldn't imagine getting up at 3 am! I'm a night owl :) I go to bed at 1 at times!!!

Early AM Crystal Palace ADRs. :lovestruc

I really enjoy that restaurant and we are big Pooh fans in our house, so the character interaction is one we all love. I really like their buffet, but you are right that it's pretty pricey for what you get. We haven't ever tried BOG for breakfast, but might be worth a try one of these days. Your collage with all the Pooh characters is very cute. You look great sporting that Dopey medal.
