I am so tired of people who say all coupons are for junk!

Good! I'm painting, and this is my buzz over to during break conversation. :) you'll note that it is getting and shorter in between. I am crazy tired, lol.

Eta, I see your point. I am just old and have decided that it what others think that matters most of the time.

I've spent today writing a eulogy for a lovely lady and preparing photos into a video for her funeral. And I just took some of my stress out on a wonderful walk/jog (for those of you with smart phones I'm in love with the couch to 10k ap,). And now I'm making a terrible unhealthy dinner of homemade home fries, waffles, fruit salad, bacon. ;) not a single hearty grain frosted flake in sight.

This thread has also been my break as I work. A nice little reprieve from the high emotions going on around me here. Usually I avoid such threads but this week it was just what I needed.

I am so so very sorry. I'd bring you a nice casserole with either healthy green and free range chicken or homemade ooey gooey Mac and cheese and oreos if I could. Comfort comes from where you can get it. Btdt.

Take care. Lol, I've never fine up to 10k, but I love the 5k app.

Hmmm, I choose the free range chicken and ooey gooey Mac & cheese. :)

Back to the coupon thing, I always feel lucky as I live in a college town in a farm area so I have diverse choices. From our oriental market, to lots of local farms, to a large organics & health area in our local kroger, to every college kid junk imaginable. I get a local & big city paper and sometimes get 5 coupon booklets in a week, plus my mom gives me hers. I feel people's pain when I travel. Some areas have no choices (no cilantro, no fresh pineapples! :scared1:) and some have outrageous prices on basics like a gallon of milk for $5!

But then again in October we visited southern Cali and I was soooo jealous of their Goodwills. Do you know how nice I could dress if I had Goodwills like that around here? My dh said it'd pay for itself to fly me out there once a year and let me buy our family clothing. :thumbsup2. Plus the family we were visiting had strawberries, avocados, and tomatoes in their backyard all ripe at the same time. Seriously? Jealous!!

So I guess every place has it's ups & downs.

Lunch meats are full of sodium and by-product, Tyson products are out for me because of additives and because I try to buy cruelty-free and organic meats, same with eggs.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but I just find this description funny. Wasn't the animal killed to provide the meat we are purchasing and consuming?? That seems like an oxymoron to me.

Omgosh, not only goodwills but a dozen other thrift store chains! I so wanted to bring home several pieces of furniture. Advocados, oranges, limes, lemons...and the flea market had fresh raisins and dates for a couple bucks a pound.

I'm in a fairly rural area. Kroger is our best shot, no oriental market (but we roadtrip to one every few months) and no big city paper. Just some coupons in the wednesday mail. Luckily we freeze and we have a really nice seasonal market where I know and trust the farmers. In July I can get a big box of tomatoes for $6. Frozen, sauced, canned, they are a taste of heaven.

My chicken boy's chickens live A happy little bug hunting life. Cruelty for chickens means thousands in pens, never seeing sunlight. Cb kills his chickens quickly, effectively and as painlessly as possible. Same goes for the family that raises our cow a our pig.

Of course if you are a vegan who uses no animal products you probably wont get the difference. Most people, and all animals raised for food would get it.

I just have to toss this out there (dons flame suit)... What is wrong with people? Why spend all this energy and time beating each other up over junk/not junk? Its like the mommy wars all over again. "I'm better because I work. "No, I'm better because I stay home." Same thing, except this thread is, "I'm better because I never touch a store bought item and only eat organic," "No, I'm better because I can save money and get stuff for free."

WHO CARES? So people find a way to save money. So they eat organic. So they feed their family in a way that you don't/can't/won't. So what if your region has "good" coupons or not. Why does it matter? Why can't people just be happy for others. "Hey, you found a way to save $2.00? Good for you." Without all the subtext and judging that goes, "Hey, good for you, but too bad your kids are going to grow up nutritionally deficient." Is any of what these other people do directly affecting your life or your eating habits? Nope. So it does not matter what other people do or don't do.

The thing is, coupons and their use are a matter of personal preference. What works for one may not work for another. What works in one area may not work in another. That doesn't mean that anyone is better or worse than you (or that even if you believe it to be so, you have to comment on it). Coupons are out there for those that want to use them. End of story. You don't find them useful, don't use them. If you do, that's fine too.

Why can't everyone just play nice and offer helpful suggestions instead of beating each other up? We're all just trying to save money in whatever ways make sense for us and our own personal situations. There doesn't have to be a "winner" in every discussion. There's no right or wrong here, except what's right or wrong for each individual. All ways of saving money (heck, even living in general) are subjective. What's great for me may stink for you. It's not my business to judge or even comment on it.

Why can't we simply say, "Hey, I'm happy that you're saving so much money. Great!." Or say, "Hey, it's great that you eat so healthfully. Good for you." Try being happy for others. As long as they are happy with their choices, that's all that really matters. Try supporting someone before you rip them to shreds. I can just about guarantee you'll be happier, more relaxed, and more empathetic toward the ways others choose to/have to live their lives.

Off soapbox now...

I could not have said it better myself.

THe point is that there are no coupons for GOOD HEALTHY foods:

apples
bananas
fish
grapes
carrots
lettuce
broccoli
cauliflower
asparagus
green beans

FRESH foods not canned/boxed/processed foods.

Get it now? :confused3

Um, that's not true! I HAVE gotten coupons for (just to name some things off of your list): apples, carrots, lettuce, green beans AND bananas!

In my city the coupons are for processed foods or baby products. Sometimes for shampoo I don't use or mens razor.

We never get coupons for meat or butter or produce. And the store fliers around here don't have coupons in them either.

I just use my shoppers card and try to buy store brands.

If you buy Land o'Lakes butter and your store takes printed coupons, Land o'Lakes has a butter and a margarine coupon on their website right now. I think you will have to sign up but not positive.

I usually buy store brand myself but I do see Land o'Lakes on sale every so often.

And a coupon for spices here ~ http://coupons.redplum.com/offers/default.aspx?Id=LogicalMediaCD5358b&DefaultZipCode= Again, good if your store accepts printed coupons.

In today's Red Plum Sunday coupon insert, there is a coupon for .75 off one package purdue chicken. It says that Perdue Chicken is now USDA Process verified: All vegetarian diet; no animal by-products; raised cage free; no hormones or steroids added.

For anyone in the Philly area, Acme has the McCormick spices on sale 1/2 off and some of them are $1/bottle. With the double coupon, the spices are free!

Also in the Philly area, Shoprite has LOL butter on sale for $1.99 per lb.with your member card. Use the coupon and it's only $1 per lb.after doubling!

You could buy coupons from a clipping service. You can choose what you want from their supply. You can also check manufacturers' websites for printable coupons or to have their quarterly mailing sent to you. The mailings almost always have coupons in them.

Our stores don't take internet coupons. And none that I know of double coupons. So why should I pay for coupons? That negates some of the savings.

That's a shame that your stores don't take internet coupons. I know of a few around me that have very strict internet coupon rules but they all take them. A few around me do not double but most have caved into the pressure brought on by customers leaving them in favor of the stores that do.

As to why you should pay for coupons, I can't answer that other than to point out that if you don't want to spend 5 cents for a one dollar coupon for something that you use, there's nothing that I can say that will convince you. Couponing isn't for everyone and there's nothing wrong with saying that it doesn't work for you.

Well there is proof that it is regional, I have been through mine 5 times as well as my kids and DH. There is no purdue chicken coupon in our Red plum.

I'm not sure what papers are around you, but usually the bigger city papers have better coupons than the smaller papers. My Chicago Tribune had the Perdue chicken coupon but the Lake county paper didn't.
